Product Description

Sonance, a pioneer in architectural audio, presents its Professional Series loudspeakers, setting new standards in sound quality and aesthetics for commercial environments. The series includes In-Ceiling, Pendant, and Surface Mount speakers designed for full-range fidelity, low distortion, wide dispersion, and smooth power response, ensuring consistent voicing across different models for seamless integration. The In-Ceiling speakers feature a bezel-less, paintable grille secured by magnets, simplifying installation and visual integration. An optional Square Grille Adapter is available to match square downlights and HVAC grilles. These speakers are equipped with sealed metal enclosures, integrated cable and conduit clamping, seismic attachment, and a connector cover, making them suitable for commercial installations requiring UL 1480 and UL 2043 compliance. They are available in 4", 6.5", and 8" 2-Way configurations, and an 8" Woofer model, all shipped with a white grille. Optional black grilles and square adapters are also offered.

Product Preparation

Amplifier Selection

When selecting an amplifier, consider the maximum number of speakers and the output level of each speaker. The sum of the tap settings should not exceed 80% of the amplifier's rated output. For example, five speakers set at 15 watts each (75 watts total load) require an amplifier with at least 93.75 watts (75 / 0.8). To determine usable amplifier power, multiply the rated output by 0.8.

Wire Selection

70V/100V System Wire Gauge

For commercial 70V systems, 18-gauge, 2-conductor stranded wire is commonly used. With a 100-watt load, 18-gauge wire is suitable for runs up to 700 feet. Doubling the load halves the distance, while halving the load doubles the acceptable wire length. Using 16-gauge wire extends the run length by approximately 35% (e.g., 1100 feet for a 100-watt load).

8 Ohm System Wire Gauge

For 8-ohm systems, total wire resistance should be less than 10% of the speaker impedance (i.e., no more than 0.8 ohms). Excessive wire resistance can negatively impact sound quality, reducing dynamics and high frequencies, and wasting amplifier power. Refer to the Wire Resistance table for guidance.

Speaker Placement

Sonance Professional Series speakers offer predictable off-axis response. The Speaker Spacing chart provides guidance on optimal speaker separation based on ceiling height and listener position (standing or seated), assuming a +/- 45-degree coverage angle and listener ear heights of 62" (standing) and 40" (seated).

Grille Painting

Before You Begin: Only the grilles require painting, not the speakers themselves. Mask the front flange of the speaker before painting the wall or ceiling.

Preparing The Grilles For Painting: Carefully remove the scrim cloth from the underside of the grille. Use a heat gun or hair dryer to soften the glue holding the scrim cloth, then gently remove it. The scrim cloth will need to be replaced after painting. Avoid deforming the cloth. Remove any adhesive residue from the back of the grille.

Painting The Grilles:

1. Prime the grille with a metal primer/bonder spray. Follow manufacturer instructions.
2. Use water-based latex paint. Thin paint with a 1:1 ratio of paint-to-thinner and strain to remove lumps. Oil-based paint is recommended for outdoor installations due to increased durability.
3. Apply paint using a small touch-up or cap-spray gun with a #3 tip. Set the nozzle to a medium-to-wide fan and the pressure regulator to 60psi. Spray lightly in 3 quick strokes from approximately 10 inches away. Rotate the grille 90° and repeat until all sides are evenly painted.
4. While the paint is wet, check for excess paint under the grille frame or in perforations. Use compressed air to clear any filled perforations. If paint fills perforations after drying, use a straight pin or sewing needle to carefully remove it.
5. Once dry, replace the scrim cloth and mount the grille onto the speaker.

Installation

Standard Installation

1. Step 1: Cut a hole in the drywall using the provided cutout template. (Refer to page 7 for drop-ceiling instructions.)
2. Step 2: Connect speaker wires to the Euroblock connector. Strip approximately 5mm of insulation from each wire. Insert wires into the correct openings (+/-) and tighten the screws with a small flat-head screwdriver.
3. Step 3: Plug the Euroblock connector into the back of the speaker. Route wires through the strain relief fitting and tighten screws to secure them, avoiding over-tightening.

Speakers can be connected in parallel or via the loop-through method. Diagrams illustrate both connection types.

4. Step 4: Ensure Roto-Lock Clamps are in the fully clockwise position. Insert the speaker into the ceiling cutout. Note: Maximum clamp thickness is 1.732" (44mm); unscrew and reverse Roto-Lock feet for maximum thickness.
5. Step 5: Tighten the four screws on the front baffle. The Roto-Lock Clamps will automatically rotate and clamp the speaker. Stop when resistance is felt, indicating successful clamping. The flange is designed to flex for minor imperfections.
6. Step 6: Set the transformer tap selector. This can be done now or after the system is fully installed.
7. Step 7: Adjust the pivoting tweeter by applying light pressure to the ring around its edge. Avoid touching the cone itself.
8. Step 8: Install the grille. Magnets on the speaker frame will hold the grille in place. Ensure it makes full contact with the wall/ceiling.

Safety Precaution: Attaching the seismic tab to a support line is recommended for additional safety.

Drop Ceiling Installation

1. Step 1B: For suspended ceilings, use the included C-bracket and tile support rails. Insert them through the cutout and attach the C-bracket to the rails using the supplied screws.
2. Follow steps 2 through 7 of the standard installation instructions after installing the C-bracket and rails.

Warranty

Limited Warranty (U.S. Only): Sonance warrants this product to the original purchaser for five (5) years from the date of original purchase against defects in material and workmanship under normal use. This warranty is non-transferable and does not apply if the product is misused, neglected, improperly installed, modified by unauthorized personnel, or not used according to instructions.

Exclusive Remedy: Sonance will, at its option, repair or replace defective products free of charge within the warranty period, subject to verification and proof of purchase.

Exclusions: This warranty is exclusive and in lieu of all other warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. Sonance is not liable for consequential, incidental, or special damages. Some states may not allow limitations on implied warranties or damages, so these exclusions may not apply.
