Description: A collection of the aFe intake system components, including two conical air filters (Pro-5R or Pro Dry S), a black intake tube with a dual filter housing, various seals, screws, washers, and a restore kit.
Installation Steps
Step 1: Complete Stock Intake
Description: A view of the stock air intake system installed in a BMW engine bay.
Step 2: Disconnect Vacuum Line
Description: A hand is shown disconnecting a vacuum line from the stock air intake assembly.
Step 3: Unclip Air Box
Description: A hand is unclipping the upper half of the stock air box to reveal the air filter.
Step 4: Loosen Battery Cable Mount
Description: A hand is pulling back a rubber mount attached to the battery cable. Pliers ? may be necessary. This action allows a stock clamp to be loosened. (This is preparatory for Step 5B.)
Step 5: Loosen Intake Tube Clamps
Description: A close-up view of two hose clamps on the stock intake tube. Label A points to the clamp closest to the radiator. Label B points to the clamp closest to the firewall. Both clamps should be loosened using a 1/4" nut driver, but left in position.
Step 6: Remove Stock Air Box
Description: A hand is shown removing the entire stock air box assembly from the engine bay.
Step 7: Remove Grommets
Description: A hand is detaching three rubber grommets from the removed stock air box. These grommets will be used in Step 9.
Step 8: Attach Trim Seals
Description: Two parts of the new intake housing are shown. Label A indicates attaching a 7/16" trim seal to the top edge of the housing. Label B indicates attaching a rubber edge trim seal to the ram air cut-out on the housing.
Step 9: Install Grommets on New Housing
Description: The new intake housing is shown with three rubber grommets being installed into designated positions.
Step 10: Install New Intake Tube
Description: The new intake tube is being positioned into the engine bay, pulled towards the driver's side fender. Clamps should not be tightened yet.
Step 11: Install New Housing
Description: The new intake housing is being placed into its factory position in the engine bay.
Step 12: Seat Housing and Align Insert
Description: A hand is pressing down on the new housing to ensure the rubber grommets seat properly. A threaded insert on the housing is being aligned with a hole.
Step 13: Secure Component and Tighten Clamps
Description: A screw, wavy washer, and flat washer are being installed using a 10mm socket or wrench to secure a component. Clamps on the intake tube are being tightened with a 1/4" nut driver.
Step 14: Install Air Filters and Connect Vacuum Line
Description: Two blue aFe air filters are being installed into the intake tube. A hand is tightening them with a 5/16" nut driver, and a vacuum line is being reconnected.
Step 15: Installation Complete
Description: The completed aFe intake system is installed in the BMW engine bay, showing the two blue air filters connected to the intake tube and housing.
Filter Maintenance Note
Filter Cleaning and Re-oiling: When cleaning your aFe filter, be sure to use only aFe's "Restore Kit" (aFe P/N: 90-50001 blue oil aerosol, aFe P/N: 90-50501 blue squeeze bottle oil, aFe P/N: 90-59999 Pro Dry S™ cleaner only.)
Filter Replacement: Pro-5R™ PN: 24-90054 (black w/blue media). Pro Dry S™ P/N: 21-90054 (black w/white media) or 72-35008 Pro-GUARD 7™ media, (black w/gold media).
Pre-filters: 28-10011 yellow, 28-10012 red, 0013 black, and 28-10014 blue.
