Installation Guide
Removing the Jounce Bumper and Placing the Assembly on the Axle
Step 1
Raise the vehicle and support it using safety stands so the axle can be safely dropped away from the frame. Ensure the air spring assemblies can be positioned between the axle and frame. Remove the wheels.
Step 2
Unbolt and remove the jounce bumper from the frame.
Diagram Description: Shows the jounce bumper being unbolted and removed from the vehicle's frame.
Step 3
If necessary, remove the harness retainer from the frame rail to make more room for the upper bracket.
Diagram Description: Illustrates a hand carefully removing a harness retainer from the vehicle's frame rail.
Step 4
If the truck frame has an aftermarket fifth-wheel hitch, you need to remove the outer plate.
Assembling the Air Spring
Step 5
Install the upper bracket. Attach the upper bracket A (part 1 of the Air spring bag kit list) to the frame with a bolt. Secure it with washers and a nut.
Diagram Description: Shows the upper bracket being attached to the vehicle frame using bolts (part 21), washers (part 36), and a nut (part 26).
NOTE: If the truck frame has an aftermarket fifth-wheel hitch, remove the outer plate before drilling a 1/2" hole. If the truck does not have a fifth-wheel hitch, the bolt and washer can be installed directly in the slot.
Step 6
Install the L-bracket (part 8 of the Air spring bag kit list) to the upper side of the driver side bracket and secure it.
Diagram Description: Shows the L-bracket being attached to the upper bracket assembly using bolts and nuts (parts 8, 33, 22, 30 indicated).
NOTE: One side of the L bracket needs to be in place of the harness clip.
Installing the Upper Bracket
Step 7
Place the assembly on the axle.
Diagram Description: Shows the assembled air spring unit positioned on the vehicle's axle.
Step 1
Install the spacer (part 7 of the Air spring bag kit list) between the frame and the upper bracket. The spacer is passed through the bolt and inserted into the jounce bumper hole. The driver side and the passenger side are the same.
Diagram Description: Shows the spacer being installed between the frame and the upper bracket (part 7 indicated).
Step 2
Push the axle up so that the upper mounting bracket B (part 2 of the Air spring bag kit list) can be bolted to the previous bracket (part 1 of the Air spring bag kit list). Then tighten the nuts.
Diagram Description: Shows the upper mounting bracket B being bolted to bracket 1, with various hardware parts (parts 1, 19, 25, 20, 27, 31, 2 indicated).
Installing the Lower Bracket
Step 1
Adjust the assembly so that the air spring is perpendicular to the bottom and top mounting brackets without twisting. Ensure the lower bracket is seated on the jounce bumper strike plate.
Step 2
Install the lower mounting bracket (part 3 of the Air spring bag kit list) with the U-bolt (part 12 of the Air spring bag kit list) to the leaf spring. Then tighten the bolts with nuts and washers.
Diagram Description: Shows the lower mounting bracket being attached to the leaf spring using U-bolts, nuts, and washers (parts 3, 31, 12, 24 indicated).
Step 3
Install the fastening block (part 4 of the Air spring bag kit list) to the axle. Then tighten the bolts with nuts and washers.
Diagram Description: Shows the fastening block being attached to the axle using bolts, nuts, and washers (parts 13, 4, 24, 31 indicated).
NOTE: Do not pinch the brake line between the carriage bolt and the axle.
Step 4
Make sure the nuts on the lower mounting cups are tight.
Diagram Description: Shows a close-up of the lower mounting cup with nuts being tightened (parts 29, 35, 26, 45 indicated).
Step 5
Install the wire clamp (part 9 of the Air spring bag kit list) to the lower bracket to keep the emergency brake line away from the air spring bag.
Diagram Description: Shows the wire clamp being installed on the lower bracket (parts 38, 31, 9, 31, 24 indicated).
NOTE: The wire clamp is only installed on the driver's side.
Step 6
You may be able to tie the wire harness and ABS line with zip tie, so it doesn't rub against anything.
Installing the Heat Shield
Step 1
Install the heat shield to the exhaust port where it is closest to the passenger's side air spring.
Diagram Description: Shows the heat shield being attached near the exhaust port, close to the air spring.
NOTE: Must slide the air line protective sleeve over the air line near the exhaust port.
Installing the Air Lines
Step 1
Cut the air line appropriately and push the hose into the fitting, then pull back and make sure it's locked in place.
Diagram Description: Shows the air line being connected to a fitting.
Step 2
Install the inflatable valve in a selected location, usually on the license plate at the rear of the vehicle.
Diagram Description: Shows the rear of a truck with the inflatable valve being installed near the license plate (parts 18, 32, 35, 34 indicated).
Check Air Tightness
- Put some air into the air spring bag, then spray a soapy solution on all connections and valves while checking for exiting air bubbles.
