Introduction
This document provides instructions for the KRUPS Crystal Arome and Crystal Arome Time coffee makers, models #398 and #458 respectively. These coffee makers offer features designed for convenience and quality coffee brewing.
The KRUPS Crystal Arome coffee maker features a unique "Crystal Clear" vegetable-based cocoa filter that removes up to 82% of unwanted chlorine from water, enhancing the coffee's smoothness and richness while retaining important minerals. The hermetically designed carafe and lid keep coffee hotter for longer periods without compromising aroma or taste.
The Crystal Arome Time model includes a 24-hour programmable timer for "wake-up" coffee and a programmable auto shut-off feature. Both models feature a filtration indicator to signal when the filter needs changing or the coffeemaker requires decalcifying, a convenient filter holder, a "Stop'n Serve" feature for pouring coffee mid-brew, a hinged water container lid, an easy-to-read water level indicator, and a non-stick warming plate with raised edges for stability. Hidden cord storage allows for adjustable cord length.

- Plug in the coffee maker and ensure the selector panel (i) is on the "off" position.
- The LCD display will flash intermittently, indicating it's time to set the clock.
- Turn the selector switch to the '0' [set time] position.
- Set the hour and minutes by pressing the [hour button] ('h') and [minute button] ('min.') buttons respectively. The time is now set.
Initial Brewing (Water Only)
Before making your first pot of coffee, it is recommended to operate the coffeemaker once or twice with water only, without ground coffee or a paper filter, to remove any possible dust.
Brewing Coffee
Preparing the Coffee Maker:
- Ensure the water container is empty. Remove any inserted literature.
- Position the lid of the glass carafe properly during the brewing process, snapping it into place.
- Place the carafe directly underneath the brewing spout.
Filling the Water Chamber:
Open the hinged lid. Using the glass carafe, pour the desired quantity of water into the water chamber. The water level indicator shows the amount of water being added. Note that the amount of brewed coffee will be slightly less than the water added due to coffee absorption.
It is recommended to add a little extra water at the beginning to ensure the desired number of cups are brewed. Replace the glass carafe on the warming plate with its lid in position.
Adding Ground Coffee:
- With the hinged lid open, insert a paper filter (KRUPS size 4 recommended) into the filter holder, ensuring the seam faces right.
- For robust coffee, use one level KRUPS measuring scoop of ground coffee per cup. Adjust the amount to your taste after several uses.
- Close the hinged lid, ensuring the filter holder is securely in place.
Brewing with Model #398:
The Model #398 features a flavor selector button. Press the '1-3' button to brew 1-3 cups, which extends the brewing cycle for richer coffee. For 4-10 cups, press the '4-max' flavor selector button. Then, press the ON/OFF switch to the 'I' position. The indicator light will illuminate, and brewing will commence.
Brewing with Model #458:
Turn the selector switch to the "on" position. The red indicator light will illuminate, indicating that the brewing process has begun.
"Stop'n Serve" Feature
This feature automatically stops the flow of brewed coffee through the filter cone if the glass carafe is removed from the warming plate during brewing. You have approximately 20 seconds to serve one or two cups before the device closes the filter cone, preventing drips. Replacing the carafe resumes the brewing cycle.
CAUTION: If coffee drips onto the warming plate after carafe removal, it may indicate too much ground coffee was used, causing overflow. Replace the carafe immediately and allow the full brewing cycle to complete. Do not remove the filter until brewing is finished.
Preparing "Wake-Up" Coffee (Model #458)
To enjoy freshly brewed coffee at a set time:
- Set the "wake-up" time by turning the selector switch to the "prog." [program] setting. The [clock symbol] will flash. Press the [hour button] ('h') and [minute button] ('min.') to set the desired start time.
- Put in ground coffee and fill the water chamber to the desired cup level.
- Place the carafe back on the warming plate.
- Turn the selector switch to the "auto." [auto] setting. The [auto symbol] will remain constant, indicating the coffee maker is programmed.
- At the pre-programmed time, the indicator light will illuminate, and brewing will begin.
NOTE: If the selector switch remains in the "auto." position, the coffee maker will activate daily at the programmed time. Turn the selector to "off" ('0') after each use if this is not desired.
Auto Shut-Off Feature (Model #458)
This feature keeps coffee hot for up to 5 hours and then automatically shuts off. By default, it is set for 1 hour. To adjust the keep warm time:
- Turn the switch to the "off" position.
- Press the "min." [minute button] to set auto shut-off to 1 hour (indicated by a blinking cup icon).
- To increase the keep warm time in 1-hour increments (up to 5 hours), keep the "min." button pressed and press the "hours" button.
- The programmed time is stored until changed. If no keep warm time is set, it defaults to 1 hour.
Maintenance and Care
Filtration Indicator & Decalcifying
The filtration indicator alerts you when it's time to change the "Crystal Clear" charcoal filter (typically after 80 cycles) and when the coffeemaker needs decalcifying.
- Model #398: The filtration indicator (d) turns red when it's time to change the filter. Once changed, press the small hole to the left of the indicator to reset it to 0 cycles.
- Model #458: The filtration indicator (j) illuminates and flashes when it's time to change the filter. Push the small hole to the left of the light with a pointed instrument to reset the indicator to 0 cycles after changing the filter.
Inserting/Changing the "Crystal Clear" Filter
- Lift out the grey filter cartridge (a) located next to the water chamber.
- Open the bottom hinged portion of the cartridge by twisting to the left.
- Remove and discard the old filter.
- Insert a new filter by dropping it into the filter cartridge.
- Replace the filter cartridge back into the chamber.
NOTE: Replacement filters can be purchased by contacting the KRUPS Consumer Service Department.
Hidden Cord Storage
The power cord length can be adjusted using the hidden cord storage located behind the coffeemaker.
Decalcifying
Your KRUPS coffeemaker requires periodic cleaning with a decalcifying agent due to calcium (limestone) deposits from drinking water. The frequency depends on water hardness and usage. In areas with hard water, decalcifying may be needed more often.
Cleaning
- Always unplug the coffeemaker before cleaning.
- Remove the filter holder. Clean the filter holder, carafe, and carafe lid in hot water with mild liquid soap. These parts are also top-rack dishwasher safe.
- Never use scouring agents.
- Never immerse the appliance itself in water or any other liquid. Clean the exterior by wiping with a soft, damp cloth.
- Avoid using a cloth to clean the inside of the water chamber, as this can leave fuzzy deposits. Rinse the chamber with cold water periodically.
