- Fill the filter basket with ground espresso coffee to the desired level. Pack the coffee lightly and clear any excess coffee from the rim of the filter holder.
- Insert the filter holder into the brewing head and turn it firmly to the right until it locks into place. Ensure the arrow on the filter holder is as far right as possible within the lock range.
- Place the glass carafe (i) with its lid onto the warming plate, ensuring the opening points towards the pouring spout.
- Ensure the overflow grid (j) is in place.
- To make espresso directly into cups, clip the cup adapter (g) onto the filter holder and place cups under the spouts.
- Turn the selector switch (b) to the espresso position "P". The on/off indicator light will illuminate.
- After approximately 2 minutes, the water will reach the proper temperature and pass through the coffee, producing espresso in the carafe or cups.
- Once brewing stops, turn the machine off by moving the switch to the "0" position.
- For Cappuccino:
- Prepare espresso as described above.
- Fill a small stainless steel pitcher 1/3 to 1/2 full with fresh, cold milk.
- To froth milk, insert the steam nozzle with the Perfect Froth attachment (d) halfway into the milk.
- Turn the selector switch (b) to the "C" (cappuccino/steam) position. Froth the milk for approximately 45-60 seconds, or until desired froth is achieved. Avoid bringing the milk to a boil.
- Set the frothed milk aside to settle.
- Turn the selector switch back to the "0" position to finish making the espresso.
- Pour the espresso into a cup (at least 5 ounces capacity), add the steamed milk, and spoon on the frothed milk. The proportion is typically 1 part espresso to 2 parts milk plus froth.
- Steam Only: Fill the glass carafe with water up to the "W" mark for approximately one minute of steaming. Turn the selector switch to "C" and then back to "0" after use.
Operation: Coffee
These steps guide the operation of the coffee brewing function:
- Setting the Digital Clock:
- Plug in the machine and ensure it is turned "off".
- A row of flickering figures in the LED display indicates it's time to set the clock.
- Press and hold the "h" (hour) button to advance the hour, then press and hold the "m" (minute) button to set the minutes. The display will return to the regular time after a few seconds.
- AM/PM indicators are shown in the LED display.
- Preparing Coffee:
- Rinse the coffee maker once or twice with water only, without ground coffee, to remove any dust.
- Ensure the water chamber is empty.
- Position the lid of the glass carafe correctly, ensuring front hooks are inside and the rectangular part engages with the handle.
- Swing out the swivel filter holder (C).
- Insert a paper filter (KRUPS size 4 recommended), ensuring the seam points towards the filter holder handle. Conform the filter to the holder's contours. A "Gold Tone" filter is available as an accessory.
- Add ground coffee to the filter holder. One level KRUPS measuring spoon per cup is suggested. Avoid powder-like consistency.
- Close the swivel filter holder firmly until it is completely closed. Ensure the "Stop'N Serve" trigger mechanism is properly engaged.
- Fill the water chamber with the desired quantity of fresh, cold water. Note that the final coffee volume will be slightly less than the water added due to absorption by the grounds.
- Place the glass carafe with lid in position on the warming plate.
- Turn on the machine using the "On/Off" button. The indicator light will illuminate, signaling the start of the brewing process.
- Auto Shut Off and Warm Keeping:
- The machine automatically shuts off 2 hours after brewing begins to preserve coffee flavor and save energy.
- The coffee is kept warm as long as the red indicator light above the "On/Off" button is illuminated. Pressing "On/Off" again can extend the warm-keeping time.
- Setting "Wake-Up" Time:
- After setting the digital clock, press the "Program" button (a green light will appear).
- Immediately press "h" (hour) and "m" (minute) buttons to set the desired wake-up time.
- The "Wake-Up" time is stored in memory. Pressing "Program" again displays the set time.
- To prepare "Wake-Up" coffee, set the desired time, add ground coffee, fill the water chamber, place the carafe, and press the "Auto" button (a red light will illuminate).
- When the programmed time arrives, the auto light turns off, and the "On/Off" light illuminates, indicating brewing has begun. Coffee will be kept warm for two hours.
- Stop'N Serve Feature:
- This feature allows the removal of the glass carafe during brewing for about 20 seconds without dripping.
- Replacing the carafe resumes the brewing process.
- If dripping occurs, check the filter holder's black seal or ensure the correct amount of coffee is used.
- Power Failure Back-up:
- An electronic device stores functions for up to 6 seconds during power interruptions. The display and lights will go out and return to normal when power is restored.
- If power failure exceeds 6 seconds, the machine will switch off completely. Clock time and programmed times will flash upon power return, requiring a reset of the clock and all functions.
Cleaning
Always unplug the appliance before cleaning. Allow it to cool down.
- Filter holder, filter basket, carafe, carafe lid, and overflow grid: These parts can be washed in warm, soapy water or placed in the upper rack of a dishwasher, away from the heating element. Never use scouring agents.
- Appliance Body: Wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth. Never immerse the appliance in water or any other liquid.
- Water Chamber: Rinse periodically with cold water. Avoid using a cloth, as it may leave deposits.
- Steam Nozzle: Clean the steam nozzle immediately after each use. If clogged, unscrew the tip, clean with a sewing needle, and rinse. Wipe the nozzle tip with a wet cloth and briefly run steam through it to flush any residue.
- Perfect Froth Attachment: For thorough cleaning, remove part C. Rinse all parts in warm water. If the small suction opening in part A is clogged, use a straight pin or paper clip to clear it.
- Drip Tray: The overflow grid can be cleaned by removing it.
CAUTION: DO NOT try to open or disassemble the main body of the machine.
Decalcifying the Espresso Machine
Regular decalcifying is necessary, depending on water hardness and usage frequency.
Indications for Decalcifying:
- Increased noise during boiling.
- Longer preparation time.
Decalcifying Frequency:
- With soft water: once a year.
- With medium hard water: every quarter year.
- With hard water: once a month.
If unsure about water hardness, contact your local water department.
Decalcifying Procedure:
- For ecological and health reasons, use citric acid (available from KRUPS Consumer Service or drugstores).
- Dissolve 2 tablespoonfuls of citric acid in 10 fluid ounces of lukewarm water and pour into the boiler container.
- Place a receptacle under the brewing head and another under the steam nozzle. Do not use the filter holder during decalcification.
- Turn the selector switch to the steam position "C" and let steam run for approximately 30 seconds.
- Turn the selector switch to the espresso position "P" and allow the descaling solution to pass through the brewing head.
- After each cycle, switch off the appliance and allow it to cool down. Repeat steps 4-6 once more.
- Following this, run 2 boiler containerfuls of clear water through the system. Switch off the appliance and allow it to cool down.
- Reinsert the brewing sieve and attach the "Perfect Froth" onto the steam nozzle.
