Precautions

Please read the following precautions carefully before operating the instrument. Keep this manual in a safe and easily accessible place for future reference.

Safety Precautions

To prevent serious injury or death from electric shock, short circuits, damage, fire, or other hazards, always observe the following basic precautions. These include, but are not limited to, the following:

Power/AC Adaptor

  • Do not place the power cord near heaters or heating appliances. Do not excessively bend, damage, or place heavy objects on the power cord.
  • Only use the rated voltage specified for this instrument. The required voltage is indicated on the instrument's rating plate.
  • Only use the specified adaptor (page 20). Using an incorrect adaptor may damage the instrument or cause it to overheat.
  • Periodically inspect the power plug and remove any accumulated dirt or dust.
  • Do not open the instrument. It contains no user-serviceable parts. Do not open the instrument or attempt to disassemble or modify its internal parts. If any abnormality occurs, stop use immediately and have the instrument inspected by qualified Yamaha service personnel.
  • Do not expose the instrument to rain or use it near water or in damp environments. Do not place containers with liquids (such as vases, bottles, or glasses) on the instrument, as this may cause liquid to enter any openings. If liquid seeps into the instrument, unplug the AC power cord immediately and have the instrument inspected by qualified Yamaha service personnel.
  • Do not plug or unplug the power cord with wet hands.
  • Do not place burning objects, such as candles, on the instrument. Burning objects may tip over and cause a fire.
  • If you notice any of the following, immediately turn off the power switch, unplug the AC power cord, and have the instrument serviced by qualified Yamaha service personnel:
    • The power cord or plug is frayed or damaged.
    • An unusual smell or smoke is emitted.
    • An object has fallen into the instrument.
    • The sound suddenly cuts out during use.

Placement

  • Do not place the instrument in unstable locations where it could accidentally tip over.
  • Before moving the instrument, unplug all connected cables to prevent damage to the cables or injury to yourself or others.
  • When setting up the product, ensure that the AC power outlet you intend to use is easily accessible. If a problem or malfunction occurs, immediately turn off the power switch and unplug the AC power cord from the outlet. A small amount of current flows to the product even when the power switch is turned off. Always unplug the AC power cord from the AC power outlet when not using the instrument for extended periods.
  • Only use the specified stand. When installing stands or brackets, use only the provided screws. Failure to do so may damage internal components or cause the instrument to fall.

Connections

  • Before connecting the instrument to other electronic devices, turn off the power switches of all devices. Turn down all volume controls to their minimum levels before turning the power switches on or off.
  • Set all volume controls to their minimum levels, then gradually increase the volume while playing the instrument to achieve the desired listening level.

Handling Precautions

  • Do not insert fingers or hands into any gaps on the instrument.
  • Do not insert paper, metal, or other objects into any gaps on the panel or keyboard. Doing so may cause personal injury or damage to the equipment or property, or cause operational malfunctions.
  • Do not lean on the instrument or place heavy objects on it. Do not apply excessive force when operating buttons, switches, or jacks.
  • Do not use the instrument or headphones at high volume levels for extended periods, as this may cause permanent hearing damage. If you experience any hearing loss or ringing in the ears, consult a doctor.

Yamaha is not responsible for any damage, data loss, or other loss caused by improper use or unauthorized modification of the instrument.

  • Always turn off the instrument when not in use.
  • A small amount of current flows to the instrument even when the [Power] (Standby/On) switch is in the standby position (power indicator is off). Always unplug the AC power cord from the wall AC outlet when not using the instrument for extended periods.

Notes

  • Do not connect the instrument to a multi-outlet power strip. This may degrade sound quality or cause the outlet to overheat.
  • When unplugging the instrument or the power cord from the power outlet, always grasp the plug itself, not the power cord. Pulling the power cord directly may cause damage.
  • Unplug the power cord from the outlet during thunderstorms or when not using the instrument for extended periods.

