Important Information Regarding SD Card Usage
Technical issues may occur when using UHS-I cards. Leica generally recommends using UHS-II cards to prevent such errors and ensure optimal camera performance.
Firmware Update Procedure
Leica is continuously striving to improve and optimize your camera. Many camera functions are controlled entirely by software, allowing future functional improvements and expansions to be installed on the camera. For this purpose, Leica provides firmware updates that can be downloaded from our website without a fixed schedule.
If you register your camera, you can receive notifications of new updates from Leica. Users of the Leica FOTOS app also automatically receive information about Leica camera firmware updates.
Firmware can be installed in two ways:
- Easy installation via the Leica FOTOS app
- Direct installation via the camera menu
To check the installed firmware version:
- Select Camera Information from the main menu.
- The current firmware version name is displayed next to the 'Camera Firmware Version' menu item.
Kamera-Informationen (Camera Information) Screen Description: The screen displays fields such as: Firmware Version Camera, MAC Address (Wi-Fi), MAC Address (Bluetooth), License Information, Regulatory Information, Copyright Information.

Executing Firmware Update
A canceled firmware update process can cause irreversible, severe damage to the device! Therefore, pay special attention to the following information during the firmware update:
- Do not turn off the camera!
- Do not remove the memory card!
- Do not remove the battery!
- Do not detach the lens!
Note:
- If the battery is not sufficiently charged, a warning message will be displayed. In this case, first charge the battery and repeat the procedure described above.
- You can check detailed device and country-specific approval marks or numbers in the Camera Information submenu.
Preparation
- Insert the fully charged battery into the camera.
- In case of doubt, remove all firmware files from the memory card.
- It is recommended to back up all recordings from the memory card and then format it in the camera. (Caution: Data loss! Formatting the memory card will delete all data present on the memory card.)
- For safety, back up files in the internal memory as well.
- Download the latest firmware.
- Save it to the memory card.
- The firmware file must be saved at the top-level directory of the memory card (not in a sub-directory).
- Insert the memory card into the camera.
- Turn on the camera.

Formatting Storage
It is recommended to format storage locations periodically, as a certain amount of residual data (ancillary image data) may occupy memory space. The inserted memory card and internal memory can be formatted independently of each other.
Please note the following:
- Do not turn off the camera during the formatting process.
- Formatting a storage location will result in the loss of all data on it. If formatted, photos with the delete protection function enabled will not be protected.
- Therefore, all photos should be regularly backed up to a secure storage device (e.g., transferred to your computer's hard disk).
Securely Erase Internal Memory (SECURE ERASE)
Formatting the internal memory allows you to remove accumulated residual data or quickly clear the memory.
Description of the 'Format Storage' screen: The screen shows options like: Format Storage, Format SD Card, Format internal memory (fast), Format internal memory (secure).
- Select Storage Management from the main menu.
- Select Format Memory Card.
- Select Format Internal Memory (Secure).
- Confirm the process.
Note:
- During simple formatting, only the directory is deleted, and existing files can no longer be accessed directly. With appropriate software, data can be accessed again. Only data intended for new storage will be permanently deleted. To permanently delete all images, image fragments, and personal data, you must select Internal Memory Format (Secure) in the erase process. This process can take up to 75 minutes.
- If the memory card was formatted on another device, such as a computer, it must be formatted again in the camera.
- For Leica M11-D, secure erase can only be performed via the Leica FOTOS app.
