About INSTEON Wireless Thermostat
The INSTEON Wireless Thermostat is a wireless, battery-operated, one-day programmable, INSTEON-compatible thermostat. It includes a humidity sensor and communicates wirelessly via radio frequency (RF) to other INSTEON devices. It is not directly wired to the HVAC system; instead, it communicates with an INSTEON Thermostat that is connected to the HVAC system. It can also function as a standalone INSTEON controller for other devices like heaters and fans, activated by room temperature status. Additional INSTEON Wireless Thermostats can be added to create extra temperature zones.

INSTEON Wireless Thermostat Button Overview
The thermostat features several buttons for operation and programming:
- Up/Down Arrows (1): Adjust the temperature setpoint based on the current mode.
- Mode Button (2): Selects the HVAC system's operational mode (Off, Heat, Cool, Auto, Programmed Auto).
- Energy Button (3): Activates an energy-saving mode, setting back the temperature by a default of 4°. This offset can be changed using software like HouseLinc.
- Hold Button (4): Overrides a pre-programmed mode.
- Fan Button (5): Cycles between Auto and Always On fan modes.
- Master Button (6): Designates this thermostat as the master temperature controller when linked to an INSTEON Thermostat.
- Time/Sensor Button (7): Sets the date, time, and clock format (12/24-hour).
- Program Button (8): Configures pre-programmed user modes (Wake, Leave, Return, Sleep).
- Set Button (9): Adds or removes the thermostat from INSTEON scenes.
The display shows:

INSTEON Wireless Thermostat Operation and Programming
Mode Button Operation
Pressing the Mode button cycles through the following operational modes:
- Off Mode: No setpoints are displayed, and Up/Down arrows have no function.
- Heat Mode: Displays only the Heat setpoint. Up/Down arrows adjust the Heat setpoint.
- Cool Mode: Displays only the Cool setpoint. Up/Down arrows adjust the Cool setpoint.
- Auto Mode: Displays both Cool and Heat setpoints. Up/Down arrows increase or decrease both values by the same amount.
- Programmed Auto Mode: Indicates the program mode is active. Both Cool and Heat setpoints are shown, and Up/Down arrows adjust them by the same amount. Setpoints adjust automatically for the next time period.
Note on Auto Mode Setpoint Gap: To adjust the gap between Heat and Cool setpoints in Auto mode, select Heat, set its temperature, then select Cool and set its temperature. Returning to Auto mode will reflect these changes. If Heat and Cool setpoints are identical, Heat will automatically adjust down by 2°.
Energy Button Operation
The Energy button (leaf icon) initiates an energy-saving mode by adjusting Heat and Cool setpoints by a specified value (default 4°). This setting can be modified via home control software. The unit remains in Energy mode until the button is pressed again. Up/Down arrows adjust the setpoint within the current mode.
- From Off Mode: The Energy button has no effect as the system is already in maximum energy savings.
- From Heat Mode: Applies a heat setback, typically 4° lower than the current setting. The display may show "Heating" when active.
- From Cool Mode: Applies a cool setback, typically 4° higher than the current setting.
- From Auto Mode: Adjusts both Heat and Cool setpoints, typically 4° more for Cooling and 4° less for Heating. The display may show "Heating" or "Cooling" when active.
Note: On-screen text displaying “Heat” changes to “Heating” and “Cool” changes to “Cooling” to indicate the HVAC system is active.
Set Button Operation
The Set button is used to add or remove the INSTEON Wireless Thermostat from INSTEON scenes, functioning similarly to the Set button on other INSTEON devices.
Time/Sensor Button Operations
The Time/Sensor button allows setting the time and clock format (12/24-hour). It cycles through hour, minute, and format settings. Up/Down arrows adjust values. Pressing the button again moves to the next setting. Setup exits after 4 minutes of inactivity or by pressing the Mode button. If the thermostat is added to a scene with an INSTEON Thermostat, it retrieves time settings automatically.
Note: Blinking elements indicate the setting being adjusted.
- First press: Adjusts hours (1-hour increments).
- Second press: Adjusts minutes (1-minute increments).
- Third press: Selects clock format (12- or 24-hour). AM/PM is not displayed in 24-hour format.
IMPORTANT: When added as a wireless temperature zone to an INSTEON Thermostat, the Time/Sensor button primarily adjusts time format, with time information provided by the INSTEON Thermostat.
Program Button Operation
The Program button configures pre-programmed modes (Wake, Leave, Return, Sleep). Pressing Program again moves to the next step. Setup exits after 4 minutes of inactivity or by pressing the Mode button.
IMPORTANT: When added as a wireless temperature zone to an INSTEON Thermostat, the Program button is disabled; all programming is done on the INSTEON Thermostat.
- First press: Selects pre-program modes (Wake, Leave, Return, Sleep).
