VTech DM226/DM226-2 Safe & Sound Digital Audio Monitor User Manual
Welcome to your new VTech Safe & Sound Digital Audio Monitor. This manual provides all the necessary information for installation, operation, and troubleshooting.
Getting Started
What's in the Box
The package typically includes one or two parent units and one baby unit, along with power adapters and a battery pack for the parent unit. Specific contents may vary (e.g., 1 set for DM226, 2 sets for DM226-2).
Install the Battery
The parent unit operates on a rechargeable battery or AC power. For continuous monitoring, use both simultaneously. The battery alone provides short-term cordless operation.
Notes: Use only the supplied battery pack (BT186692, 2.4V 400mAh Ni-MH). If the unit will not be used for an extended period, remove the battery to prevent leakage.
Installation: Ensure the battery pack is inserted with the 'THIS SIDE UP' marking facing upwards into the battery compartment on the parent unit. Warnings are provided against burning or puncturing batteries.
Replace the Battery
To replace the battery, pull out the battery compartment cover, lift out the old battery, and install the new one following the installation steps.
Connect and Charge the Battery
Connect the baby unit and parent unit to their respective AC power adapters and plug them into wall outlets. Ensure electrical outlets are not controlled by wall switches.
Notes: Use only the supplied power adapters. Keep all power adapter cords out of the reach of children.
Charge the Parent Unit Battery
Upon first connection and battery installation, the parent unit powers on automatically. The battery icon indicates the charging status. A full charge takes approximately 11 hours. Charging time is longer when the parent unit is on; turn it off for faster charging.
Battery Indicator | Status | Action |
---|---|---|
Icon is off | No battery installed or abnormal battery detected | Install the parent unit battery. Charge without interruption (at least 30 minutes). |
Screen displays LOW BATTERY and flashing light | Battery has very little charge | Charge without interruption (about 30 minutes). |
Battery icon becomes solid | Battery is fully charged | Connect to AC power when not in use to keep it charged. |
Before Use
Note: This baby monitor is intended as an aid and is not a substitute for proper adult supervision.
Test Your Baby Monitor
It is recommended to test the baby monitor before initial use and periodically thereafter. Ensure both units are powered on. Speak towards the baby unit's microphone; the sound should be heard on the parent unit, and visual sound indicators should light up.
Caution: For hearing protection, maintain a distance of at least 6.5 feet (2 meters) between the parent and baby units. If high-pitched noise occurs, move the parent unit further away or lower its volume.
Note: If the parent unit displays 'NOT LINKED' and flashes, move the parent unit closer to the baby unit (while maintaining the minimum distance) or check power connections.
Tip: If you cannot hear sounds from the baby unit, increase the parent unit's speaker volume.
Positioning the Baby Monitor
Caution: Keep the baby unit out of the baby's reach and never place it inside the baby’s crib or playpen.
- Place the baby unit more than 3 feet (1 meter) away from your baby.
- Place the parent unit more than 2 meters (6.5 feet) away from the baby unit.
Caution: If high-pitched screeching noise occurs, ensure units are more than 6.5 feet (2 meters) apart or turn down the parent unit's volume.
Operating Range: The monitor operates up to 1,000 feet (300 meters) outdoors or 160 feet (50 meters) indoors. Actual range may vary due to environmental conditions and obstructions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- Why does the baby monitor not respond normally? Try disconnecting power to both units, removing and reinstalling the parent unit batteries, waiting a few minutes, reconnecting power, and then turning both units on. Allow up to one minute for synchronization.
- Why doesn't the screen of the parent unit turn on? The rechargeable battery may be depleted, or the parent unit may not be connected to power. Connect the AC adapter to the parent unit and plug it into a wall socket.
- Why doesn't the POWER light of the baby unit turn on? The baby unit may not be connected to power. Connect the baby unit to its AC adapter.
- Why does the baby monitor produce a high-pitched noise? The units might be too close to each other. Ensure the parent unit and baby unit are more than 6.5 feet (2 meters) apart.
- Why does the parent unit react too quickly to other sounds? The baby unit may be detecting ambient sounds. Adjust the VOX sensitivity level to a lower setting or lower the speaker volume on the parent unit.
- Why don't I hear a sound or my baby cry? The parent unit's volume may be set too low. Press the Volume Up button. You might also have set a low VOX sensitivity level; adjust this setting as described in the VOX sensitivity section.
- Why does the parent unit beep? The sound alert feature may be enabled, and sound has been detected from the baby unit. Alternatively, the baby unit might be out of range, or the parent unit's battery may have insufficient charge.
- Why can't I establish a connection, or why is the connection lost intermittently? The baby unit may be out of range. Move the parent unit closer to the baby unit, maintaining at least 6.5 feet (2 meters) distance. Other electronic products can cause interference; try placing your monitor further away from devices like wireless routers, cellular telephones, and computers.
