Special Cord Set Instructions & Cautions

Regarding your Cord Set:

  • A short power-supply cord is provided to reduce risks resulting from becoming entangled in or tripping over a longer cord.
  • Longer extension cords may be used if care is exercised in their use.
  • If a long extension cord is used, ensure (1) its marked electrical rating is at least as great as the appliance's rating, (2) if the appliance is grounded, the extension cord is a grounding-type 3-wire cord, and (3) the longer cord is arranged so it will not drape over the counter or table where it can be pulled on by children or tripped over.
  • This appliance has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). To reduce the risk of electric shock, this plug is intended to fit into a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully into the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician. Do not attempt to modify the plug in any way.

CAUTION:

This appliance is for household use. Any servicing other than cleaning and user maintenance should be performed by an authorized KRUPS Service Center. Do not immerse the base in water or any other liquid. To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not remove the base. There are no user-serviceable parts inside; repair should be done by authorized service personnel only.

  • Check voltage to be sure that the voltage indicated on the name plate agrees with your voltage.
  • Never use warm or hot water to fill the water container! Use cold water only!
  • Never refill the water chamber while this KRUPS coffee maker is in operation (in the "on" position). Turn the KRUPS coffee maker off and let it cool down for 10 minutes before refilling with water.

Before turning your KRUPS coffee maker on, please make sure that:

  1. The filter is properly inserted into the swivel filter.
  2. The swivel filter is properly closed.
  3. The lid for the glass carafe is properly attached to the glass carafe.
  4. The glass carafe sits flat on the inside circle of the heating plate.
  • Keep your hands and the cord away from hot parts of the appliance during operation.
  • Never clean with scouring powders or hard implements.

Getting Started and Operation

Setting the Digital Clock

  1. Plug in the KRUPS ProAroma 12 Time. Ensure the coffeemaker is turned off (the red light should not be illuminated).
  2. The LCD display will flash, indicating it's time to set the digital clock.
  3. Press the "time" button (n) on the selector panel. Press the "auto" button (q) and advance to the proper hour. Press the "on/off" button (p) and advance to set the precise minutes.
  4. The AM or PM indicator will be illuminated. If you pass the desired time, hold the "auto" button (q) until the desired time is reached.
  5. To lock in the time, press the "time" button (n) again. The time will automatically set after 4 seconds. Flashing dots in the LCD display confirm the time has been properly set.

Preparing Coffee

Before making your first pot of coffee, it is recommended to operate the coffee maker once or twice with water only, without ground coffee or a paper filter, to remove any possible dust.

  • Ensure the water container is empty. Remove any literature if inserted.
  • The lid of the glass carafe must be properly positioned during brewing. Position the lid over the carafe and snap the rectangular piece onto the handle to lock it in place.
  • Make sure the swing-away filter holder (c) is properly closed. You will feel noticeable resistance between the filter holder and the base. Push firmly until you hear a "click".

Caution: If the swivel filter is not completely closed, the "Stop'n Serve" trigger will not function properly, which may cause hot water or hot coffee to overflow.

The "Stop'n Serve" mechanism is engaged as long as the glass carafe is inserted, sits properly on the warming plate, and the swivel filter is properly closed.

Filling the Water Chamber

  1. Open the hinged lid (refer to figure 3 in original document).
  2. Pour in the desired quantity of water (refer to figure 5).
  3. The water level indicator shows how much water you are filling into the container (refer to figure 6).

The amount of brewed coffee delivered will be slightly less than the amount of water added due to absorption by ground coffee. Therefore, add a little more water than the desired number of cups to ensure you have the full amount.

Replace the carafe on the warming plate with the glass carafe lid in position.

Inserting/Changing the "NaturActiv" Filter

  1. To insert or change the "NaturActiv" filter, remove the plastic filter housing (r) from inside the water chamber.
  2. Remove the bottom portion of the housing (refer to figure 1).
  3. Remove and discard the old filter.
  4. Insert a new filter by dropping it into the bottom housing piece. Snap back into the filter housing (refer to figure 2).
  5. Replace the housing unit back into the water chamber (refer to figure 4).

Each filter will last approximately 40 cycles. Replacement filters can be purchased by calling KRUPS Consumer Service Department at 1-800-526-5377.

Attention! Make sure that the filter paper does not tip over when closing the swivel filter, or else water might run between the filter paper and the filter holder, producing a very weak cup of coffee.

Close the swivel filter and ensure it is completely closed (refer to figure 10).

