Setting the Time
- Plug in the Krups "ProAroma Time". Ensure the coffee maker is turned off (the red light should not be illuminated).
- The LCD display will be flashing, indicating it's time to set the digital clock.
- Press the "time" button (n). Press the "auto" button (q) to advance to the proper hour. Press the "on/off" button (p) to advance to set the precise minutes. The AM or PM indicator will be illuminated. If you pass the desired time, hold the "auto" button (q) until the correct time is reached.
- To lock in the time, press the "time" button (n) again. The time will automatically set after 4 seconds. Flashing dots in the LCD display confirm the time is set.
Preparing Coffee
Before making your first pot, operate the coffee maker once or twice with water only (no coffee or filter) to remove any dust.
- Ensure the water container is empty. Remove any literature.
- The glass carafe lid must be properly positioned during brewing. Snap the rectangular piece onto the handle to lock it in place.
- Make sure the swing away filter holder (c) is properly closed during brewing. You will feel resistance as you push it firmly until it "clicks" into place.
- Caution: If the swivel filter is not completely closed, the "Stop'n Serve" trigger may not function properly, potentially causing hot water or coffee to overflow.
- The "Stop'n Serve" mechanism is active as long as the glass carafe is inserted correctly on the warming plate and the swivel filter is properly closed.
Filling the Water Chamber
Open the hinged lid. Pour the desired quantity of water, using the water level indicator to guide you.
The amount of brewed coffee will be slightly less than the water added due to absorption by ground coffee. Add a little extra water to ensure the desired number of cups.
Replace the carafe on the warming plate with its lid in position.
Putting in the Ground Coffee
- To open the swing away filter holder, move the release button (b) to the right.
- Insert a paper filter (KRUPS size 4 recommended) with the seam towards the handle of the filter holder. Alternatively, use the KRUPS goldtone filter (model #053). Ensure you specify model #314 when ordering.
- Put ground coffee into the filter. A suggestion is one level KRUPS measuring spoon per cup for robust coffee. Adjust the amount to suit your taste after using the maker several times.
- Close the swivel filter holder firmly until it clicks into place.
- Attention! Ensure the filter paper does not tip over when closing the swivel filter. If it does, water may run between the filter paper and holder, resulting in weak coffee.
Aroma Selector Button
The "aroma" button (k) provides control over brewing strength and cycles:
- Press the "aroma" button (k). The current setting appears on the LCD. Press again to cycle through selections:
- Display: `..aroma` (Medium flavor, 4-10 cups)
- Display: `..aroma` (Strong flavor, 4-10 cups)
- Display: `..aroma` (Full flavor, 1-3 cups)
The last selected aroma setting remains in memory until changed. Approximately 4 seconds after selection, the clock time reappears.
Starting the Brewing Process
Press the "ON/OFF" button (p). The indicator light will illuminate, signaling the start of brewing.
Carafe Pre-Warming Cycle
This feature pre-warms the carafe before brewing:
- Follow steps for "Filling the Water Chamber" and "Putting in the Ground Coffee".
- Select desired coffee strength using the "aroma" button (k).
- Within 6 seconds, press the carafe pre-warm button (j). The display will show "on".
- Press the "ON/OFF" button (p). The indicator light will flash, indicating pre-warming.
- Preheating takes approximately 5 minutes, after which brewing automatically begins. The indicator light stops flashing and remains solid red when preheated.
Once the carafe pre-warm button is pressed, the function is stored. It can be cancelled by pressing the button again during pre-warm. Pre-warming is automatically cancelled by power interruption or plug removal.
Aroma Savor Lid
When brewing is complete, the lid seals the filter opening. When pouring, the coffee stream forms a seal on the carafe lid, keeping remaining coffee airtight. This reduces evaporation and heat loss, preserving aroma and freshness.
"Stop'n Serve" Feature
This feature allows serving coffee mid-brew. The "Stop'n Serve" device automatically stops coffee flow if the carafe is removed from the warming plate. You have about 20 seconds to serve a cup or two before reinserting the carafe. The brewing cycle and coffee flow resume upon replacement.
