User Manual and Operating Instructions
Introduction
This document provides comprehensive instructions for the KRUPS Palatino Art. 905 espresso machine. It covers setup, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and warranty information. The manual is available in English, French, and Spanish.
Important Safeguards
When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should always be followed:
- Read all instructions before use.
- Do not touch hot surfaces, including the water tank.
- To avoid electrical shocks, do not immerse the cord, plug, or any other non-removable part in water or other liquid.
- Never direct steam or hot water spray toward the body, as this can cause burns.
- Close supervision is necessary when the appliance is used near children.
- Unplug the appliance when not in use and before cleaning. Allow it to cool before putting on or removing parts and before cleaning.
- Do not use the appliance outdoors.
- Do not let the power cord hang over the edge of the table or counter, or touch hot surfaces.
- The main plug must be pulled out if anything unusual occurs during the brewing process. Always be sure to unplug the machine before any cleaning operation.
- Do not place the appliance on or near a hot gas or electric burner, or in an oven.
- Make sure the appliance is OFF before unplugging or plugging it back in.
- Do not use the appliance for anything other than its intended use.
- Do not pour liquids other than water and descaling solutions specified in this manual into the water tank.
- Do not lift or move the entire unit while the machine is in use.
- Do not get too close to the water tank during the brewing cycle, as it may be hot due to steam.
- The use of accessories not recommended or sold by KRUPS may result in fire, electric shock, or injury.
- This appliance is designed for household use. All procedures other than cleaning and daily maintenance should be handled by your nearest authorized KRUPS Service Center.
- Do not dismantle the appliance; there are no user-repairable parts. All repairs must be made by an authorized KRUPS Service Center.
Instructions for the Cord
- Connect the appliance only to a grounded electrical outlet.
- Check that your appliance's voltage matches your outlet's voltage. Incorrect connection invalidates the warranty.
- The cord length is selected to reduce the chances of accidents.
- Extension cords may be used with caution. If using an extension cord, its electrical capacity must equal or be greater than the appliance's. If the appliance is grounded, the extension cord must have three conductors, one of which is grounded. The cord and extension should be placed out of reach of children and in a way that prevents tripping.
- The appliance has a polarized plug (one prong is wider than the other). This plug fits into a polarized outlet only one way for safety. If the plug does not fit properly, reverse it. If it still does not fit, contact an electrician. Do not attempt to defeat this safety feature.
- If the cord is damaged, do not use the appliance. Have it replaced by an authorized KRUPS Service Center to avoid accidents.

Operation
1. Filling the Water Tank
Remove the lid and the water tank (a). Fill the tank with cold water and replace it securely, ensuring the base valve allows water to flow through. Place the lid back on the tank. Water can also be added directly to the tank without removing it.
2. Switching On
Plug in the appliance. Press the On/Off button (d1). The indicator light will come on. The machine will perform an internal diagnostic (normal noises may occur). The indicator light will flash during warm-up (approx. 2 minutes) and then glow steadily when ready.
3. Starting the Heating System (Priming)
Before first use, prime the system to release air:
- Place a container beneath the steam/hot water nozzle (g).
- Turn the steam selector knob (e) towards you. The pump will start.
- Wait until water flows steadily from the nozzle.
- Turn the knob (e) to the off position by turning it away from you.
4. Filling the Coffee Bean Compartment
Remove the lid of the coffee bean compartment (b) and fill with coffee beans (max. 12.5 oz or 3/4 lb). Replace the lid.
Fineness Adjustment: Use knob (b1) to adjust grind fineness. For first-time use, set to the intermediate position "8". Adjust only while the grinder is running and avoid extreme settings.
Tips on Adjusting Fineness:
- Fine settings (1-8) are preferred for lightly-roasted beans.
- Coarser settings (9-18) are for darker-roasted beans.
- If espresso runs through too quickly without froth, the grind is too coarse; reduce the knob setting by 2.
- If espresso runs too slowly or is burnt, the grind is too fine; increase the knob setting by 2.
Your appliance is now ready for use.
5. The Espresso Function
Ensure the water tank and coffee bean compartment are filled, and the indicator lights for d1 and d2 are lit.
- Place a cup under the coffee spigot (f). Adjust the spigot height for cup size.
- Use the regulator knob (d4) to select the desired coffee quantity (min. 30 ml, max. 250 ml).
- Press the coffee button (d2). The indicator light will flash. Coffee will start to flow.
- You can adjust the quantity while brewing by turning knob (d4).
- Wait until the coffee flow stops. The indicator light on (d2) will become steady, indicating readiness.
- To stop the flow at any time, press the coffee button (d2) again.
To prepare two espressos simultaneously:

- Prepare an espresso.
- Select the steam button (d3) as described above.
- Place an empty cup under the steam nozzle (g). Turn the steam selector knob (e) towards you to release any water from the nozzle before dry steam appears.
- Once dry steam is produced, turn the steam selector knob (e) off by turning it away from you.
- For best results, ensure the perfect froth attachment (h) is correctly positioned on the nozzle (g). This accessory is for frothing milk only.
- Pour cold milk (skim or low-fat recommended) into a cold frothing pitcher.
- Place the pitcher under the nozzle, ensuring the rubber tip is immersed in the milk.
- Turn the steam selector knob (e) towards you. Hold the pitcher and do not let the nozzle touch the bottom to avoid impeding steam flow.
- Once froth is obtained, turn the steam selector knob (e) off.
- Clean the perfect froth attachment and nozzle immediately with a damp cloth. Produce steam briefly to clear any milk residue from the nozzle to prevent clogging.
- Add hot frothy milk to your espresso. Hold back froth with a spoon, pour the steamed milk, then spoon the froth on top.
7. Steaming Milk / Heating Liquids
- Remove the perfect froth attachment (h).
- Select the steam button (d3). Its indicator light will flash, and the coffee button light (d2) will go out.