Putting in the Ground Coffee

  1. To open the swing-away filter holder, move the release button (b) to the right to swing the filter out (refer to figure 7).
  2. Insert a paper filter (KRUPS size 4 recommended) with the seam pointing towards the handle of the filter holder (refer to figure 8). Alternatively, use the KRUPS goldtone filter (model #053). When ordering, specify model #453.
  3. Put ground coffee into the paper filter (refer to figure 9).

It is suggested to use one level KRUPS measuring spoon of ground coffee for each cup of robust brewed coffee. Adjust the measure to your taste after several uses.

Aroma Selector Button

The "aroma" button (k) provides control over brewing strength and cycles to suit your personal taste.

Press the "aroma" button (k). The current aroma setting will appear in the LCD display. Press the "aroma" button (k) again to cycle through the selections.

There are three selections:

Display Description
Aroma For 4-12 cups of coffee; delivers a medium and more mellow flavor.
Aroma For 4-12 cups of coffee; delivers a stronger, more stimulating coffee, with a powerful aroma.
Aroma For 1-3 cups of coffee; full flavor and aroma.

Approximately 4 seconds after making your aroma selection, the time will reappear in the display window. The last-selected aroma setting remains in memory until manually changed.

To begin the brewing process, press the "ON/OFF" button (p). The indicator light will illuminate, indicating the brewing process has begun (refer to figure 11).

Carafe Pre-Warming Cycle

This feature allows you to pre-warm the carafe before brewing. Follow the steps in "Filling the Water Chamber" and "Putting in the Ground Coffee".

To start, select your desired coffee strength using the "aroma" button (k). Within 6 seconds, press the carafe pre-warm button (j). The display will show "on". Press the "on/off" button (p). The indicator light will flash, indicating pre-warm mode. Pre-heating takes approximately 5 minutes, after which brewing automatically begins. The indicator light will stop flashing but remain solid red once the carafe is pre-heated.

Note! Once you press the carafe pre-warm button, the function is stored in memory. The next time you make coffee, the carafe will automatically be pre-warmed.

The function can be cancelled by pressing the carafe pre-warm button during the pre-warm stage. The light will then remain solid red. Carafe pre-warming is automatically cancelled in the event of a power shortage or plug removal.

When the brewing cycle is complete, the last drop from the filter seals the opening within the carafe lid. When pouring, the stream of coffee forms a seal on the carafe lid, keeping the remaining coffee in an airtight container, reducing evaporation and heat loss, and protecting aroma and freshness.

Advanced Features

Stop'n Serve Feature

The "Stop'n Serve" feature is KRUPS' solution for impatient coffee drinkers seeking a quick cup. This device automatically stops the flow of brewed coffee through the filter cone if the glass carafe is removed from the warming plate during brewing. You have about 20 seconds between carafe removal and reinsertion to serve one or two cups. The "Stop'n Serve" device closes the filter cone so effectively that there is virtually no coffee drip onto the warming plate (at most, one drop!). Once the carafe is replaced, the brewing cycle and coffee flow resume.

Caution: If coffee drips onto the warming plate after carafe removal, it usually indicates the small seal in the filter holder is missing or defective. It's also possible that too much ground coffee was placed in the filter, causing water to overflow between the filter paper and holder. This overflow carries grounds that interfere with the "Stop'n Serve" action, allowing coffee to drip.

If blockage and dripping occur, replace the glass carafe immediately and allow the full brewing cycle to complete. Do not swing out the swivel filter until the brewing cycle is finished.

Setting "Wake-Up" Time

This feature allows you to enjoy freshly brewed coffee at any pre-selected time within a 24-hour period. To use this feature, you must first set the digital clock (see Setting the Time):

  1. Press the "prog" button (o). The display will change from the current clock setting to the "Wake-Up" setting. The R symbol will appear, and the display will not flash.
  2. Immediately select the time you want the brewing process to commence (refer to diagram).
  3. Once the "Wake-Up" time is set, press the "prog" key or wait approximately 4 seconds. The current clock time will reappear, and the display colon will flash.

To activate the "Wake-Up" setting, press the "auto" button (q). A green light will indicate the "Wake-Up" program has been set and stored in memory. To check the programmed "Wake-Up" time, simply press the "prog." button, and the time will be displayed.