Precautions for Use and Maintenance

  • Do not use this instrument near televisions, radios, stereo equipment, mobile phones, or other electronic devices. This may cause noise in the instrument itself, as well as in the nearby television or radio.
  • To prevent deformation of the control panel, damage to internal components, or unstable operation, do not place the instrument in environments with excessive dust, vibration, extreme cold or heat (such as direct sunlight, near a heater, or in a car exposed to the sun). (Verified operating temperature range: 5°-40°C.)
  • Do not place vinyl, plastic, or rubber objects on the instrument, as this may cause discoloration of the panel or keyboard.
  • When cleaning the instrument, use a soft, dry cloth or a slightly damp cloth. Do not use paint thinner, solvents, cleaning fluids, or cloths soaked in chemicals.

Saving Data

Certain types of data (page 19) are stored in memory and retained even when the power is turned off. However, data may be lost due to malfunctions or improper operation. Save important data to your computer. For detailed instructions, refer to "Computer-Related Operations" (page 4).

Connecting External Audio Devices

To amplify the instrument's sound, connect a stereo system to the AUX OUT [L/L+R]/[R] jacks using the headphone jack (standard). Use the [MASTER VOLUME] slider to adjust the output volume for these jacks.

Notes

  • When outputting the instrument's sound to external devices, turn on the instrument's power first, then turn on the power of the external devices. When turning off the power, do so in the reverse order.
  • Use audio cables and adapter plugs that are not impedance-matched.
  • If connecting to non-stereo devices, use only one [L/L+R] jack.

Using Pedals

The [SUSTAIN] jack is used to connect the included pedal, which functions the same as the sustain pedal on an acoustic piano. You can also connect an optional FC3 foot pedal or FC4/FC5 pedals to this jack. With the FC3 connected, you can use the half-pedal function.

Sustain Pedal

Pressing this pedal sustains the notes. Releasing the pedal stops the sustain immediately. The "half-pedal" function of this pedal creates a half-sustain effect based on the depth to which the pedal is pressed.

Half-Pedal Function (for FC3 and LP-5A/LP-5AWH)

To sustain the piano sound and produce a clearer, less muddy tone (especially in the bass register), lift your foot to the halfway position on the pedal.

Notes

  • Do not press the pedal while the power switch is on. Doing so may change the pedal's recognition polarity, causing the pedal to operate in reverse.
  • Always turn off the power switch before connecting or disconnecting pedals or foot switches.

Using the Optional Pedal Unit

The [PEDAL UNIT] jack is used to connect the optional LP-5A/LP-5AWH pedal unit. When connecting the pedal unit, be sure to install the instrument on an optional keyboard stand (L-85/L-85S/L-85WH).

Sustain Echo

This function simulates the sustain effect produced when the damper pedal of a grand piano is pressed.

To turn Sustain Echo On/Off:

Press and hold the [DEMO/SONG] and [METRONOME/RHYTHM] buttons, then press the G4 key (On; default setting) or the G#4 key (Off).

Sustain (Right) Pedal

Pressing this pedal sustains the notes. Releasing the pedal stops the sustain immediately. The "half-pedal" function of this pedal creates a half-sustain effect based on the depth to which the pedal is pressed.

Sostenuto (Middle) Pedal

If you press this pedal while playing a note or chord, and then release the note while holding the pedal down, those notes will sustain as long as the pedal is pressed (similar to the sustain pedal), but any subsequent notes played will not sustain. For example, you can sustain a chord while playing other notes "staccato".

Soft (Left) Pedal

Pressing this pedal reduces the volume of the notes being played and slightly alters their tone. Pressing the soft pedal does not affect notes that have already been played.

Notes

  • When the JAZZ ORGAN or ROCK ORGAN voice is selected, the left pedal switches the speed of the rotary speaker.

Recording Your Performance

You can record your keyboard performance as a user song in SMF format. You can record separately for two parts (L and R).

Quick Recording

  1. Set the voice and metronome/rhythm before recording.

Since some settings cannot be changed after entering recording mode, set them according to your playing preferences. For example, if you want to record with a Pianist Style, turn on [PIANIST STYLE].

  1. Press the [REC] button to enter recording standby mode.

The [REC] indicator light will flash according to the current tempo. Set the tempo as needed (page 15).

