Important Information Regarding SD Card Usage
In rare cases, technical problems may occur when using UHS-I cards. To generally avoid this error and ensure the best possible performance of your camera, Leica recommends using UHS-II cards.

Firmware Updates
Leica continuously works on the further development and optimization of your camera. Since many camera functions are purely software-controlled, improvements and extensions to the range of functions can be installed retrospectively on your camera. For this purpose, Leica offers firmware updates at irregular intervals, which are made available for download on our homepage.
If you have registered your camera, Leica will inform you about all new updates. Users of Leica FOTOS will also be automatically informed about firmware updates for their Leica cameras.
Firmware updates can be installed in two different ways:
- Conveniently via the Leica FOTOS app
- Directly via the camera menu
Checking Installed Firmware Version
In the main menu, select "Camera Information". Next to the menu item "Firmware Version Camera", the current firmware version is displayed.
(Visual Description: A screenshot of the camera's "Camera Information" menu, showing options such as "Firmware Version Camera", "MAC Address (Wi-Fi)", "MAC Address (Bluetooth)", "License Information", "Regulatory Information", and "Copyright Information".)
Further information on registration, firmware updates, and their downloads for your camera, as well as any changes and additions to the explanations in this guide, can be found in the "Customer Area" at: club.leica-camera.com
Performing Firmware Updates
Warning: Interrupting a running firmware update can lead to serious and irreparable damage to your equipment!
During the firmware update, you must therefore observe the following instructions in particular:
- Do not switch off the camera!
- Do not remove the memory card!
- Do not remove the battery!
- Do not remove the lens!
Notes
- If the battery is not sufficiently charged, a warning message will appear. In this case, first charge the battery and repeat the process described above.
- In the "Camera Information" submenu, you will find further device- and country-specific approval marks or numbers.
Preparations
- Charge and insert the battery completely.
- Remove any existing firmware files from the memory card.
- It is recommended to back up all recordings from the memory card and then format it in the camera. (Attention: Data loss! When formatting the memory card, all data stored on it will be lost.)
- For safety, files stored in the internal memory should also be backed up.
- Download the latest firmware.
- Save to memory card. The firmware file must be saved in the top-level directory of the memory card (not in a subdirectory).
- Insert the memory card into the camera.
- Switch on the camera.
Updating Camera Firmware
M11 / M11-P / M11 Monochrom
- Perform preparations.
- In the main menu, select "Camera Information".
- Select "Firmware Version Camera".
- Select "Firmware Update".
- A query with information about the update will appear.
- Check version information.
- Select "Yes".
- The query "Do you want to save the profiles to the SD card?" appears.
- Select "Yes/No".
- The update starts automatically.
- During the process, the lower status LED flashes.
- After successful completion, a corresponding message appears, and the camera restarts.
Notes
- It is recommended to reset the camera to factory settings after an update.
- After resetting, Date & Time and Language must be set again. Corresponding prompts will appear.
M11-D
- Perform preparations.
- Hold down the function button.
- Switch on the camera.
During the update, the status LED and the self-timer LED flash red, and "UP" is displayed in the viewfinder.
Formatting Storage Locations
It is advisable to format the storage locations occasionally, as certain residual data (recording-related information) can occupy storage capacity. A memory card and the internal memory can be formatted independently of each other. Please observe the following:
- Do not switch off the camera during the ongoing process.
- When formatting a storage location, all data stored on it will be lost.
- Formatting is not prevented by the write protection of marked recordings.
- All recordings should therefore be regularly transferred to a secure mass storage device, such as a computer's hard drive.
Internal Memory Secure Formatting (SECURE ERASE)
The internal memory can be formatted to remove accumulated residual data over time or to quickly clear the memory.
(Visual Description: A screenshot of the formatting options menu, showing "Format Storage", "Format SD Card", "Format internal memory (fast)", and "Format internal memory (secure)".)
- In the main menu, select "Storage Management".
- Select "Format Storage".
- Select "Format internal memory (secure)".
- Confirm the process.
Notes
- Simple formatting only deletes the directory, making the existing files no longer immediately accessible. With appropriate software, the data can be made accessible again. Only data that is subsequently overwritten by saving new data is truly permanently deleted. To completely and irretrievably delete all images, image fragments, and personal data, the "Format internal memory (secure)" erase process should be selected. This process can take up to 75 minutes.
- If the memory card was formatted on another device, such as a computer, it should be formatted again in the camera.
- In the case of the Leica M11-D, the secure erase process can only be performed via the Leica FOTOS app.