Preparing "Wake-Up" Coffee

To enjoy delicious "Wake-Up" coffee that is freshly brewed and hot, first set the "Wake-Up" time (see Setting the "Wake-Up" Time). Then:

  • Put in ground coffee.
  • Fill the water chamber to the desired number of cups.
  • Place the carafe back on the warming plate.
  • Press the "auto" button (q). The indicator light will turn green, and the P symbol will appear in the display (refer to figure 13).
  • Enter the desired aroma setting, if not previously done.

At the pre-programmed time, the indicator light will change from green to red, indicating the brewing process has begun.

Setting the "Keep-Warm" Temperature

The ProAroma 12 Time has a "keep-warm" feature that maintains coffee temperature in 6 increments. To set the "keep-warm" temperature, press the "temp" button (m). The currently entered temperature number will appear in the display. By pressing the "temp." button, you can select the desired level of temperature (1-6).

Display Description
1 The coffee will be kept warm gently.
2 The coffee will be kept warm gently.
3 The coffee will be kept warm gently.
4 After brewing, the coffee will continue to be held at the brewing temperature.
5 After brewing, the temperature at which coffee is maintained will be increased.
6 After brewing, the temperature at which coffee is maintained will be increased.

After approximately 4 seconds, the current clock time will reappear in the display. The temperature level can be altered at any time.

Adjustable Auto Shut-Off

The ProAroma 12 Time allows you to select how long the coffee stays warm, from 1 to 5 hours, before automatically turning off. To set the warming period, press the "auto off" button (l). The currently entered period will appear (e.g., 2h) in the display window.

By continuously pressing the "auto off" button, the warming period will increase by one hour until the maximum period of 5 hours is reached.

Display Description
1h The 5 lengths of the warming period.
5h The 5 lengths of the warming period.

Upon making your selection, the clock time will reappear in the display window after approximately 4 seconds. The automatic shut-off can be adjusted at any time.

Note: The ProAroma 12 Time may be manually shut off at any time by using the "on/off" button.

Maintenance

Cleaning

Always unplug this appliance before cleaning.

  • Clean the filter holder, the carafe, and carafe lid in a solution of hot water and mild liquid soap (refer to figure 14). These parts can also be placed in the upper level of your dishwasher for safe, effective cleaning.
  • Never use scouring agents.
  • Do not place metal objects, such as flatware, silverware, coins, steel wool, etc., inside the carafe at any time, as glass may break or fracture as a result of impact.
  • Never immerse the appliance itself in water or any other liquid. To clean, simply wipe off with a soft, damp cloth.
  • Never use a cloth to clean the inside of the water chamber, as this might leave fuzzy deposits. Rinse with cold water periodically.

Decalcifying

Although your KRUPS coffee maker has an advanced water heating and pumping system, it will periodically need cleaning with a decalcifying agent. This is due to the calcium (limestone) found in drinking water. In areas with hard water, you will need to decalcify more frequently.

The need for decalcifying also depends on how often you use the coffee maker. An automatic sensor built into your ProAroma 12 Time will display the message "CALC" when decalcifying is needed. This sensor is sensitive, and the "CALC" message may appear briefly under certain circumstances and can be ignored. Decalcification is necessary only when "CALC" appears repeatedly or permanently. The "CALC" display will remain visible until the "on/off" key is pressed.

We recommend using KRUPS original decalcifying agent. When used according to instructions, it will prolong the life of your coffeemaker.

How to Decalcify:

  1. Dissolve the contents of the decalcifier in two cups of cold tap water.
  2. Pour the solution into the water tank, then place the empty carafe and filter basket in place.
  3. Press the "aroma" button.
  4. Select the "1-3" cup setting.
  5. Press the "on/off" key. Allow the decalcifying solution to run through one cycle.
  6. Repeat steps 1-5 two or three times with cold liquid.
  7. Rinse by cycling clean water through twice, pausing and turning the coffeemaker "off" for a few minutes between each rinse session.

Caution: KRUPS decalcifying agent is a citric acid which is harmless. However, we recommend keeping it out of the reach of children. Do not take internally. If swallowed accidentally, drink several glasses of water or milk and consult your doctor.

For best results:

  • Always use fresh, cold water (warm water might be stale and have mineral deposits which would impair the flavor of the coffee).
  • We recommend grinding your own beans. Freshly ground beans deliver more aroma and flavor. Use one KRUPS measuring spoon of beans per cup.
  • Serve coffee immediately after brewing.
  • Never reheat coffee.

Hidden Cord Storage

The power cord can be tailored to the required length by utilizing the hidden cord storage located underneath the coffee maker (refer to figure 15).