Notes

  • You cannot enter recording mode while a song is playing.
  • You can use the metronome/rhythm during recording, but the metronome/rhythm sound will not be recorded. When recording a Pianist Style performance, the metronome/rhythm cannot be played during recording.
  1. Press the [REC] button or the [PLAY] button to start recording.

The [REC] indicator light will turn on, and the [PLAY] indicator light will flash according to the current tempo.

Play the keyboard and record your performance.

Recording Parts Separately

You can record your performance separately into the L part (left-hand part) and the R part (right-hand part).

Notes

  • If you select a part that already contains data, the recording operation will overwrite the previously recorded data.

Notes

  • If you want to record your performance using Pianist Style, Split, or Duet Mode, use the Quick Recording method (see the previous section). The instructions below do not apply to these functions.
  1. Set the voice and metronome/rhythm before recording.
  2. While holding down [REC], press [R] or [L] to enter recording standby mode for the desired part.

Recording the Right Part [R]:

  1. Press the [REC] button or the [PLAY] button to stop recording.

The [REC] and [PLAY] indicator lights will flash, indicating that recording data is being stored. After storage is complete, the [REC] indicator light will turn off.

Notes

  • Do not turn off the power while recording data is being stored (indicator lights flashing). Doing so will result in the loss of all recorded data.
  1. If necessary, repeat steps 1-4 to record the other part.
  2. If you want to listen to the recorded song, press [PLAY] to start playback.

Press [PLAY] again to stop playback.

Editing Recorded Songs

  2. While holding down [REC], press the desired part button to enter recording standby mode.

If you want to change parameters shared by both parts, select either part.

Notes

  1. Press [REC] again to change the initial settings and exit recording standby mode.

Transferring SMF Files Between Computer and Instrument

Deleting Songs

  1. Press the [REC] button to enter recording standby mode.

The [REC] indicator light will flash.

  1. While holding down [PLAY], press [REC] so that both indicator lights flash.

To exit this state, press any other button such as [DEMO/SONG].

  1. Press [PLAY], [PLAY], [L], or [R] to delete the entire song data.

After the operation is complete, both indicator lights will turn off.

Deleting a Specific Part:

  1. While holding down [REC], press [L] or [R] to enter recording standby mode.
  2. Press [PLAY] to start recording without playing the keyboard.
  3. Press the [REC] or [PLAY] button to stop recording.

All data recorded in the selected part will be deleted, and the indicator light will turn off.

Song Playback and Practice

In addition to the demo songs (page 14), you can turn on or off the [L] and [R] parts separately for any other song. For example, you can turn off [R] and practice the [R] part while playing the [L] part, and vice versa.

  1. Start playback of the desired song.

To start playback of a user song, press [PLAY]. To start playback of a preset song, press and hold [DEMO/SONG] while pressing any key from C2 to C#6. Refer to "Quick Operation Guide" (page 22) for song numbers assigned to each key.

  1. While holding down [PLAY], repeatedly press [L] or [R] to turn the part on/off.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible Cause and Solution
The instrument's power cannot be turned on.The instrument's power plug is not inserted correctly. Firmly insert the recessed plug into the jack on the instrument, and then plug the insertable plug into a suitable AC power outlet (page 7).
The instrument automatically turns off even when no operation is performed. This is normal. This is the function of the Auto Power Off function (page 19).
Noise is heard from the speakers or headphones.Noise may be caused by interference from mobile phones used near the instrument. Turn off your mobile phone or use it away from the instrument.
The overall volume is low or no sound is heard. The master volume is set too low; use the [MASTER VOLUME] slider to adjust the volume to an appropriate level (page 7). Confirm that no headphones are plugged into the [PHONES] jack (page 7).
The pedal does not work.Confirm that Local Control is set to ON. For detailed information, refer to "MIDI Reference (MIDI Reference)" on the website (page 4).
The pedal (for sustain) seems to have the opposite effect. For example, pressing the pedal cuts off the sound, and releasing it sustains the sound. The pedal's polarity is reversed, causing the pedal to be pressed when the power is turned on. Turn off the power, then turn it on again to reset the function. Do not press the pedal while the power switch is on.
