Tuning SSB (Single Side Band)

SSB allows two-way communication on shortwave, used for amateur radio, Morse code, weather-fax, and utility signals. The Internet and local libraries are resources for learning more.

To experiment with SSB: Tune to the desired band (e.g., 20-meter Amateur band by entering 14150 KHz and pressing AM). Press the SSB button twice (do not select SYNC). SSB will appear on the display with USB or LSB to the right. Select upper sideband (USB) or lower sideband (LSB) by pressing the U/LSB button. Set the FINE tuning knob to its center position. Set the sensitivity switch to DX. Extend the antenna and slowly tune from 14150 to 14350 KHz, listening for voice signals. Use the tuning knob for coarse tuning and the FINE+ knob for fine-tuning.

This SSB circuit tunes both upper and lower sideband signals. For clarity with strong SSB signals, placing the DX/LOCAL switch in the LOCAL position (down) may be beneficial.

Using the DX/LOCAL Switch

This switch (left side panel) adjusts sensitivity. Use DX (up) for maximum sensitivity. If strong stations or SSB signals are distorted, use LOCAL (down). This switch does not function in FM mode.

Using the Synchronous Detector

The synchronous detector can improve signal quality and minimize interference when listening to AM and shortwave broadcast stations. Press the SYNC button while listening to a station. SYNC appears on the display with USB or LSB. You can sync on either sideband by pressing the U/LSB button. Turn off the synchronous detector when tuning stations or when not needed. Using the WIDE/NARROW button may also help. This feature does not always minimize interference.

Wide/Narrow Switch

Located on the right side under the TUNE knob, this selectivity switch allows you to choose WIDE for best audio fidelity when there's no adjacent frequency interference, or NAR to reduce interference at the cost of audio fidelity.

Tuning and Stations

Tuning In Stations

Stations can be tuned using the △▽ buttons, the Tuning Knob, Direct Frequency Entry, and Auto-Search. Quick presses of the △▽ buttons tune up or down frequency. Continuous tuning in shortwave is only possible with the tuning knob or direct entry.

Direct Frequency Entry

Use this method when the desired frequency is known. Enter AM, LW, SW, and Air Band frequencies in Kilohertz (KHz), e.g., 810 KHz or 9475 KHz. Enter FM frequencies in Megahertz (MHz), e.g., 102.9 MHz (ignore the decimal point). Note: Aircraft frequencies are entered in KHz (e.g., 120100 KHz) but are often given in MHz (e.g., 120.1 MHz).

  1. Use the numeric buttons to enter the frequency.
  2. Within 3 seconds, press the AM button for AM, LW, or SW frequencies, or the FM button for FM and Air Band frequencies.

Auto-Search Tuning

With the G3 on, press the up or down frequency button (△▽) for about 2 seconds to start auto-search. The G3 has three modes: STOP, ATS, or DELAY-5. The factory default is STOP.

For shortwave auto-searching, set the bandwidth switch to WIDE. Auto search is not recommended for SSB signals.

Auto-Search Tuning (ATS - Auto Tuning Storage)

ATS automatically stores the strongest FM local stations into memory, starting from page 99 downwards. After an ATS scan, select your memory using the △▽ buttons and the station with the F1-7 buttons. If too many memories are filled with static, try scanning again with the DX/LOCAL switch set to LOCAL (down).

To select an auto-search mode:

  1. With the radio turned off, hold down the F6 button for about 2 seconds, then release. The last chosen mode will flash.
