KRUPS ProAroma Electronic Features
Your new KRUPS "ProAroma Electronic" has the following features:
- Exclusive KRUPS deep brew system with special filtering action for maximum flavor.
- Touch button electronic brewing cycles allow selection of 1-3 cups, 4-10 cups (medium), or 4-10 cups (strong). When brewing less than 5 cups, the electronic control slows down the brewing process, ensuring good coffee every time.
- Swing away 2-part filter holder with release button is convenient to use and easy to clean.
- "Stop'n Serve" feature interrupts the brewing cycle to let you pour a cup or two of coffee while brewing. The automatic filter seal allows you to remove the carafe for 20 seconds without coffee dripping onto the warming plate.
- Aroma Savor System lid locks in flavor and aroma by creating a seal on the carafe lid.
- Carafe Pre-Warming Cycle pre-warms the carafe so every cup of coffee is hot, from first to last.
- Automatic Shut-Off feature turns the coffeemaker off after 2 hours.
- Magnified water level indicator is easy to read.
- Automatic warming plate will keep coffee hot at all times. When coffee is kept hot for a prolonged period of time, it will begin to lose its aroma. (KRUPS recommends not to serve coffee which has been kept warm for more than 1 hour).
- Automatic warming plate has non-stick coating for easy cleaning. Raised edges keep carafe firmly in place.
- KRUPS specially designed heating and tubing system minimizes calcification and leaves no residual water in the system when brewing is finished.
- Hidden cord storage allows you to set the cord length as needed.
- Hinged water container lid protects the water container from dust and dirt.
Preparing Coffee
Before making your first pot of delicious coffee, KRUPS recommends operating the coffee maker once or twice with water only, without ground coffee or a paper filter, to remove any possible dust.
- Be sure that the water container is empty. Remove literature, etc., if inserted in the water container.
- The lid of the glass carafe must be properly positioned during the brewing process. Position the lid over the carafe and snap the rectangular piece onto the handle. The lid is then locked in place.
- Make sure that the swivel filter (c) is properly closed during the brewing process. When closing the swivel filter, you will feel a noticeable resistance when the handle of the swivel filter is approximately 1/2 inch away from the non-removable base. Push in firmly until you hear the filter "click" into place.
Caution: If the swivel filter is not completely closed, it will not function properly, which may cause hot water or hot coffee to overflow.
- The "Stop'n Serve" mechanism is open as long as the glass carafe is inserted into the machine and sits properly on the warming plate and the swivel filter is properly closed.
- Filling the Water Chamber: Open the hinged lid (a). Using the glass carafe, pour in the desired quantity of water. The water level indicator (j) shows how much water you are pouring into the container. The amount of freshly brewed coffee delivered will always be slightly less than the amount put into the water container due to absorption by the ground coffee. Therefore, it is recommended to add a little extra water to achieve the desired number of cups.
- Replace the glass carafe on the warming plate with the glass carafe lid in position.
- Putting in the Ground Coffee: Press the release button (b) to the right to open the swivel filter. Swing out the filter to the left. Insert a paper filter (KRUPS recommends size 4) with the seam pointing towards the handle of the filter holder. Alternatively, the KRUPS GoldTone Filter (model #053) can be used. (When ordering from KRUPS, specify model #313).
- Use one level KRUPS measuring scoop of ground coffee for each cup desired for robust coffee. After using the coffee maker several times, you can adjust the measure to suit your taste.
- Close the swivel filter (c) and make sure that it is completely closed.
Attention: Make sure that the filter paper does not tip over when closing the swivel filter. If this happens, the water might run between the filter paper and the filter holder, producing very weak coffee. This blockage and subsequent dripping do occur, replace the glass carafe immediately and allow the brewing cycle to complete without grounds in the filter holder.
- Place the glass carafe (d) with the lid on the warming plate (e). Plug in the coffeemaker.
Carafe Pre-Warming Cycle
This feature allows you to pre-warm the carafe before the brewing process begins.
- Follow the steps in "Filling the Water Chamber" and "Putting in the Ground Coffee".
- To start the process, select the coffee strength you desire by pressing the appropriate button (h).
- Within 6 seconds, press the carafe pre-warm button (f). The indicator light (g) will flash, indicating that you have chosen to pre-warm the carafe.
