6.2 Cleaning and Disinfection
6.2.1 General Description/Terms
Providing breast milk is one of the best things you can do for your baby's health and development. Pumping milk is a way to ensure your baby receives breast milk. Keeping the pump clean is crucial. Bacteria grow quickly in breast milk and milk residue that sticks to the pump parts. Following these steps can prevent contamination and protect your baby from infection. If your baby was born prematurely or has other health challenges, healthcare professionals may have additional recommendations for safe breast milk pumping.
1) BEFORE EACH USE
- Inspect and assemble a clean pump set.
- Clean the pump motor with disinfectant wipes.
2) AFTER EACH USE
Store milk safely: Use breast milk storage bags or clean, food-grade containers to store excess breast milk. Ensure containers are made of glass or plastic and have tight-fitting lids. Label them with the date and time and refrigerate immediately, or store in a cooler bag with ice packs.
Clean the pump area: Clean the pump motor with disinfectant wipes.
3) Parts that need cleaning and sterilization
Clean and sterilize all parts that come into contact with the breast and breast milk before first use and after each use.
- Parts that come into contact with milk: parts of the milk collection set including the double-sealed breast flange, connector, membrane, valve, and milk collector.
- Parts that only come into contact with the skin of the breast: Double-sealed breast flange.
4) Before cleaning/disinfection:
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

3. Start Pumping
Do not let the pump slide out of place in your bra; follow the step-by-step instructions. Disconnect the charger before use.
A. Turn on the pump
Long press the On/Off/Pause button for two seconds to turn on the pump.
- When using the pump for the first time, Mixed Mode is the default mode.
- The default suction level is Level 1 (the LED shows suction level 1).
B. Choose Mode
Modes: Stimulation, Let-down, and Mixed Modes. When you first start using the pump, the default setting is suction level 1 in Mixed Mode. The pump remembers and starts with the last used suction strength and mode the next time you use it. Short press the mode selection button to switch between the three modes.
C. Choose Vacuum Level
The Momcozy pump has 9 vacuum pressure settings for each mode. This gives you control over what feels comfortable and what works most effectively in all modes. When you feel the vacuum pressure on your nipple, you can use the Increase/Decrease buttons to adjust the vacuum pressure and find your preferred setting in all modes. The LED screen turns off after 20 seconds of inactivity. Activate the LED screen again by pressing any button.
Tips: Higher vacuum pressure does not always mean a larger volume of milk. Exposing your nipple to excessive stress can reduce milk production. Always ensure you pump at a comfortable level. If you don't feel suction, check if the pump is assembled correctly.
⚠️ Warning: The Momcozy pump does not support use while charging. Always disconnect the charger and close the charging port before use.
The Momcozy pump must not be used while lying flat, participating in strenuous activities, or performing activities with a risk of injury.
Using the breast pump should not cause pain. Do not try to express milk with a vacuum setting that is too high or uncomfortable. If you experience excessive pain during pumping, stop pumping, break the seal around the nipple, and end the session.
4. Pause / Start Pump
To pause while pumping, briefly press the On/Off/Pause button. The mode indicator will blink. Press any button to resume the pumping session.
5. Turn off Pump
Long press the On/Off/Pause button for two seconds to turn off the pump. Additionally, the pump will automatically turn off after 30 minutes of pumping. Note: Pause/start pump, mode, and vacuum level will not reset the pumping time.
Note: A typical pumping session lasts about 10-15 minutes per breast, but you should only pump for as long as it is comfortable and productive.
6. Remove Pump
Use a finger to break the seal between the breast flange and breast tissue. Lean forward slightly to remove the pump from your breast after the pumping session. Keep the flange opening upwards to prevent milk from spilling.
Figure 31: Illustrates removing the pump.
Users are advised to stop the pumping session when the milk level in the milk collector reaches 120 ml to prevent overflow. After finishing milk collection, pour the milk into other milk collectors with lids or storage bags promptly. Screw the lid tightly onto the milk collector and store the milk.
