About INSTEON Thermostat

Installation

  1. Do not remove wires from existing thermostat until instructed to do so.
  2. If you have A/C, turn off A/C breaker. Confirm A/C is off by turning on air and observing that the compressor/fan does not come on.
  3. Turn off breaker/fuse to furnace. If thermostat has no power, proceed to step 4. Try to turn on heat. If it does not come on, proceed to step 4. Otherwise, turn off heat and wait until furnace fan stops. Turn off other breakers until heat no longer runs.
  4. Remove the thermostat cover to gain access to wires (this may require detaching it from the wall).
  5. If necessary, take a photo of the wiring connections to help with reconnections.
  6. If possible, while still connected, attach a "C" label to the wire connected to the "C" terminal on the thermostat.
  7. Disconnect your C wire from the thermostat. Label the wire if necessary.
  8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 for all remaining wires.
  9. Remove the existing thermostat backplate from the wall.
  10. Remove 3 inches of the outer jacket covering the bundle of wires. This jacket cannot remain inside the INSTEON Thermostat or the device may malfunction. If you cannot get the individual wires to extend 3 inches beyond the outer jacket, you will need to splice on extension wires.
  11. Slide the wires (but not the outer jacket) through the black draft shield grommet.
  12. Mount the INSTEON Thermostat to the wall.
  13. Insert the C wire into terminal C and tighten.
  14. Repeat for other wires, matching terminal designations.
  15. Close the front of the INSTEON Thermostat onto the back mounting plate until you hear a click.
  16. Turn on the breaker(s).
  17. After a few seconds, the INSTEON Thermostat will display the ambient temperature.

If the INSTEON Thermostat displays a two-digit error code, open the unit and tap the reset button. Close the unit and wait a few seconds as it restarts. If a problem persists, call the INSTEON Support Line at 866-243-8022.

Diagram Description: The diagram shows a wire bundle from the main HVAC unit entering the wall and connecting to terminals on the thermostat backplate. The terminals are labeled C, R, W, Y, G, etc.