Caution: If coffee drips onto the warming plate after carafe removal, it may indicate a missing/defective seal in the filter holder, or too much coffee causing overflow and interfering with the "snap-shot" action. If this occurs, replace the carafe immediately, allow the full brewing cycle to complete, and do not swing out the filter holder until brewing is finished.
Setting "Wake-Up" Time
Enjoy freshly brewed coffee at a pre-selected time within 24 hours. First, set the digital clock (see "Setting the Time").
- Press the "prog" button (o). The display changes to "Wake-Up" setting, showing the `~` symbol.
- Immediately set the desired brewing commencement time: press the "prog" button to set the hour, then the "auto min." button (q) to set the minutes.
- After setting the "Wake-Up" time, press the "prog" button again or wait approximately 4 seconds. The current clock time reappears, and the display colon will flash.
- To activate the "Wake-Up" setting, press the `~` button (q). A green light indicates the program is set, and the `~` symbol appears. The "Wake-Up" time is now stored. Press "prog" to check the programmed time.
Preparing "Wake-Up" Coffee
To enjoy "Wake-Up" coffee:
- First, set the "Wake-Up" time.
- Add ground coffee.
- Fill the water chamber to the desired cup level.
- Place the carafe on the warming plate.
- Press the "auto" button (q). The indicator light turns green, and the `~` symbol appears. Select the desired aroma setting if not previously done.
- At the programmed time, the indicator light changes from green to red, and brewing begins.
Setting the "Keep-Warm" Temperature
The ProAroma Time maintains coffee temperature in 6 increments:
- Press the "temp" button (m). The current temperature number appears in the display.
- Pressing the "temp" button cycles through temperature levels (1-6).
- Display: `..temp.` (Coffee kept warm gently)
- Display: `..temp.` (Coffee maintained at brewing temperature)
- Display: `..temp.` (Increased temperature maintenance)
The clock time reappears after approximately 4 seconds. The temperature level can be altered at any time.
Adjustable Auto Shut-Off
Select how long the coffee is kept warm (1 to 5 hours) before automatic shut-off:
- Press the "auto off" button (l). The current period (e.g., 2h) appears.
- Continuously pressing "auto off" increases the warming period by one hour, up to a maximum of 5 hours.
- The clock time reappears after approximately 4 seconds. The auto shut-off can be adjusted anytime.
The ProAroma Time can be manually shut off at any time using the "on/off" button (p).
Cleaning
- Always unplug the appliance before cleaning.
- Clean the filter holder, carafe, and carafe lid in hot water and mild liquid soap. These parts are also dishwasher safe (upper rack).
- Never use scouring agents.
- Never immerse the appliance in water or any other liquid. Wipe with a soft, damp cloth.
- Do not clean the inside of the water chamber with a cloth; rinse with cold water periodically.
Decalcifying
Your KRUPS coffee maker requires periodic decalcifying due to calcium in drinking water. The frequency depends on water hardness and usage.
- An automatic sensor displays "CALC" when decalcifying is needed. Ignore brief "CALC" messages; decalcify only when "CALC" appears repeatedly or permanently. The "CALC" display clears after pressing the "on/off" key.
- Use KRUPS original decalcifying agent for best results and to prolong the appliance's life.
How to Decalcify
- Dissolve the decalcifier contents in two cups of cold tap water.
- Pour the solution into the water tank. Place the empty carafe and filter basket in position.
- Press the "aroma" button (k), select the "1-3" cup setting.
- Press the "on/off" key (p). Allow the decalcifying solution to run through one cycle.
- Repeat steps 4-5 two or three times with cold liquid.
- Rinse by cycling clean water through twice, pausing for a few minutes between each rinse session.
Caution: KRUPS decalcifying agent is citric acid and harmless, but keep it out of children's reach. If swallowed, drink water or milk and consult a doctor.
For Best Results
- Always use fresh, cold water.
- Grind your own beans for more aroma and flavor (use one KRUPS measuring spoon per cup).
- Serve coffee immediately after brewing.
- Never reheat coffee.
Hidden Cord Storage
The power cord length can be adjusted using the hidden cord storage located underneath the coffee maker.
