Setting the Digital Clock
- Plug in the KRUPS "Coffee Time Plus".
- Ensure the machine is turned off (red indicator light ? should NOT be illuminated).
- A row of flickering figures will appear in the display, indicating it's time to set the clock.
- Press and hold the "h" (hour) membrane switch to advance the time. Watch the display carefully as it advances quickly.
- Press the "min" (minute) membrane switch to set the precise time.
AM/PM Indicators
AM is indicated by a light in the upper left corner of the LED display; PM is indicated in the lower left corner. If you pass the desired time, repeat the setting procedure.
Preparing the Coffee
Before first use, operate the coffee maker with water only to remove dust.
Steps:
- Ensure the water container is empty.
- The glass carafe lid must be properly positioned during brewing: front hooks inside the carafe, rectangular part pushed down to engage with the handle. To release, push the rectangular part upwards.
- Ensure the swivel filter is closed properly during brewing. It will offer resistance when the handle is about ½ inch away from the side; push firmly until the handle touches the side.
- Caution: If the swivel filter is not properly closed, the "Stop'n Serve" trigger may not function, potentially causing overflow.
- The "Stop'n Serve" mechanism is active when the carafe is in place and the swivel filter is closed.
- Replace the glass carafe on the warming plate with the lid in position.
- Switch the ON/OFF membrane to "ON". The indicator light ? will illuminate, signaling the start of the brewing process.
Diagram: Water Level Indicator
Open the hinged lid and pour the desired quantity of water. The water level indicator shows the amount of water added. Note: The final coffee volume will be slightly less than the water added due to coffee absorption. Add extra water for desired cup count.
Putting in the Ground Coffee
- Swing the swivel filter to the left.
- Insert a paper filter (KRUPS size 4 recommended, seam towards filter handle) or a KRUPS gold-plated filter (model #IF017).
- Add ground coffee: one level KRUPS measuring spoon per cup for robust coffee. Adjust to taste after several uses.
- Attention: Ensure the filter paper does not tip over when closing the swivel filter to prevent weak coffee.
- Close the swivel filter firmly until the handle touches the side.
Selecting the Fullest Flavor
The KRUPS "Coffee Time Plus" models have a full flavor selector.
- For 1-3 cups, press the full flavor switch. A green indicator light ? indicates the 1-3 cup selection. This slows brewing for richer, aromatic coffee.
- For 4-12 cups, select regular brewing (green indicator light ? is not illuminated).
- Hot water must seep through ground coffee for a minimum time for aromatic coffee.
Auto Shut-Off and Warm Keeping
The coffee maker has an automatic shut-off feature, turning off 2 hours after brewing begins (red indicator light ? turns off). This prevents flavor loss, saves energy, and enhances safety.
Coffee remains warm as long as the red indicator light ? above the ON/OFF switch is illuminated. For best aroma, KRUPS recommends serving coffee not kept warm for more than 1 hour, as coffee solubles are chemically unstable.
Setting "Wake-Up" Time
This feature allows for freshly brewed coffee at a pre-selected time within a 24-hour period.
Procedure:
- After setting the digital clock, press the "Program" switch. A green indicator light ? indicates readiness for programming.
- Immediately press the "hour" and then the "minute" switches to set the desired "Wake-Up" time.
- After a few seconds, the LED clock will revert to the regular time, confirming the "Wake-Up" time is stored.
- To check the programmed time, press the "Program" switch; the "Wake-Up" time will display for a few seconds.
- To change the time, press "Program" again and repeat the setting procedure.
Preparing "Wake-Up" Coffee
- Set the desired "Wake-Up" time.
- Add ground coffee and fill the water chamber.
- Place the carafe on the warming platform.
- Press the "Auto" switch; the red indicator light ? will illuminate.
- At the programmed time, the "Auto" light turns off, and the ON/OFF light illuminates, starting the brewing process.
- Coffee will be kept warm for two hours, then the heating mechanism shuts off automatically.
"Stop'n Serve" Feature
This feature allows serving coffee during brewing. The flow of brewed coffee stops automatically if the carafe is removed from the warming plate for up to 20 seconds. Replacing the carafe resumes the brewing cycle.
The "Stop'n Serve" device effectively seals the filter cone, minimizing drips onto the warming plate.
Caution:
If coffee drips onto the warming plate after carafe removal, check the small black seal in the filter holder for missing or defective parts. Alternatively, too much ground coffee may cause overflow, interfering with the "Stop'n Serve" action. If overflow occurs, replace the carafe, let the cycle complete, and do not swing out the filter until brewing is finished.
Power Failure Back-Up
An electronic device stores all functions for 15 minutes during power surges or failures.
Example: If "Auto" light is ON ? and a power failure exceeds 15 minutes, the wake-up coffee will be cancelled. If the coffee maker is ON during a failure, it suspends operation and resumes when power is restored within 15 minutes. For failures longer than 15 minutes, press "ON/OFF" again to resume. If the power failure is longer than 15 minutes, all functions, including time and pre-programmed time, must be re-entered, indicated by a blinking LED display.
Cleaning
- Always unplug the appliance before cleaning.
- Clean the filter holder, the carafe, and carafe lid with hot water and mild liquid soap. These parts are also dishwasher safe (upper rack).
- Never use scouring agents.
- Do not immerse the appliance in water; wipe with a soft, damp cloth.
- Avoid cleaning the inside of the water chamber with a cloth; rinse with cold water periodically.
Decalcifying
Periodic decalcifying is necessary due to calcium in drinking water, especially in hard water areas. Frequency depends on water hardness and usage.
When to Decalcify:
A slowdown in brewing time indicates calcium deposits. KRUPS recommends using their original decalcifying agent.
How to Decalcify:
- Dissolve one package of Better Brew in two cups of cold tap water.
- Pour solution into the water tank. Place empty carafe and filter basket.
- Run the coffeemaker until half the solution flows into the carafe.
- Turn the coffeemaker OFF and let stand for 10 minutes.
- Turn the coffeemaker back ON to let the remaining solution flow into the carafe.
- Rinse by cycling clean water through the machine 2-3 times. Repeat the entire process twice, pausing between rinses.
Recommendation: Decalcify with Better Brew 4 times per year or whenever the brewing cycle slows down.
Caution:
KRUPS decalcifying agent (citric acid) is harmless but keep out of reach of children. Do not ingest. If swallowed, drink water or milk and consult a doctor.
For Best Results
- Use fresh, cold water.
- Grind beans fresh for more aroma and flavor (one KRUPS measuring spoon per cup).
- Serve coffee immediately after brewing.
- Never reheat coffee.