- Pre-heating takes approximately 5 minutes, after which the brewing process will automatically begin. Once the carafe is pre-heated, the indicator light will stop flashing but remain solid red.
Note: Once you press the carafe pre-warm button, the function is stored in memory. The next time you make coffee, the carafe will automatically be pre-warmed. The function can be cancelled by pressing the carafe pre-warm button during the pre-warm stage. The light will then remain solid red, indicating that pre-warming is cancelled.
The carafe pre-warm cycle is suggested between the removal of the carafe and its being reinserted to allow the service of one or two cups of coffee. The "Stop'n Serve" device closes off the filter so effectively that there is virtually no coffee drip onto the warming plate.
Caution: If coffee does drip onto the warming plate after removal of the carafe, it is usually an indication that too much ground coffee has been placed into the paper filter. This causes the water that jets into the filter cone to overflow between the paper filter and the filter holder, producing very weak coffee. This blockage and subsequent dripping do occur, replace the glass carafe immediately and allow the brewing cycle to complete without grounds in the filter holder.
Control Panel Operation & Fullest Flavor
The KRUPS ProAroma Electronic features 3 electronically controlled brewing cycles and a full flavor selector button, so you can make coffee to suit your personal taste.
- For 1-3 cups of coffee, press the corresponding button (h). This will extend the brewing cycle so that the water will seep into the ground coffee slowly enough to yield brewed coffee that is rich, aromatic, and truly delicious.
- For a stronger, more stimulating cup of coffee with a powerful aroma, press the 4-10 cup button (h).
- For a medium and more mellow flavor, press the other 4-10 cup button (h).
"Stop'n Serve" Feature: This device automatically stops the flow of brewed coffee through the filter cone if the glass carafe is removed from the warming plate during the brewing cycle. You have about 20 seconds between the removal of the carafe and its being reinserted to allow the service of one or two cups of coffee. The "Stop'n Serve" device closes off the filter so effectively that there is virtually no coffee drip onto the warming plate (one drop, at most!). Once the carafe is replaced, the brewing cycle and the flow of coffee into the carafe are resumed.
Aroma Savor Lid: When brewing is complete, the last drop to leave the filter seals the opening within the lid of the carafe. When pouring, the stream of coffee forms a seal in the carafe lid, so the remaining coffee is in an airtight container. This reduces evaporation and heat loss, and protects the aroma and freshness of the coffee.
Cleaning
Caution: Always unplug the coffee maker before cleaning.
- Remove the filter holder (c) and clean the filter holder, the carafe, and carafe lid in a solution of hot water and mild liquid soap.
- These parts can also be placed in the upper level of a dishwasher for effective cleaning.
- Never use scouring agents.
- Never immerse the appliance itself in water or any other liquid. To clean, simply wipe off with a soft, damp cloth.
- Never use a cloth to clean the inside of the water chamber, as this might leave fuzzy deposits in the chamber. Just rinse with cold water, periodically.
Decalcifying
Although your KRUPS coffee maker has an advanced water heating and pumping system, it will periodically need cleaning with a decalcifying agent.
- This is due to the calcium (limestone) found in drinking water.
- In areas where the water is hard, you will need to decalcify more frequently than in areas with soft water.
- It will also depend upon how often you use your coffee maker.
When to Decalcify:
You will know when such a cleaning is necessary by an obvious slowdown in the brewing time of your coffee. This extended time indicates that there is a calcium deposit in your coffee maker.
Decalcifier is a citric acid which is harmless. However, KRUPS recommends keeping it out of the reach of children. Do not take internally. If swallowed accidentally, drink several glasses of water or milk and consult your doctor.
Decalcifier is widely available and can be purchased from the KRUPS Consumer Service Department.

Tips for Best Results
- Always use fresh, cold water (warm water might be stale and have mineral deposits which would impair the flavor of the coffee).
- KRUPS recommends grinding your own beans. Freshly ground beans deliver more aroma and flavor.
- Use one KRUPS measuring scoop of beans per cup.
- Serve coffee immediately after brewing.
- Never reheat coffee.
Hidden Cord Storage
The power cord can be tailored to the length required by utilizing the hidden cord storage located underneath the coffee maker.
