Woofer (PS-S83WT)

Product Features

The speakers feature a Powder Coated Aluminum Grille, a Tuning Port, a Chambered Tweeter (excluding PS-S83WT), a High Excursion Woofer, a Transformer Tap and Bypass Selector, and a Euroblock Connector with Loop Through. The enclosure includes a Rotation Lock, a Paintable Shell (white only), a FastMount Bracket, and Cable Pass-Through.

Product Preparation

Amplifier Selection

Ensure the amplifier's total tap settings do not exceed 80% of its rated output. Calculate usable power by multiplying the rated output by 0.8.

Wire Selection

70V/100V System

Use 18-gauge, 2-conductor stranded wire. For a 100-watt load, 18-gauge wire is suitable up to 700 feet. Using 16-gauge wire extends this to approximately 1100 feet.

8 Ohm System

Total wire resistance should be less than 10% of the speaker impedance (0.8 ohms for 8-ohm speakers) to maintain sound quality.

Refer to the chart for appropriate wire gauge based on distance and resistance:

Wire Resistance in Ohms vs. Length of Cable Run
Distance in Feet 50′ 100′ 150′ 200′ 250′ 300′
20 Gauge .86 1.73 2.59 3.45 4.32 5.18
18 Gauge .65 1.30 1.94 2.59 3.24 3.89
16 Gauge .43 .85 1.28 1.71 2.14 2.56
14 Gauge .27 .54 .81 1.08 1.35 1.62
12 Gauge .17 .34 .51 .68 .85 1.02

Speaker Placement

Sonance Professional Series speakers offer smooth off-axis response. The FastMount system allows for versatile placement.

Wall/Ceiling Mounting

Ensure the bracket is securely mounted to a structurally sound surface capable of supporting the speaker's weight and vibration. Use four screw points with #14 to #20 diameter x 2" length screws, or M6 to M8 diameter x 50mm length screws. For drywall or plasterboard, mount into a joist or stud. For brick or concrete, use wall plugs or anchors.

Pole Mounting

To mount on a pole, use 2 x U-bolts and nuts to clamp around the pole and bolt through the 4 holes on the back of the FastMount bracket. Spring washers or thread lock are recommended to prevent loosening due to vibration.

Pivoting the Speakers

  1. Unlock the slide locks by moving them towards the rear of the speaker.
  2. Rotate the speakers to the desired position.
  3. Lock the slide locks by moving them towards the front of the speaker.

Painting the Grilles & Speaker Shell

Sonance Surface Mount speakers have a paintable polypropylene enclosure. Use a weather-resistant outdoor paint and a spray gun for best results.

  1. Remove grilles if already installed.
  2. Protect speaker driver units by using cardboard cutouts as "paint plugs" in the speaker baffles.
  3. Paint speakers according to the paint manufacturer's instructions. Remove paint plugs once dry.
  4. Paint grilles separately with very thin paint (5:1 ratio), avoiding blockage of grille holes.

Installing the Speakers

For optimal performance, place left and right speakers at ear level, 6-10 feet apart, facing the listeners. If mounting above or below ear level, pivot speakers to direct sound.

  1. Remove speakers from mounting brackets by pulling tabs on the front panels away from each other.
  2. Figure 6: Pull Tabs Away From Each Other and Slide Speaker Off Bracket

  3. Run speaker wires from the amplifier to the speaker locations through the mounting brackets. Ensure enough wire is left for connection.
  4. Attach the mounting bracket to the surface using appropriate hardware.
  5. Figure 7: Attach Bracket

  6. For pole mounting, attach the bracket using 2.5" U-bolts.
  7. Figure 8: Attaching the Bracket to a Pole

  8. Feed speaker wires through the wire entry grommets on the speaker backs, through wire tunnels, and out the front openings. The grommet creates a water-resistant seal. Ensure sufficient slack for pivoting.

  10. Slide speakers onto brackets until locks snap into place. Pull enough wire through the front for terminal connection.

  12. Connect wires from the amplifier to the input connector.
  13. Figure 11: Input Connector

  14. Strip approximately .1875" (5mm) of insulation from each wire. Insert wires into the correct square openings on the connector and tighten screws with a flathead screwdriver.

  16. Determine the correct wattage setting for each speaker and set the transformer tap selector accordingly.
