Installation Requirements
Proper installation requires adherence to specific guidelines to ensure safety and functionality. Always consult local codes and the manufacturer's manual.
Location Requirements
- Observe all governing codes and ordinances.
- To reduce the risk of burns or fire from reaching over heated surface units, avoid cabinet storage directly above the range. If storage is necessary, install a range hood that projects at least 5 inches horizontally beyond the bottom of the cabinets.
- The installer is responsible for complying with installation clearances specified on the model/serial/rating plate, typically located on the frame behind the top corner of the door or the side of the drawer.
- The range should be placed in a convenient kitchen location.
- Recessed installations must ensure complete enclosure of the range's sides and rear.
- All wall or floor openings where the range is installed must be sealed.
- Use the specified cabinet opening dimensions; these are minimum clearances.
- The anti-tip bracket must be installed. Refer to the specific section for installation instructions.
- A grounded electrical supply is required. Consult the "Electrical Requirements" section.
- Ensure floor covering can withstand at least 200°F (93°C). Contact a qualified installer if unsure.
- If installing over carpeting, use an insulated pad or 1/4" (0.64 cm) plywood underneath.
- IMPORTANT: Verify with your builder or cabinet supplier that cabinet materials will not discolor, delaminate, or sustain damage. This oven complies with UL and CSA International requirements for maximum allowable wood cabinet temperatures of 194°F (90°C).
Mobile Home Installation Requirements
- Installation must conform to the Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standard (e.g., 24 CFR Part 3280 in the US, or CAN/CSA-Z240.1 in Canada), or local codes.
- The range must be secured to the floor during transit.
- A four-wire power supply cord or cable is required for mobile home installations. Appliance wiring may need revision.
Cabinet Dimensions
The following dimensions are for installations with a 25" (64.0 cm) countertop depth, 24" (61.0 cm) base cabinet depth, and 36" (91.4 cm) countertop height.
Diagram Description: A diagram illustrates cabinet clearances. Key dimensions are:
- A: Minimum clearance to top of cooktop (refer to NOTE*).
- B: 30" (76.2 cm) minimum opening width.
- C: 13" (33.0 cm) maximum upper cabinet depth.
- D: 30" (76.2 cm) minimum opening width.
- E: Outlet placement: 8" (20.3 cm) to 22" (55.9 cm) from either cabinet, 7" (17.8 cm) maximum from the floor.
- F: Cabinet door or hinges must not extend into the cutout.
*NOTE: A 24" (61.0 cm) minimum clearance is required when the bottom of the wood or metal cabinet is protected by flame-retardant millboard (at least 1/4" or 0.64 cm thick) covered with sheet steel (No. 28 MSG), stainless steel (0.015" or 0.4 mm), aluminum (0.024" or 0.6 mm), or copper (0.020" or 0.5 mm). A 30" (76.2 cm) minimum clearance is required between the cooktop surface and the bottom of an unprotected wood or metal cabinet.
A freestanding range can be installed next to combustible walls with zero clearance.
Electrical Requirements
Proper electrical connection is crucial for safe operation. Ensure compliance with all applicable codes and standards.
United States - Electrical Connection
WARNING: Electrical Shock Hazard. Appliance must be grounded. Failure to do so could result in death, fire, or electrical shock.
Determine the correct electrical connection type and follow these instructions.
The range must be connected to the specified electrical voltage and frequency, as indicated on the model/serial/rating plate. This plate is typically located on the frame behind the top corner of the door or the side of the drawer.
Diagram Description: A diagram shows the rear of the range, with label 'A' pointing to the location of the model/serial/rating plate.
Grounding: If local codes permit a separate ground wire, have a qualified installer verify the ground path and wire gauge. Do not use an extension cord. Ensure the electrical connection and wire size comply with the National Electrical Code (ANSI/NFPA 70) and all local codes.
WARNING: Improper grounding can cause electric shock. Consult a qualified electrician if unsure. Do not modify the power supply cord plug. If it does not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed.
Connection Types:
- 3-Wire System: The range is manufactured with the neutral terminal connected to the cabinet. Use a UL-listed, 3-wire, 40A or 50A flexible power supply cord (pigtail). If local codes prohibit grounding through the neutral, a 4-wire cord is required.
- 4-Wire System: For new branch-circuit installations, mobile homes, or areas where local codes prohibit grounding through the neutral, a 4-wire system is mandatory. The green ground wire of the 4-wire cord must be connected to the cabinet.
Range Rating and Power Supply Cord Specifications:
Range Rating* (kW) | Specified Rating of Power Supply Cord Kit and Circuit Protection (Amperes) | |
---|---|---|
120/240 V | 120/208 V | |
8.8-16.5 kW | 7.8-12.5 kW | 40 or 50** |
16.6-22.5 kW | 12.6-18.5 kW | 50** |
*The NEC calculated load is less than the total connected load listed on the model/serial/rating plate.
**For 50A rated cord kits, use kits specifying a nominal 1 3/8" (34.9 mm) diameter connection opening.
A circuit breaker is recommended. The range can be connected directly to a circuit breaker box or fused disconnect using flexible or nonmetallic sheathed cable. Allow 2 to 3 ft (61.0 cm to 91.4 cm) of slack for servicing. A UL-listed conduit connector is required at each end of the power supply cable.
Diagram Descriptions:
- 4-wire receptacle (NEMA 14-50R): A diagram shows a 4-slot receptacle. Minimum conductor sizes for a 4-wire copper cord are: 40A circuit: 2 No.-8 conductors, 1 No.-10 white neutral, 1 No.-8 green grounding.
- 3-wire receptacle (NEMA 10-50R): A diagram shows a 3-slot receptacle. Local codes may permit a 3-wire cord.
Canada - Electrical Connection
WARNING: Electrical Shock Hazard. Appliance must be grounded. Failure to do so could result in death, fire, or electrical shock.
If local codes permit a separate ground wire, a qualified installer should verify its adequacy and gauge. Ensure electrical connection and wire size comply with CSA Standard C22.1, Canadian Electrical Code, Part 1, and local codes.