- Second press: Sets the start time for the selected mode (15-minute increments).
- Third press: Sets the Cool setpoint.
- Fourth press: Sets the Heat setpoint.
- Fifth press: Restarts the process for another mode/day.
The default preprogrammed settings for all days are:

Note: To exit program setup mode, press the Mode button once.
Fan and Hold Button Operations
- Fan Button: Cycles between Auto and Always On fan modes. The display shows "Fan Always" when selected.
- Hold Button: Overrides a pre-programmed mode until Hold is turned off. While Hold is active, preprogrammed time notations (Wake, Leave, Return, Sleep) are not shown, and the next scheduled time change is ignored. Hold can be remotely controlled by an INSTEON controller.
Master Button Operation
Pressing and holding the Master button for 3 seconds designates the INSTEON Wireless Thermostat as the master temperature controller when linked to an INSTEON Thermostat. The device will beep once upon successful activation. Before pressing, a remote sensor may be the master; after pressing, the local INSTEON Wireless Thermostat becomes the master. This function is only valid if linked to an INSTEON Thermostat and requires an INSTEON scene to be programmed.
Installation
CAUTIONS AND WARNINGS
Read and understand these instructions before installing and retain them for future reference.
Tools Needed
- INSTEON Wireless Thermostat is primarily used as a tabletop thermostat.
- Wall-mounting is possible using the slotted holes in the back cover (screws and anchors not provided).
Preparation
Follow these steps for proper installation:
- Select a location not affected by daily sun movement or direct HVAC vent/fan airflow.
- Insert 2 AA batteries into the thermostat.
- Close the thermostat cover. The display will show ambient temperature and humidity. The mode defaults to OFF, the battery segment shows full, and the time defaults to 12:00PM.
- Snap the thermostat into the tabletop stand or mount it to a wall.
Test Operation
The INSTEON Wireless Thermostat communicates wirelessly to an INSTEON Thermostat that controls the HVAC system. Before adding it as a responder or controller, perform these tests to familiarize yourself with its standalone operation. Note that during testing, display changes occur, but no HVAC operations will take place. The thermostat has a default 5-minute delay between AC compressor cycles.
- Heating Mode Test: Press Mode to enter Heat mode. Use Up/Down arrows to set a temperature 1° above ambient. The display will show "Heating."
- Cooling Mode Test: Press Mode to enter Cool mode. Use Up/Down arrows to set a temperature 1° below ambient. The display will show "Cooling."
- Auto Mode Test: Press Mode to enter Auto mode. Use Up/Down arrows to adjust Heat and Cool setpoints (minimum 2° gap recommended). Press Mode again to enter Programmed Auto mode, indicated by "Auto" and the time. Press Mode twice to return to Off mode.
Adding INSTEON Wireless Thermostat
The INSTEON Wireless Thermostat can be added to an INSTEON Thermostat to provide portable temperature control. Up to 2 INSTEON Wireless Thermostats can be added to a single INSTEON Thermostat.
INSTEON Programming
Add INSTEON Wireless Thermostat as a Controller
The INSTEON Wireless Thermostat can be configured to control other INSTEON devices or trigger events based on changes. It can be configured as a controller for:
- Group 1: Cooling mode change (scene control)
- Group 2: Heating mode change (scene control)
- Group 3: Dehumidification, high humidity setpoint (scene control)
- Group 4: Humidification, low humidity setpoint (scene control)
- Group FE: Broadcast on any change (notification for software controllers)
When added as a controller to an INSTEON Thermostat, setpoints are matched. Otherwise, setpoints are local. Humidity levels are taken from the local device only.
- Press and hold the INSTEON Wireless Thermostat Set button until it beeps.
- Tap Up or Down arrows to select Groups 1-4 to add to a scene.
- Adjust the scene responder (e.g., a humidifier) to the desired state.
- Press and hold the responder's Set button until it double-beeps or its LED flashes. The INSTEON Wireless Thermostat will double-beep upon completion.
- Confirm scene addition by adjusting the INSTEON Wireless Thermostat setpoint; the responder should toggle between its scene states.
- Repeat steps 1-5 for each additional responder.
Upon entering Scene mode, the display shows the scene number for approximately 2 seconds.
Remove INSTEON Wireless Thermostat as a Controller
To remove the INSTEON Wireless Thermostat from a scene as a controller, follow these instructions. It is recommended to use software for managing scene memberships. Ensure scene memberships are removed from all responders.
- Press and hold the INSTEON Wireless Thermostat Set button until it beeps (Set LED blinks green).
- Press and hold the INSTEON Wireless Thermostat Set button again to enter scene mode (Set LED blinks red).
- Tap Up and Down arrows to select the group from which you are removing the scene (Group 1-4).
- Press and hold the responder's Set button. The INSTEON Wireless Thermostat will double-beep upon completion, and the LED will turn off.