9. The Hot Water Function
Your appliance can also dispense hot water.
- Ensure the appliance is ready (d1, d2 lights on, water tank filled). Do not press the steam button (d3).
- Place a container under the steam/hot water nozzle (g).
- Turn the steam selector knob (e) towards you.
- Once the container is filled, return the tap (e) to the "off" position.
Maintenance and Cleaning
To clean the appliance, unplug it and allow it to cool down. Do not wash accessories in a dishwasher.
Body of the Appliance
Clean with a damp cloth. Do not use tools or cleaning products that might scratch the bodywork.
Water Tank (a)
Empty the water tank daily and refill with fresh water as needed. Avoid letting water stagnate. If the appliance is not used for extended periods, drain and leave empty.
Compartment for Used Coffee Grounds (m)
Empty this compartment frequently, at least every 20 uses. Remove the compartment from its housing (9); the warning light (d5) will flash. Clean with hot water and mild dishwashing liquid, rinse, and dry. Replace it correctly; the warning light (d5) will go out.
Drip Tray (j)
The tray has a saturation indicator (k). Empty the tray when the indicator (k) rises above the grid (10). The warning light (d5) will flash. Failure to drain may lead to overflow. Clean the tray (j) and grid (i) with hot water and mild dishwashing liquid, rinse, and dry. Place the grid on the tray. Ensure the tray is pushed in fully, or the warning light (d5) will not go out. If correctly placed, the warning light (d5) will extinguish.
Adjustable Spigot for Coffee (f)
The coffee spigot can be removed for cleaning. Ensure the appliance is switched off and unplugged.
- Open the service hatch (p) (opens from the left, swings outward).
- Remove the support tabs holding the coffee outlet (f) by pulling them upwards (11).
- Clean the spigot in hot water and mild dishwashing liquid, rinse, and dry.
- Replace the spigot in its housing; you will hear a "click" when it locks.
- Close the service hatch, plug in the appliance, and press the On/Off button (d1) to restart.
Note: If the extraction chamber is fitted incorrectly, the warning light (d5) will flash. Switch off, unplug, remove, and refit the chamber. If the extraction chamber is blocked, plug in, turn on, and when the indicator light (d2) flashes, switch off and unplug to unblock it.
Steam/Hot Water Nozzle (g)
Clean the nozzle after each use by allowing steam to flow for 2-3 seconds and then wiping with a damp cloth. Be careful, as it may still be hot. If the opening is blocked, clear it with a fine needle.
Cappuccino Accessory (h)
To clean the perfect froth attachment, separate parts A, B, and C (12). Rinse the parts in hot water. If the small hole in part A is blocked, clean it with a fine needle. Cleaning immediately after use prevents future blockages.
Detachable Extraction Chamber (q)
Clean the detachable extraction chamber once or twice a week, depending on usage. Ensure the appliance is switched off and unplugged before cleaning.
- Open the service hatch (p) and gently remove the used coffee grounds compartment (m).
- Using the handle, remove the extraction chamber by pressing the "PRESS" area (13).
- Clean the extraction chamber with hot water and mild dishwashing liquid, rinse, and dry.
- For thorough cleaning, remove the filter by unscrewing it counterclockwise using the key (o) (14). Clean the filter in hot water and screw it back in place.
- Replace the extraction chamber in its housing without pressing "PRESS".
- Reposition the coffee grounds compartment (m) correctly.
- Close the service hatch, plug in the appliance, and press the On/Off button (d1) to restart.
Descaling
To ensure optimal performance and coffee quality, descale your KRUPS appliance at regular intervals. Depending on water hardness, this should be done every three to six months. If your water is very hard or you use the appliance frequently, descale more often.
Note: Use only KRUPS descaler, citric acid, or tartaric acid. Using other products may damage the appliance. Check the composition of descaling products carefully.
The appliance must be plugged in but switched off (indicator light of control d1 out). For best results, descale when the appliance is cold. The entire process takes approximately 20 minutes.
- Remove the water tank (a). Fill it with 0.5 liter (17 oz) of warm water and add the contents of one packet of KRUPS descaler, or 4 tablespoons of citric or tartaric acid.
- Mix until dissolved. Replace the water tank and its lid.
- Place a mug (approx. 7 oz) under the steam/hot water nozzle (g).
- Turn the steam selector knob (e) on.
- Allow 1/3 of the water tank's contents (approx. 40 seconds) to flow through the nozzle.
- Turn the steam selector knob (e) "off".
- Turn off the machine by pressing the On/Off button (d1). The indicator light will go out.
- Empty the container. Let the machine sit for five minutes for the descaling solution to work.
- Repeat steps 3-7 two more times.
- Rinse the water tank (a) thoroughly and fill with fresh water.
- Turn the machine back on (d1).
- Place a container under the nozzle (g).
- Turn the steam selector knob (e) on.
- Allow the contents of one full water tank to flow through.
Your appliance is now ready for use.