⚠️ Warning: The milk collectors included are intended for collecting milk during pumping. Use a different milk collector with a lid if you need to feed the baby or store breast milk.
6.4 Milk Storage
6.4.1 Correct Milk Storage
⚠️ Warning: Immediately refrigerate or freeze the milk, or store at a temperature of 16°C - 25°C (60°F - 77°F) for 2-4 hours before feeding your baby.
Following recommended storage and preparation techniques can maintain the safety and quality of breast milk for the baby's health. These are general guidelines for storing human milk at different temperatures. Various factors affect how long human milk can be stored safely, including milk volume, room temperature when the milk was pumped, temperature fluctuations in the refrigerator and freezer, and environmental hygiene.
Store Breast Milk After Pumping:
- Refrigerate the milk immediately after it has been pumped, if possible. You can place it in the refrigerator, a cooler container, or an insulated cooler bag, or freeze it in small portions (2 to 4 ounces/0.5-1 dl) for later use.
- Use breast milk storage bags or clean, food-grade containers to store excess breast milk. Ensure the containers are made of glass or plastic and have tight-fitting lids.
- Avoid bottles with the recycling symbol 7, which indicates the container may be made of plastic containing BPA.
- Remove air before sealing.
- Lay the bags flat in the freezer. To prevent the bags from sticking together, separate them with paper towels.
- Never store breast milk in disposable bottles or bags not intended for breast milk storage.
- Gently swirl the container to mix the fatty part of the breast milk that may accumulate at the top with the rest of the breast milk. Do not shake the milk, as this can break down some of the milk's valuable components.
- Freshly expressed or pumped milk can be stored:
Type of Breast Milk | Countertop 25°C (77°F) or cooler (room temperature) | Refrigerator 4°C (40°F) | Freezer -5°C (23°F) or colder |
---|---|---|---|
Newly expressed or pumped | Up to 2-4 hours | Up to 24 hours | Up to 3 months |
Thawed, previously frozen | Use within two hours after baby has nursed |
These guidelines apply only to full-term babies and may vary for premature or sick babies. Check with your healthcare provider.
Storage Tips:
- Clearly label the storage container with the date the milk was pumped. Include the baby's name if you are providing the milk to healthcare personnel.
- Do not store breast milk in the refrigerator or freezer door. This protects the milk from temperature changes when the door is opened and closed.
- Freeze pumped breast milk immediately if you do not think you will use it within four days. This protects the quality of the breast milk.
- When freezing breast milk:
- Store small amounts to avoid wasting milk that may not be used. Store 2 to 4 ounces (0.5-1 dl) in each container, or the amount offered at a meal.
- Breast milk expands when frozen, so leave a little space at the top of the container.
- When traveling, breast milk can be stored in an insulated cooler bag with ice packs for up to 24 hours. Upon arrival, use the milk immediately, refrigerate, or freeze it.
6.4.2 Correct Thawing of Breast Milk
- Always thaw the oldest milk first. Remember first in, first out. Over time, the quality of breast milk may deteriorate.
- There are several ways to thaw breast milk:
- In the refrigerator overnight.
- Placed in a container with warm or lukewarm water.
- Under running lukewarm water.
- Never thaw or heat breast milk in a microwave. Microwaves can destroy the nutritional content of breast milk and can create hot spots that can burn the baby's mouth.
If you thaw breast milk in the refrigerator, it must be used within 24 hours. Start counting the 24 hours when the breast milk is completely thawed, not from when you took it out of the freezer.
When breast milk is at room temperature or warmer, it must be used within two hours.
Never refreeze breast milk once it has been thawed.
7. Storage Conditions
How to Store the Pump
- Short-term storage: Keep the breast pump away from direct sunlight. Store the breast pump and accessories in a safe, clean, and dry place, away from children.
- Long-term storage: First, charge the pump before long-term storage to extend its usage time. Second, store it away from direct sunlight to avoid discoloration. Third, clean and dry the washable parts before storing them.
