Leica M11 Series Firmware Update 2.5.1 and Storage Formatting Guide
This document provides instructions for updating the firmware of Leica M11, M11 Monochrom, M11-P, and M11-D cameras to version 2.5.1, along with guidance on storage management and secure internal memory formatting.
Firmware Update 2.5.1
New Features
- Compliance with "EU Radio Equipment Directive (Article 3.3)"
- Enhanced Wi-Fi Security: Upon camera reset, a new randomly generated WLAN password will be set.
- First Run Protection: PTP pairing is only possible after completing the connection wizard steps to prevent unauthorized connections.
- Secure Formatting: Internal memory can now be completely overwritten (secure erase).
Bug Fixes
- Addressed an error that caused a low battery warning even when the battery had sufficient power.
Important Information Regarding SD Card Usage
In rare cases, technical issues may occur when using UHS-I cards. To generally avoid these errors and ensure optimal camera performance, Leica recommends using UHS-II cards.
Firmware Updates
Leica continuously develops and optimizes cameras. As many camera functions are software-controlled, enhancements and improvements can be installed. Leica occasionally offers firmware updates for download from their website. Registered cameras will be notified of the latest updates. Leica FOTOS users will also be automatically informed.
Firmware updates can be installed in two ways:
- Conveniently via the Leica FOTOS app
- Directly from the camera menu
Checking the Installed Firmware Version
- From the main menu, select .
- Next to the menu item, the current firmware version is displayed.

Performing a Firmware Update
Warning: If a firmware update is interrupted, severe permanent damage to your equipment may occur!
Therefore, pay close attention to the following information during the firmware update:
- Do not turn off the camera!
- Do not remove the memory card!
- Do not remove the battery!
- Do not detach the lens!
Notes
- If the battery is not fully charged, a warning message will appear. In this case, charge the battery first and repeat the procedure.
- The submenu contains approval marks and numbers for additional devices and specific countries.
Preparation
- Charge and insert the battery.
- If present, remove all firmware files from the memory card.
- It is recommended to back up all images on the memory card, then format the memory card in the camera. (Caution: Data will be lost! Formatting the memory card erases all available data.)
- Files in internal memory should also be backed up as a precautionary measure.
- Download the latest firmware.
- Save to memory card: Firmware files must be saved in the top-level folder on the memory card (not in a subfolder).
- Insert the memory card into the camera.
- Turn on the camera.

- Turn on the camera.
- During the update, the status LED and the automatic timer LED will blink red, and "UP" will appear in the viewfinder.
Formatting Storage Locations
It is advisable to format storage locations occasionally, as residual data (image-related information) may consume memory capacity. The inserted memory card and internal memory can be formatted separately. Please note the following:
- Do not turn off the camera while the process is running.
- If the memory card is formatted, all available data on it will be erased. Formatting cannot be prevented by marking images with write protection.
- Therefore, all images should be regularly transferred to secure mass storage, such as a computer's hard disk.
Internal Memory Secure Erase
Internal memory can be formatted to erase residual data accumulated over time or to quickly free up memory.
Storage Formatting Options:
- Format Storage
- Format SD Card
- Format internal memory (fast)
- Format internal memory (secure)
- From the main menu, select .
- Select .
- Select .
- Confirm the operation.
Notes
- Normal formatting only deletes directories, making existing files inaccessible. With appropriate software, data can be recovered. Data is permanently erased only when overwritten by newly saved data.
- To thoroughly and permanently erase all images, image fragments, and personal data, the erase process must be selected. This process may take up to 75 minutes.
- If a memory card is formatted on another device, such as a computer, you must reformat the memory card in the camera.
- For the Leica M11-D, the secure erase process can only be performed using the Leica FOTOS app.
