Krups Heliora and Heliora Time Coffee Maker User Manual
Introduction
This document provides comprehensive instructions for operating and maintaining your KRUPS Heliora and KRUPS Heliora Time coffee makers, ensuring optimal performance and longevity.
Key Features
The KRUPS Heliora coffee maker series offers a range of features designed for convenience and superior coffee brewing:
- 24-hour programmable clock with auto shut-off: Available on model #369, allowing you to set brewing times in advance and ensure safety.
- Exclusive KRUPS deep brew system: Features a special filtering action designed to extract maximum flavor from your coffee grounds.
- One-piece removable swivel filter: Offers convenience for use and simplifies the cleaning process.
- "Stop and Serve" feature: Enables you to serve a cup or two of coffee while brewing is in progress, with a mechanism to prevent dripping onto the warming plate for up to 20 seconds.
- Hinged water container lid: Designed to stay attached, preventing loss and protecting the water reservoir from dust and dirt.
- Easy-to-read water level indicator: Clearly displays the amount of water in the reservoir.
- Automatic warming plate: Keeps brewed coffee at an optimal drinking temperature. (Note: Coffee flavor diminishes if kept hot for extended periods; KRUPS recommends serving coffee within one hour of brewing for best aroma and flavor.) The warming plate features a non-stick coating for easy cleaning and raised edges to secure the carafe.
- Advanced heating and tubing system: Minimizes calcification and leaves virtually no residual water in the system after brewing.
- Hidden cord storage: Allows the power cord to be adjusted to the desired length and stored neatly.
Getting Started
Before brewing your first pot of coffee, KRUPS recommends operating the coffee maker once or twice with water only (no coffee or filter) to flush out any manufacturing dust.
Important: Ensure the glass carafe lid is properly positioned over the carafe and pressed firmly into place during the brewing process.
The swivel filter must be closed properly during brewing. You will feel resistance as the handle nears the body; push firmly until it locks. When closed, the water container lid should touch the filter holder handle.
⚠️ Caution: If the swivel filter is not fully closed, the "Stop and Serve" trigger may malfunction, potentially causing hot water or coffee overflow.
The "Stop and Serve" mechanism operates correctly when the glass carafe is properly seated on the warming plate and the swivel filter is securely closed.
Operating Instructions
Model #192 (Heliora)
- Plug the coffee maker into an electrical outlet.
- Switch the "ON/OFF" switch to the "On" position.
Model #369 (Heliora Time)
- Turn the selector switch to the "On" position. The red indicator light will illuminate, confirming the brewing process has commenced (see Figure 12).
Setting the Digital Clock (Model #369)
Upon plugging in the coffee maker, the LCD display will flash intermittently (see Figure 11), indicating that the digital clock needs to be set.
- Ensure the selector switch is in the "Off" position.
- Set the correct hour and minutes by pressing the "H" [Hour] and "Min" [Minute] buttons respectively (see Figure 13). The time is now set.
Brewing Coffee
- Open the hinged water container lid (see Figure 3).
- Using the glass carafe, pour the desired amount of water into the reservoir (see Figure 4). The exterior water level indicator (see Figure 5) helps measure the quantity.
- Note: The final volume of brewed coffee will be slightly less than the water added due to absorption by the coffee grounds. It is recommended to fill the carafe slightly above the desired cup level to ensure the correct number of cups.
- Place the carafe on the warming plate, ensuring the carafe lid is correctly positioned (see Figure 6).
- Swing the swivel filter holder to your right (see Figure 5).
- Insert a paper filter, ensuring the seam is folded over and directed towards the filter holder handle (see Figures 7 & 8). If using a gold-tone filter, lift the water tank lid to insert and remove it.
- ❗ Attention: Verify the paper filter is not tipped when closing the filter holder. An improperly seated filter can cause water to bypass it, resulting in weak coffee.
- Add one slightly rounded scoop of coffee for each cup of water (see Figure 9). You can adjust this ratio to your preference after a few uses.
- Close the swivel filter by pushing it to the left (see Figure 10) until it locks securely. The water container lid should align with the filter holder handle.
- Initiate brewing: For model #192, switch the "ON/OFF" to "On". For model #369, turn the selector switch to "On".
"Stop and Serve" Functionality
This feature allows you to temporarily pause the brewing cycle to serve coffee. Remove the carafe for up to 20 seconds without coffee dripping onto the warming plate. The mechanism functions when the carafe is correctly placed and the swivel filter is closed. Replacing the carafe resumes the brewing cycle.
⚠️ Caution: If dripping occurs after carafe removal, it may indicate too much coffee grounds were used, causing overflow. Replace the carafe, allow the cycle to complete, and then swing out the filter.
Programming Features (Model #369)
Setting the "Wake-Up" Time
Program your coffee maker to brew coffee automatically at a desired time.
- First, set the digital clock (see "Setting the Digital Clock").
- Turn the selector switch to the "Prog" setting. The ⏰ symbol will flash on the display.
- Set the desired hour and minutes for brewing to commence by pressing the "H" [Hour] and "Min" [Minute] buttons (see Figure 13). The "Wake-Up" time is now programmed.
At the set "Wake-Up" time, the indicator light will illuminate, signaling the start of the brewing process.
Note: If the selector switch remains in the "Auto" position, the coffee maker will repeat the programmed brewing cycle daily. To prevent this, switch the unit to "Off" after each use.
"Auto" Setting
When the selector switch is set to "Auto", the coffee maker will automatically activate at the pre-programmed "Wake-Up" time each day. To disable this automatic daily function, ensure the switch is turned to "Off" after use.
Auto Shut-Off Timer
This feature keeps coffee warm for up to 5 hours before automatically shutting off. The default setting is 1 hour, but it can be adjusted.
To adjust the keep-warm time:
- Turn the selector switch to the "Off" position.
- Press and hold the "Min" button. The blinking cup symbol will appear, indicating the auto shut-off is set to 1 hour.
- To increase the keep-warm time in 1-hour increments (up to 5 hours), continue holding the "Min" button while pressing the "H" button.
The selected keep-warm time is stored in memory. If no adjustment is made, the auto shut-off will activate after 1 hour.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Daily Cleaning
- Always unplug the coffee maker before cleaning.
- Remove the filter holder (see Figure 15). Clean the filter holder, glass carafe, and carafe lid using hot water and mild liquid dish soap. These parts are also safe for the upper rack of a dishwasher.
- Avoid using scouring agents or abrasive materials.
- Wipe the exterior of the appliance with a damp cloth. Never immerse the appliance itself in water or any other liquid.
Decalcifying
Mineral deposits from water can clog the coffee maker, reducing its efficiency. A noticeable slowdown in brewing time indicates that decalcifying is necessary.
Procedure for Decalcifying:
- Fill the carafe one-quarter full with white vinegar, then add cold tap water to the top.
- Pour this vinegar-water mixture into the coffee maker's reservoir opening.
- Place the empty carafe on the warming plate and switch the unit to the "On" position.
- Once the mixture has cycled through, switch the unit to the "Off" position.
- Rinse the system by running 2 to 3 carafes of plain cold tap water through the machine.
? Important: Do not pour any liquid other than cold tap water with vinegar into the water chamber during the cleaning process.
To prevent residue, avoid using a cloth inside the water chamber; rinse periodically with cold water.
Tips for Best Results
- Always use fresh, cold water for brewing.
- For optimal aroma and flavor, grind coffee beans just before brewing.
- Serve coffee immediately after it has been brewed.
- Avoid reheating coffee, as this degrades its quality.
Cord Management
The power cord can be adjusted to the desired length using the hidden cord storage compartment located underneath the coffee maker.
