JA-180W Wireless Combined PIR + MW Detector
Introduction
The JA-180W is a component of the JABLOTRON alarm system, designed to detect human body movement inside buildings. It achieves high immunity to false alarms through the combination of PIR and microwave (MW) detection. The detector functions like a standard PIR detector, but the MW part confirms PIR detector activation, sending information to the control panel. It requires installation by a trained technician with a valid certificate from an authorized Jablotron distributor and a control panel equipped with a JA-11xR radio module.
Important Note: Always precisely check the PIR and MW coverage of the protected area during installation.
To conserve battery energy, the PIR sensor enters a battery-save mode 15 minutes after the cover is closed. During this mode, the PIR sensor still detects movement. The first detected movement, confirmed by the MW part, is signaled instantly. For the next 5 minutes, the PIR sensor ignores further movement (sleep mode). After this period, it resumes normal operation until re-triggered.
After setting up, switch DIP switch no. 4 back to the NORM position!
Installation
The detector can be mounted on a wall or in a corner of a room. Ensure there are no obstacles blocking the detector's "view" of the protected area. Keep the detector away from metal objects that could interfere with radio communication and the MW field.
1 – DIP-switch; 2 – MW part connector; 3 – PCB tab; 4 - tamper-switch; 5 – PIR sensor; 6 - front cover tab; 7 – MW sensitivity setting; 8 – MW detector
- Open the detector cover by pressing the tab (6). Avoid touching the internal PIR element (5) as it can be damaged.
- Remove the PCB, which is held by a PCB tab (3). Leave the MW connector (2) of the MW part attached.
- Punch screw holes through the rear plastic cover. Screw the rear cover to the wall. Ensure at least one screw penetrates the tamper-sensitive section.
- Reinsert the PCB until the tab (3) clicks. Insert the battery (mind the correct polarity) and follow the instructions below. After installing a low battery, the LED will be lit for 1 minute.
- Close the detector cover until the tab (6) clicks. To comply with EN 50131-2-4, the tab (6) must be secured with the supplied screw.
Enrolment to the system and settings
Refer to the control panel manual for recommended software or application for system enrollment and settings.
Setting DIP switch
- Switch no. 1: DEL / INS: The position of this DIP switch does not affect the reaction, as it is set by the recommended software.
- Switch no. 2: PIR NORM / HIGH: Selects immunity to false alarms. The OFF (NORM) position offers very good immunity with fast sensor reactions. The ON (HIGH) position provides increased immunity with a slower reaction time, suitable for problematic installations.
- Switch no. 3: MW NORM / HIGH: Sets the time period after PIR detection during which the MW detection is active. OFF is 1 second, ON is 2 seconds. The ON position may reduce battery life if the detector is activated frequently.
- Switch no. 4: MW NORM / TEST: The OFF position is for the standard function. MW detection is triggered by the PIR detection part for one or two seconds (according to switch no. 3). The ON position (TEST) enables continuous MW detection for testing purposes (walk test).
Testing the detector
Fifteen minutes after closing the detector cover, the LED indicators will show detector activation. A short flash of the red LED indicates PIR detection, and a long flash (2 seconds) indicates MW confirmation of movement.
The MW detector's reaction span is from 1 m to 15 m. In some cases, it can detect movement outside the monitored room if obstacles are not metal (e.g., thin walls, doors, glass, flowing water in plastic pipes). For proper functioning, the MW detection field must match the PIR detection area. For setup, switch the fourth DIP switch to the TEST position. The RF range of the MW part is adjustable via the trimmer (7). MW activation is indicated by a red LED. Detection characteristics can vary based on the installation environment, particularly due to metal objects causing reflections or shielding the MW signal.
