Grundig Sonoclock 590 & 590 Q Clock Radio

For a good reason

Safety and Configuration

  • This device is designed for audio signal reproduction. Its use for other purposes is strictly prohibited.
  • Keep the device away from moisture (water splashes). Do not place containers with liquids (vases, etc.) on the device. These containers could tip over, and the resulting liquid spillage could damage the electrical system.
  • Do not place objects that produce an open flame, such as candles, on the device.
  • Ensure the device is adequately ventilated. Do not obstruct ventilation slots with newspapers, tablecloths, curtains, etc.
  • When installing your device, consider that most furniture is covered with varnish, paint, or plastic materials, and these coatings contain chemical additives. These additives can, among other things, attack the material of your device's feet and leave indelible or difficult-to-remove marks on the furniture.
  • Do not use detergents, as they could damage the casing. Clean the device with a clean, damp chamois leather.
  • Do not expose the backup battery to extreme heat caused by, for example, sunlight, heaters, fire, etc.
  • Never open the device casing. No warranty claims will be accepted for damage caused by improper handling.
  • The rating plate is located on the underside of the device.
  • Please note that prolonged listening at excessive volumes with headphones ? can affect your hearing ability.

Controls on the Top Panel

  • SLEEP: Activates the programmed stop timer. To display the current programmed stop timer setting.
  • TIME: Press and hold to set the time.
  • ALARM: Press and hold to set the alarm time. Short press: displays the alarm time.
  • SNOOZE: Interrupts the alarm function. Displays the seconds.
  • [Power Button] (AL OFF): Puts the radio into standby mode; stops the alarm function for the current day; deactivates the programmed stop timer.

Controls on the Left Side

  • [Alarm Selector] (AL OFF): Switches the alarm between a signal (?) and radio (▶️), and cancels the alarm.
  • - TUNING +: To tune radio stations.
  • FM MW: Selector for FM and MW (AM) wavebands.

Controls on the Right Side

  • + VOLUME -: Adjusts the volume.
  • AL 1 1+2 2: Selector, switches between alarm time 1 or 2; activates alarm time 1 or 2 or 1+2.
  • [Headphone Jack] ?: Female jack for connecting stereo headphones with a jack plug (ø 3.5 mm). The device's loudspeaker is automatically deactivated.

Controls on the Back Panel

  • [Power Cable]: Mains cable.
  • [Antenna]: Cable antenna for FM reception. For reception on medium waves (MW), the device has a built-in antenna. To orient the antenna, please rotate the device on its axis.

Controls on the Underside

  • [Battery Compartment]: Compartment for 9V backup battery.

Displays

  • [Ambient Sensor] ?: Automatic brightness sensor.
  • AL 1: Indicates that alarm time 1 is activated.
  • AL 2: Indicates that alarm time 2 is activated.
  • 10:00: Indicates the time, alarm time, and programmed stop time.
  • FM 88 108 MHz / MW 520 1600 KHz: Indicates the frequency of the selected radio station on the frequency scale.
  • [Radio On Indicator] ▶️: Indicates that the radio is on.

Power Supply

Mains Operation

  • Check that the mains voltage indicated on the rating plate (located on the underside of the device) corresponds to your local mains voltage. If not, please contact your specialized dealer.
  • 1. Insert the mains cable plug into your mains socket (230V~, 50 Hz Sonoclock 590, 230V~, 50/60 Hz Sonoclock 590 Q).

Caution:

  • The device is connected to the mains via the mains plug. To completely disconnect the device from the mains, you must remove the mains plug from the socket!
  • Using the mains plug, you disconnect the device from the mains. Therefore, ensure that the mains plug is accessible during operation: no object should block its access.

Installing the Backup Battery

  • When the device is connected to the mains, the backup battery prevents stored settings from being erased in case of a power failure or if you briefly unplug the cable.
  • 1. To open the battery compartment, press the areas marked with arrows as shown in the diagram and push the cover downwards.
  • 2. When inserting the battery (type 9 V, 6LF 22) into the compartment, observe the polarity indicated at the bottom of the compartment.
  • 3. Close the battery compartment.

Note:

  • Remove the backup battery when the device will not be used for an extended period.
  • Do not dispose of batteries in household waste, even if they do not contain heavy metals. Respect environmental protection by, for example, depositing used batteries ♻️ at a designated collection point.

Settings

Setting the Clock

The first time you put the device into operation, the time display will flash, indicating that you need to set the time. The same applies if you have not installed a backup battery, after power failures, or if the device has been unplugged.

The time displayed by the Sonoclock 590 will be synchronized by the mains frequency, and for the Sonoclock 590Q, it is controlled by an integrated quartz crystal.

  1. Press and hold the 'TIME' button.
  2. Press 'UP' (and hold) to set the clock to advance quickly; OR press 'DOWN' (and hold) to set the clock to advance slowly.
  3. Release 'TIME' to finish setting.

