Exercise Guidelines
Muscle Building and Weight Gain
Anaerobic exercise focuses on strength training, unlike aerobic exercise which emphasizes endurance. Gradual weight gain can occur as muscle size and strength increase. Your body adapts to stress. Include protein-rich foods like meat, fish, and vegetables to aid muscle recovery.
Muscle Strength and Endurance
To maximize benefits, develop a program that works all major muscle groups equally. To increase strength, increase resistance while maintaining repetitions. To tone, decrease resistance and increase repetitions.
Training Intensity
Adjust intensity based on your fitness level. Reduce load or sets if experiencing soreness. Gradually increase load as fitness improves. Muscle soreness is normal initially; persistent pain may indicate a need to change the program.
Warming Up
Perform 5-10 minutes of light exercise and stretching before strength training to increase circulation and oxygen flow to muscles.
Workout
Be mindful that prolonged muscle soreness is undesirable and may indicate injury.
Cool Down
Perform 5-10 minutes of slow stretching after each workout to help muscles relax.
Hydration
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, especially during exercise, to replace fluids lost through sweat.
Rest Days
Include at least one rest day per week for muscle recovery and to prevent overtraining.
