BOYA BY-CM5 Desktop USB Microphone

User Manual

General Introduction

Thank you for choosing BOYA! The BOYA BY-CM5 is a USB condenser microphone, compatible with most Android devices, tablets with USB-C connectors, and Mac/Windows computers. It is suitable for various applications such as home-studio recording, podcasting, video conference calls, vocals, and instrument recording.

The microphone features selectable cardioid and omnidirectional pickup patterns, allowing customization of audio capture, and supports 24bit/48 kHz resolution. A built-in 3.5mm headphone jack enables real-time audio monitoring. The headphone volume/gain/mute multi-function control allows for easy adjustment of audio levels. With an adjustable desk stand, users can position the microphone at their desired angle.

Cautions

  • If you do not intend to use the microphone for a long period, please remove the USB cable.
  • Do not touch the microphone while recording, as this will cause noise to be recorded.
  • Do not place the microphone near high-voltage equipment or devices that emit strong electromagnetic fields; otherwise, it may cause noise to be recorded.
  • Do not leave the microphone in hot or humid places.

Package Contents

  • BY-CM5 Microphone x 1

Product Structure

The BY-CM5 microphone features the following components:

  • 1. Metal mesh windscreen: Protects the microphone capsule.
  • 2. Headphone volume/gain/mute control: A multi-function knob. Short press to mute/unmute (indicator light turns solid blue when muted). Long press for 2 seconds to switch between headphone volume control and gain control. Rotate to adjust the selected function.
  • 3. Polar pattern indicators: Lights indicating the selected pickup pattern: Cardioid (心型) or Omnidirectional (全向型).
  • 4. Polar pattern switch: A touch-sensitive button to switch between Cardioid and Omnidirectional pickup patterns.
  • 5. Locking knobs: Used to adjust and secure the microphone's angle on the stand.
  • 6. Desk stand: A detachable stand for desktop placement.
  • 7. USB-C audio output: The primary connection port for audio data.
  • 8. 3.5mm headphone output: For connecting headphones for real-time monitoring.
  • 9. 5/8" threaded hole: Located at the base for mounting onto boom arms or stands.

Polar Patterns

The BY-CM5 offers two selectable polar patterns:

Cardioid

This pattern maximizes the rejection of sound coming from the sides and rear of the microphone. It is used as a directional microphone to capture full, rich, natural-sounding audio, ideal for podcasting, tech talks, dialog, and instrument recording.

Omnidirectional

This pattern picks up sound equally from all directions. It captures a natural blend of voice and ambiance, with low sensitivity to wind, handling noise, and vocal plosives.

Functions

Angle Adjustment

To adjust the microphone's angle: Loosen the locking knobs on both sides anticlockwise, position the microphone at the desired angle, and then tighten the knobs.

Mounting the BY-CMS to a Boom Arm

To mount the BY-CMS to a boom arm: Unscrew the locking knobs to remove the microphone from its desktop stand. Mount the BY-CMS to the boom arm using its 5/8" threaded hole. Note: The boom arm is not included.
