- Electronically controlled dual brewing cycle: Slows brewing for less than 3 cups to ensure full-bodied flavor.
- "Stop 'n Serve" feature: Allows serving coffee while brewing; the automatic filter seal permits carafe removal for up to 20 seconds without dripping.
- Automatic warming plate: Maintains coffee temperature. Note: Aroma degrades after one hour; serving coffee kept warm longer than one hour is not recommended.
- Krups specially designed heating and tubing system: Minimizes calcification and leaves no residual water after brewing.
Preparing Coffee
Before making your first pot, it is recommended to operate the coffee maker once or twice with water only (no coffee or filter) to remove any dust.
- Ensure the water container is empty. Remove any literature if inserted.
- The lid of the glass carafe must be properly positioned during brewing. Snap the rectangular piece onto the handle to lock the lid in place.
- Make sure the swing-away filter holder (e) is properly closed. You will feel noticeable resistance and hear a "click" when it is securely in place.
- Caution: If the swivel filter is not completely closed, the "Stop 'n Serve" trigger may not function correctly, potentially causing hot water or coffee overflow.
Filling the Water Chamber
- Open the hinged lid (refer to figure 1).
- Pour in the desired quantity of water (refer to figure 2).
- The water level indicator shows the amount of water being filled (refer to figure 3).
The amount of brewed coffee will be slightly less than the water added due to absorption by ground coffee. Add a little extra water to achieve the desired number of cups.
Replace the carafe on the warming plate with the glass carafe lid in position.
Putting in the Ground Coffee
- To open the swing-away filter holder, move the filter handle to the left (refer to figure 4).
- Insert a paper filter (KRUPS size 4 recommended) with the seam pointing towards the handle (refer to figure 5). Alternatively, the KRUPS goldtone filter (model #053) can be used. When ordering, specify model #464.
- Add ground coffee into the paper filter (refer to figure 6). A suggestion is one level KRUPS measuring spoon per cup for robust coffee. Adjust to taste after several uses.
- Close the swivel filter, ensuring it is completely closed by pushing firmly until it "clicks" into place. You will feel noticeable resistance.
Attention: Ensure the filter paper does not tip over when closing the swivel filter. If it does, water may run between the filter paper and holder, resulting in weak coffee.
Plug in the coffeemaker and turn the on/off switch to the "on" position (right switch for right side, left switch for left side) (refer to figure 8). Replace the glass carafe on the warming plate with the lid securely in position (refer to figure 9).
Selecting the Fullest Flavor
The KRUPS Duothek has a full flavor selector switch. For 1-3 cups of coffee, turn this switch to the appropriate position (refer to figure 10). This extends the brewing cycle, allowing water to seep slowly through the coffee grounds for a rich, aromatic, and delicious brew (works on the left side only).
For making 4-12 cups, the full-flavor switch should be turned to the "4-max" position.
"Stop'n Serve" Feature
The "Stop 'n Serve" feature allows serving coffee during the brewing cycle. It automatically stops the flow of brewed coffee when the glass carafe is removed from the warming plate. You have approximately 20 seconds to serve one or two cups before reinserting the carafe.
The device effectively closes the filter cone, preventing significant dripping onto the warming plate (at most, one drop).
Once the carafe is replaced, the brewing cycle and coffee flow resume.
Caution: If coffee drips onto the warming plate after carafe removal, it may indicate a missing or defective small black seal in the filter holder. Alternatively, too much ground coffee can cause overflow, interfering with the "Stop 'n Serve" action. If this occurs, replace the carafe immediately and allow the brewing cycle to complete. Do not swing out the swivel filter until brewing is finished.
Cleaning
- Always unplug the appliance before cleaning. Remove the filter holder by opening it and lifting it off (refer to figure 11).
- Clean the filter holder, carafe, and carafe lid in hot water and mild liquid soap. These parts are also dishwasher safe (upper rack).
- Never use scouring agents.
- Never immerse the appliance itself in water or any other liquid. Wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth.
- Never use a cloth to clean the inside of the water chamber; rinse with cold water periodically to avoid fuzzy deposits.
Decalcifying
Although the KRUPS coffee maker has an advanced water heating and pumping system, periodic cleaning with a decalcifying agent is necessary due to calcium (limestone) in drinking water. The frequency depends on water hardness and usage.
For best results:
- Always use fresh, cold water.
- Grind your own beans for maximum aroma and flavor (one KRUPS measuring spoon per cup recommended).
- Serve coffee immediately after brewing.
- Never reheat coffee.
When to decalcify:
A noticeable slowdown in brewing time indicates calcium deposits. Using a decalcifying agent, as per instructions, will prolong the coffee maker's life. Decalcifying agents are available in department and gourmet stores, or by contacting KRUPS Consumer Service.
