DOD FX86B Death Metal Distortion
What the FX86B Does
The FX86B creates a grinding wall of noise perfect for harmonic corruption. It emulates the death metal and grindcore sounds of bands like Napalm Death, Carcass, Brutal Truth, and Pungent Stench. A key feature is its ability to oscillate when the R.I.P. (LEVEL) control is turned up, allowing oscillation at any amp volume. The distortion level is fixed; there is no separate distortion control.
Connecting the FX86B
Connect your guitar to the input of the FX86B. Connect the output of the FX86B to your amplifier or another effects device. To eliminate the need for a 9-volt battery, attach the DOD PS200R power supply to the AC adapter jack.
Features
- LED indicator shows status of effect and battery condition.
- Active switching for noiseless operation.
- Easy access battery compartment.
- Adapter jack for AC operation.
- Rugged die-cast metal case.
- Three year limited warranty.
- Rubber non-skid bottom.
Controls
- R.I.P. (LEVEL)
- Matches the distortion level with the original signal level. Turning this control clockwise may cause some varieties of cats to gather and fight with one another. Turning the control counterclockwise can be useful for a little midnight thrashing to avoid an encounter with large numbers of law enforcement personnel.
- GUTS (LOW)
- Controls the low end of the distortion sound. Turn it up to make your speakers groan.
- PAIN (MID)
- Controls the mid frequencies of the distortion. Turning it down makes the low end a monster. Turn it up and you will begin to feel the PAIN!
- SCREAM (HIGH)
- Controls the amount of high end on the distortion. Turn it up for brutal chainsaw pick attack! DOD will not be held responsible for any damage caused by those “formally dead” who are suddenly awakened by the FX86B.
- FOOTSWITCH
- Switches the distortion effect in or out of the signal path.
- LED INDICATOR
- Lights when the distortion is enabled, and is not lit when the distortion is bypassed.
- JACKS
- Input, Output, AC Adapter (use the DOD PS200R power supply to eliminate the need for a 9 volt battery).
Operation of the FX86B
The FX86B is a high-gain effect designed to rattle bones. It features three EQ controls: GUTS (LOW), PAIN (MID), and SCREAM (HIGH). Alternate guitar or bass tunings can enhance the sound; try tuning to C# (C#, F#, B, E, G#, C#) or C (C, F, Bb, Eb, G, C) for a meaner tone.
When setting up the effect, use the R.I.P. (LEVEL) control to match the level of the distortion effect with the level of the original input signal. The control should be set so that there is a slight increase in level when the effect is switched into the signal path.
The GUTS (LOW) knob controls the low-frequency (bass) content of the signal. Turning this control clockwise increases the low frequency content.
The SCREAM (HIGH) knob controls the high-frequency (treble) content of the guitar signal. This control adds more edge to your sound, allowing your guitar sound to shatter glass.
The PAIN (MID) knob controls the mid-frequencies and can make your skin crawl if turned up. When it’s turned down, it makes the GUTS (LOW) and SCREAM (HIGH) controls even more effective.
Examples of different sound settings are provided on the following pages, with graphic representations of knob settings. Use these as starting points to create your own sounds.
Example Sound Settings:
- Destroyer Sound: Dropped mids enhance bass and highs.
- Hard Sound: Slight drop in mids for instant impact.
- Wall of Noise: Ultra low end and blaring highs.
Important Notes
- The FX86B battery is in use whenever the INPUT jack is plugged in. Unplug the cable from the INPUT jack when not in use to prevent unnecessary battery drain.
- Remove the battery when the unit is not going to be used for an extended period to prevent possible damage from leaking battery fluids.
- If the FX86B fails to switch in or out, or the LED indicator stays lit, the battery needs to be replaced.
- Use of any AC adapter other than the DOD PS200R will void the warranty of this product.
- Unauthorized repair of the FX86B will void the warranty. For service, contact your DOD FX pedal dealer for return/repair information.