The display indicates the group being removed from the scene.
User Setup Mode Overview
IMPORTANT: When the INSTEON Wireless Thermostat is added as a wireless temperature zone to an INSTEON Thermostat, the Program and Time/Sensor buttons lose their primary functions. All programming and time controls are then managed by the INSTEON Thermostat. To regain full functionality of the Program and Time/Sensor buttons, the INSTEON Wireless Thermostat must be removed from the INSTEON Thermostat. The Program and Time/Sensor buttons can still be used to wake the thermostat from battery-saving mode to retrieve updates.
User Setup Mode
Press and hold the Program button for 3 seconds or more to enter User Setup Mode.
Navigation:
- Press Mode to step between menu items (sub-mode number appears on screen).
- Press Up or Down arrows to change a setting.
- Press and hold Program button to exit.
Available Sub-modes:
- Sub-mode 01: Display LED on-time select. Default is 10 seconds. Options: OFF, 10 seconds, 60 seconds, ON. (Note: Setting to ON drains batteries rapidly).
- Sub-mode 02: Humidity low setpoint (humidification). Default is 30%. Range: 0 to 79%.
- Sub-mode 03: Humidity high setpoint (dehumidification). Default is 99%. Range: 20 to 99%.
- Sub-mode 04: Temperature format select. Default is Fahrenheit (F). Options: Celsius (C) or Fahrenheit (F).
- Sub-mode 05: Internal or External temperature sensor. Default is Internal. Options: Internal or External.
- Sub-mode 06: Beep on button press. Default is Off. Options: ON or OFF.
- Sub-mode 07: Button lock. Default is Off.
- Sub-mode 08: Programming lockout. Default is Off.
- Sub-mode 09: Activation delay. Default is 5 minutes.
Temperature and Humidity Calibration Modes
Use a calibrated temperature or humidity source for adjustments.
- Press and hold the Program button.
- Tap Time/Sensor to enter Temperature Calibration Mode.
- Tap Mode to cycle through Internal Temperature Calibration (I), Humidity Calibration, and External Temperature Calibration (E).
Internal Temperature Calibration
The screen displays the current reading (left number) and the current offset (right number). Adjust the displayed temperature using Up/Down arrows to match the calibrated source. Each press changes the reading by 1° F (0.5° C). The offset range is -10 to +10.
Humidity Calibration Mode
After entering Setup Mode for temperature calibration, tap Mode to switch to humidity calibration. Use Up/Down arrows to adjust the current humidity level. Each press changes the reading by 1%. The offset range is -10 to +10.
External Temperature Calibration
If using a Waterproof Temperature Sensor, use this mode to calibrate its readings. Adjust the displayed temperature using Up/Down arrows to match the calibrated source. Each press changes the reading by 1° F (0.5° C). The offset range is -10 to +10.
Press Program to exit calibration mode.
Advanced 2-Stage Heating or Cooling Systems
The INSTEON Wireless Thermostat does not directly control 2-stage HVAC operations but instructs the INSTEON Thermostat. 2-stage operation engages under specific conditions when the INSTEON Thermostat is connected to the HVAC:
- When the setpoint is 5° or more below ambient in Cool mode, or 5° or more above ambient in Heat mode.
- When the INSTEON Thermostat has been active in Heat or Cool for over 10 minutes without reaching the setpoint.
Second stage may occasionally engage and disengage based on variable conditions.
Factory Reset
Resetting the thermostat to factory defaults removes all scene memberships, resets the day/time to 12:00PM, and restores programming times, temperatures, and other settings. Temperature and humidity offsets are not changed.
Factory Reset Method 1
- Open the thermostat and remove a battery.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- While pressing and holding the Set button, reinsert the battery. Do not release the Set button. The device will blink all segments and emit a long beep for about 10 seconds.
- Release the Set button when blinking/beeping stops. The device performs self-tests and returns to normal operation.
- If a two-digit error code appears, remove batteries, wait, and reinstall. Contact INSTEON Support if the issue persists.
Factory Reset Method 2
- Press and hold the INSTEON Wireless Thermostat Set button until it beeps (Set LED blinks green).
- Press and hold the INSTEON Wireless Thermostat Set button again until it beeps (Set LED blinks red). The display shows the group being removed from the scene.
- Double-tap the Set button.
- Press and hold the Set button again. The device will blink all segments and emit a long beep.
- Release the Set button when blinking/beeping stops. The device performs self-tests and returns to normal operation.
- If a two-digit error code appears, remove batteries, wait, and reinstall. Contact INSTEON Support if the issue persists.

This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules and Industry Canada license-exempt RSS-210. Operation is subject to two conditions: (1) it may not cause harmful interference, and (2) it must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.
The digital circuitry has been tested and found to comply with Class B digital device limits per FCC Rules, designed for reasonable protection against harmful interference.
