Setting Up

Power Requirements

Connect the AC adaptor plugs in the following order:

1. DC IN jack on the instrument

2. AC Adaptor

3. AC Outlet

⚠️ Use only the supplied or specified AC adaptor. Using the wrong adaptor can damage the instrument or cause overheating.

⚠️ When using an AC adaptor with a removable plug, keep the plug attached. Using the plug alone can cause electric shock or fire.

⚠️ Never touch the metallic section when attaching the plug. Ensure no dust is present between the adaptor and plug to avoid electric shock, short circuit, or damage.

⚠️ Ensure the AC outlet is easily accessible. If a malfunction occurs, immediately turn off the power and disconnect the plug.

Even when the power switch is off, electricity flows to the product. Unplug the power cord from the wall AC outlet if not using the product for a long time.

Auto Power Off Function

To prevent unnecessary power consumption, this function automatically turns the power off if no buttons or keys are operated for approximately 15 minutes. For settings, see page 10.

Disabling Auto Power Off (simple method)

While holding down the lowest key (A-1), press the [ ] (Standby/On) switch. The power turns on with the Auto Power Off function disabled.

Turning the Power On/Off

  1. Set the volume to the minimum.
  2. Press the [ ] (Standby/On) switch to turn on the power. The power lamp will illuminate.

Adjust the volume level using the [VOLUME] slider. To turn off the power, press the [ ] (Standby/On) switch again for a second.

Using a Footswitch or a Foot pedal

The [SUSTAIN] jack connects the included footswitch, which functions like a damper pedal on an acoustic piano. A separately sold foot pedal or footswitch can also be connected.

Ensure power is OFF when connecting or disconnecting the footswitch or pedal.

Do not press the footswitch when turning the power on, as this can reverse its polarity.

Using this instrument with smart device apps

You can use the following apps by connecting the instrument to a smart device.

Smart Pianist

Use the Smart Pianist app to remotely control your digital piano for enhanced convenience and flexibility. For connection and usage information, see the Smart Pianist User Guide:

https://manual.yamaha.com/mi/app/smartpianist/

Rec'n'Share

Record, make videos of, and edit your performances, then share them. To connect, you need a USB cable (Type A - Type B) and a conversion adaptor.

For details about each app, refer to:

https://www.yamaha.com/2/apps/

Connection example: [USB TO HOST] jack (page 8) via USB Cable and USB conversion adaptor.

Listening to Audio playback of the Bluetooth device on this instrument

Connect a Bluetooth-equipped device (smartphone, audio player) to this instrument for audio playback through the instrument (Bluetooth Audio function). Refer to “About Bluetooth®” on page 13 before use.

IMPORTANT: The instrument may automatically turn off after 15 minutes of inactivity due to the Auto Power Off function, even during Bluetooth audio playback. Disable this function if needed (see page 9).

NOTES:

  • This instrument cannot transmit audio data via Bluetooth.
  • Bluetooth headphones or speakers cannot be connected or used.
  • Smart device apps like Smart Pianist cannot be used via Bluetooth Audio.
  • Only one Bluetooth device can be connected at a time (up to 8 devices can be paired). Pairing with a 9th device deletes the oldest pairing data.

Pairing Process:

  1. Hold down the [GRAND PIANO/FUNCTION] button for three seconds or longer to initiate pairing. The instrument's power lamp will flash.
  2. On the Bluetooth-equipped device, turn on Bluetooth and select “P-145BT Audio” or “P-143BT Audio” from the connection list. Pairing is completed when the instrument's power lamp stops flashing (within five minutes).
  3. Play audio data on the Bluetooth device to confirm sound output.

To disconnect, turn off Bluetooth on the device or disconnect the instrument. The last-connected device will reconnect automatically next time if Bluetooth is enabled on the device. To disable auto-connection, delete pairing information from the device.

Troubleshooting Bluetooth Connection:

  • Ensure Bluetooth is active on the device and select the instrument from its connection list.
  • Disconnect the device from any other Bluetooth connections.
  • If already paired with multiple devices, disconnect unintended devices first.
  • If devices emitting 2.4 GHz signals (microwave ovens, wireless LAN) are nearby, move the instrument away from them.

About Bluetooth®

Bluetooth is a wireless communication technology operating within approximately 10 meters (33 ft.) using the 2.4 GHz frequency band. The 2.4 GHz band is shared, and while Bluetooth uses technology to minimize interference, it can still affect communication speed, distance, or cause interruptions. Yamaha does not guarantee all wireless connections.

Backup and Initialization

The following parameters are automatically maintained when the power is turned off:

  • Metronome Volume, Metronome Beat, Touch Sensitivity, Tuning, Auto Power Off, Operation Confirmation Sound, Bluetooth pairing information.

Tempo settings are not backed up.

To initialize the backup parameters:

While holding down the C7 key (highest key), turn the power on to reset data to factory initial settings.

Never turn off the power during initialization.

If the instrument malfunctions, try executing initialization. Bluetooth pairing information is not lost.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible Cause and Solution
The instrument does not turn on.Ensure the instrument is properly plugged into the AC outlet.
The instrument turns off automatically even if no operation is done. This is due to the Auto Power Off function. Disable it if you wish to prevent this (page 9).
Noise is heard from speakers or headphones.Interference from nearby mobile phones or other electronic devices. Move the instrument away from such devices, or enable "Airplane Mode" on your smart device if using an app.
Overall volume is low, or no sound is heard.Master Volume is set too low. Adjust using the [VOLUME] slider (page 8). Ensure headphones or an adaptor are not connected to the [PHONES] jack.
The pedal has no effect.Ensure the pedal cable/plug is properly connected to the [SUSTAIN] or [PEDAL UNIT] jack.
Footswitch (sustain) effect is reversed (pressing cuts sound, releasing sustains). The footswitch polarity was reversed because it was pressed when the power was turned on. Turn the power off and on again to reset. Do not press the footswitch when turning the power on.
No sound or noise when connecting computer/smart device via USB TO HOST.Communication may not be possible depending on the model or OS of the computer/smart device.

  • Foot pedal: FC3A (features Half-pedal function)
  • [P-145BT only] Pedal Unit: LP-5A (features Half-pedal function)

Half-pedal function

This function allows you to vary the sustain length depending on how far the Damper pedal is pressed. The farther down you press the pedal, the more the sound sustains. For example, if you press the damper pedal and all notes you are playing sound a bit murky and loud with too much sustain, you can release the pedal half way or higher to decrease the sustain.

Pedal Functions (For Pedal Unit LP-5A)

Damper pedal (right pedal):

Notes will be sustained as long as this pedal is depressed, even if you release your fingers from the keys. It corresponds to the Damper Resonance function. The deeper you depress the pedal, the longer the note is sustained (corresponding to the Half Pedal function).

Sostenuto pedal (center pedal):

If you play a note or chord on the keyboard and press the sostenuto pedal while holding the note(s), the notes will sustain as long as the pedal is held. Since this pedal does not affect notes played while it is depressed, you can achieve playing styles such as a staccato melody while sustaining a chord.

Soft pedal (left pedal):

Keys played after depressing this pedal will be slightly softer and less resonant. The effect continues as long as the pedal is depressed. Depress the pedal just before playing the note(s) you would like to alter.

Pedal function in Duo (page 10):

  • Right Pedal: Damper pedal for the right-hand range.
  • Center Pedal: Damper pedal for both the right-hand and left-hand ranges.
  • Left Pedal: Damper pedal for the left-hand range.