Note: Using the 'SNOOZE' option (press and hold), display the seconds (e.g., time '12:15' and 20 seconds, display: '5:20').

Setting the Alarm Time

  1. Using the 'AL OFF' selector, set the desired alarm time (▶️ = radio station, ? = signal).
  2. When the alarm clock is off, push the 'AL 1 1+2 2' selector towards '1' or '2'. Display: The indicator light for selector 'AL 1' or 'AL 2' lights up.
  3. Press and hold the 'ALARM' button.
  4. Press the 'DOWN' button (and hold) to set the alarm time to advance slowly; OR press the 'UP' button (and hold) to set the alarm time to advance quickly.
  5. Release 'ALARM' to finish setting. – The device will wake you at the programmed time with the chosen alarm signal.

Operation

Switching On and Off

  1. Press 'RADIO ON' to turn on the radio.
  2. Press '⏻' to switch off (standby) the device.

Radio Function

For perfect FM reception, simply orient the cable antenna correctly.

Tuning Radio Stations

  1. Select your desired waveband using the 'FM MW' selector.
  2. Select your desired station by turning the '- TUNING +' knob.

Adjusting the Volume

  1. Adjust the volume to your preference using the '+ VOLUME -' button.

Automatic Brightness Control

Your device features an option that automatically adjusts the display brightness.

Alarm Function

Selecting Alarm Times

The alarm function (? or ▶️) must be activated.

  1. Push the 'AL 1 1+2 2' selector towards '1' or '2'. Display: The indicator light for selector 'AL 1' or 'AL 2' lights up; OR activate both alarm times by setting the 'AL 1 1+2 2' selector to the '1+2' position. - Display: The indicator lights for selectors 'AL 1' and 'AL 2' light up.

Displaying Alarm Times

Depending on the setting ('AL 1' or 'AL 2'), alarm time 1 or alarm time 2 is displayed.

  1. Press and hold the 'ALARM' option. Display: The last programmed alarm time.
  2. Release the 'ALARM' option to finish displaying the alarm time. Display: The current time.

Note: If the 'AL 1 1+2 2' selector is set to '1+2', the alarm times cannot be displayed.

Radio Alarm

  1. Press 'RADIO ON' to turn on the radio.
  2. Select your desired waveband using the 'FM MW' selector.
  3. Select your desired station by turning the '- TUNING +' knob.
  4. Set the required alarm volume using the '+ VOLUME -' option.
  5. Select the alarm signal (▶️) using the 'AL OFF' selector. The device turns on the radio at the set times (alarm signal duration: 59 minutes).

Buzzer Alarm

  1. Set the alarm signal (?) using the 'AL OFF' selector. The device will wake you with a buzzer at the programmed time with the alarm signal (alarm signal duration: 59 minutes).

Interrupting the Alarm Function

  1. Press 'SNOOZE' while the alarm function is active.
  • The alarm signal (buzzer or radio) stops.
  • The alarm signal will resume after a 6-minute interval (alarm signal duration: 59 minutes).

Stopping the Alarm Function for the Current Day

  1. During the alarm, press '⏻'. The alarm signal (buzzer or radio) stops, but the alarm function remains active for the next day at the programmed time.

Ending / Deactivating the Alarm Function

  1. To end the alarm function, set the 'AL OFF' selector to 'AL OFF' (standby). Display: The indicator lights for selectors 'AL 1' and 'AL 2' turn off. The set alarm times are memorized.
  2. To activate the alarm function, move the 'AL OFF' selector from 'AL OFF' (standby) to ? or ▶️. Display: The indicator lights for selectors 'AL 1' and 'AL 2' light up.

Sleep Timer Function

The device has a sleep timer function, which automatically turns off the radio after the programmed duration has elapsed. This duration can range from 0 minutes (off) to 59 minutes.

Setting the Sleep Timer

  1. Turn on the device by pressing 'SLEEP'. Display: The duration '0:59' (59 minutes) after which the device will turn off. You will hear the selected station.
  2. To set the desired operating duration, press and hold the 'SLEEP' button.
  3. Use the 'DOWN' option (and hold) to set the stop time slowly; OR press the 'UP' button (and hold) to set the stop time quickly.

Note: If only the 'SLEEP' option is pressed for more than 3 seconds, the remaining stop time decreases in 1-minute intervals.

  1. To finish setting, release the 'SLEEP' button. After the programmed duration elapses, the device will automatically turn off.

Deactivating the Sleep Timer

  1. To prematurely deactivate the Sleep Timer function, press '⏻'; OR use the 'DOWN' option (and hold) to set the stop time to '0'. The device turns off (standby).

Headphone Connection

  1. Insert the headphone jack (ø 3.5 mm) into the ? socket of the device. The device's loudspeaker is deactivated.

Caution: Listening at excessively high volumes with headphones or earphones can lead to hearing impairment.

Information

Environmental Note

Consequently, it is advisable not to dispose of this device or its batteries in household waste at the end of its life. Instead, take it to a collection center for recycling of its electrical and electronic components.
