Leica M11 Firmware Update 2.5.1
For Leica M11, Leica M11 Monochrom, Leica M11-P, Leica M11-D
New Features
- Compliance with EU Radio Equipment Directive (Article 3.3).
- Enhanced WLAN Security: Assigns a new random WLAN password upon camera reset.
- First-time Operation Protection: PTP pairing only after completing the connection wizard to prevent unauthorized connections.
- Secure Formatting: Internal memory can now be completely overwritten (secure erase).
Bug Fixes
- Fixed the low battery warning that appeared when the battery was sufficiently charged.
Important Information Regarding SD Card Usage
In rare cases, technical issues may arise when using UHS-I cards. To avoid these errors under normal circumstances and ensure optimal camera performance, Leica recommends using UHS-II cards.
Firmware Update
Leica is committed to the continuous development and optimization of its camera products. As many camera functions are entirely software-controlled, improvements and extensions can be installed later. Leica periodically provides firmware updates, which can be downloaded from their homepage. Registered users will receive notifications about all Leica updates. Leica FOTOS app users also automatically receive relevant information about Leica cameras through firmware updates.
Firmware installation can be done in two ways:
- Via the Leica FOTOS app.
- Directly via the camera menu.
How to Check Installed Firmware Version
In the main menu, select "Camera Information". Next to the menu item "Camera Firmware Version", the current firmware version name is displayed.
Executing Firmware Update
Warning: Interrupting an ongoing firmware update may cause severe and irreparable damage to the device! Therefore, pay special attention to the following during the firmware update:
- Do not turn off the camera! ?
- Do not remove the memory card! ?
- Do not remove the battery! ?
- Do not remove the lens! ?
Notes:
- If the battery power is low, a warning message will appear. In this case, charge the battery first, then repeat the steps. ?
- In the camera information submenu, you will find other device and country approval marks or license numbers. ?
Preparation
- Charge the battery fully and insert it. ?
- Delete all firmware files from the memory card. ?️
- It is recommended to back up all photos from the memory card, then format it in the camera. (Note: Data loss! All files on the card will be lost when the memory card is formatted.) ⚠️
- As a precaution, back up files from the internal memory as well. ?
- Download the latest firmware. ⬇️
- Save to memory card: The firmware file must be saved in the top-level directory of the memory card (not in a subdirectory).
- Insert the memory card into the camera. ➡️
- Turn on the camera. ▶️

- Press and hold the function button.
- Turn on the camera.
During the update, the status LED and self-timer LED will flash red, and "UP" will be displayed in the viewfinder. ?
Memory Formatting
It is recommended to format the memory periodically, as residual data (e.g., shooting metadata) can occupy memory space. Memory cards and internal memory can be formatted separately. Please note the following:
- Do not turn off the camera during the process. ?
- When formatting memory, all files on it will be lost. Formatting will delete photos marked for deletion protection.
- Therefore, all photos should be regularly transferred to a secure, high-capacity storage medium, such as a computer hard drive. ?
Secure Formatting of Internal Memory (Secure Erase)
Internal memory can be formatted to remove residual data accumulated over time or to quickly clear the storage.
Process:
- In the main menu, select "Memory Management".
- Select "Format Memory".
- Select "Format Internal Memory (Secure)".
- Confirm the operation.
Notes:
- In simple formatting, only the directory is deleted, making existing data inaccessible directly. Some software can restore this data. Only data overwritten by new storage is truly and permanently deleted. To permanently and irrecoverably delete all images, video clips, and personal data, use the "Format Internal Memory (Secure)" procedure. This process may take up to 75 minutes. ⏳
- If a memory card was previously formatted on another device (e.g., a computer), it should be reformatted in the camera.
- For Leica M11-D, the secure erase process can only be performed via the Leica FOTOS App.
