- FAE010 Flexible Hose Ø50 is used for connections.
Connections and Control Units
Connection: FAE with NAE, DI and Modular Control Units
JBC control units can be connected to the fume extractor using an RJ12 cable. For DI control units, an adapter and a USB-A/USB-B cable are required. This connection allows the fume extractor to automatically start extraction when a soldering tool is in use.
Ensure control units are updated with the latest software version from www.jbctools.com/software.html.
Minimum required software versions for FAE compatibility:
Control Units | Software Version |
---|---|
DDE, HDE, NAE | 8886160 |
DME | 8886162 |
DI | 8886602 |
Diagram: Shows connections between Modular Control Unit, NAE Control Unit, DI Control Unit, and the Fume Extractor using RJ12 cables and USB adapters. Includes screenshots of control unit menus (Main Menu, Tool Menu, Peripherals Menu) demonstrating how to detect and configure the fume extractor.
From software versions 8886887 (DDE,HDE) and 8886784 (NAE), the fume extractor can be configured and controlled via the Peripherals menu. DI control units do not support this function.
Each control unit detects the fume extractor as "FAE_a". The tool activating extraction needs to be configured in the control unit's main menu via the tool menu option.
Up to 4 control units can be connected to the fume extractor's STATION connectors (1, 2, etc.). Each connected tool can start and stop the fume extractor.
Connection: FAE with Compact Stations
Use the USB connection cable and adapter, or the RJ12 cable, to connect JBC Soldering Stations. Both methods enable automatic extraction when tools are in use.
Diagram: Illustrates connecting the Fume Extractor to Compact Stations (version "F" and newer, and version "E" and previous) using RJ12 Connection Cable or USB Connection Cable + Adapter.
Important: Connect the compact station to the fume extractor first, then switch on the fume extractor. Otherwise, the compact station cannot control the fume extractor.
Fume Extractor Firmware Update
The FAE fume extractor can be updated via its USB-B connector using the USB connection cable. Firmware update files are available for download at www.jbctools.com/software.html.
Note: The RJ12 station connection cable must be disconnected for the update process. If a station is connected via RJ12, the update will not start.
Diagram: Shows a laptop with a "JBC Firmware Update File" connected via USB Connection Cable (USB-A to USB-B) to the Fume Extractor, which displays its status.
Operation
Fume Extractor Activation
When the fume extractor is turned on, the display shows the operational status. The filter saturation indicator is green if the carbon filter lifetime is higher than 20%.
Screenshot: Fume Extractor display showing Filter status (Saturation 20%, Carbon life 90%), Flow (HML), and Aspiration (ON). Includes a legend for Filter Saturation Indicator colors (Green, Yellow, Red).
Error Messages:
- STOP #4: Indicates the cover is opened or badly closed. Double-check the cover. Power off the unit, remove and re-secure the cover.
Troubleshooting: Station troubleshooting is available on the product page at www.jbctools.com.

Maintenance - Filter Replacement
The fume extractor unit indicates when filters need replacement via the display and an indicator LED.
Diagram: Illustrates the Fume Extractor unit with components labeled for filter replacement: Cover (1), Quick Release Levers (2), Indicator LED (3), Pre-Filter (4), Main Filter (5), and Casing with Filter Ribs (6).
- To replace filters, remove the cover (1) by opening the quick release levers (2) on both sides of the casing.
- If the indicator LED (3) remains red after replacing the pre-filter (4), the main filter (5) is saturated and must also be replaced.
- After replacing the main filter (5), reset the carbon filter counter via the Main Menu: Filter Set > Reset Carbon.
- The service life of the main filter is a maximum of 1 year after opening its packaging.
- If the main filter is changed while the fume extractor is switched on, the unit will automatically start the filter detection process and activate aspiration for a few seconds.
Note: The main filter has a specific orientation. Ensure the filter ribs mate with the corresponding slots in the casing.
Connect the filter tube to the quick-coupling located on the fume extractor casing.
Quick Release Lever Adjustment
To ensure airtight seals, the locking force between the casing and cover can be adjusted by turning the knurled nut of the locking lever.
- Turn the knurled nut clockwise to loosen and counterclockwise to tighten the locking force.
