SEIKO Solar-Powered Watches
Calibers V110, V111, V114, V115, V116, V117, V137, V145, V147, V157, V158, V181, V182, V187
Properties
- Solar-powered: Operates using light energy converted into electrical energy.
- No Battery Replacement Needed: Unlike conventional batteries, the rechargeable battery does not require replacement.
- Power Reserve: Maintains functionality for 2 to 12 months after a full charge, depending on the caliber.
- Early Warning Function: For certain calibers, the second hand moves at 2-second intervals when power is critically low.
- Instant Start Function: For certain calibers, the watch starts immediately when exposed to sufficient light.
- Anti-Overcharge Function: Prevents damage from overcharging.
Caliber Identification
Identify your watch's caliber number, which is typically a 4-digit number preceding the hyphen on the case back (e.g., V145-0A00).
How to Charge and Start the Watch
If the watch has stopped or the power is very low, charge it sufficiently by exposing it to light.
- Charging Process: Place the watch under direct sunlight or strong artificial light.
- Instant Start Function: When exposed to sunlight or strong artificial light (over 1000 lux), the watch will start immediately. The second hand will move at 2-second intervals initially.
- Confirmation of Charging: Continue exposing the watch to light until the second hand moves at 1-second intervals, indicating sufficient charge.
- Post-Charge Setup: Once the watch has restarted after a full stop, set the date and time before wearing it.
Refer to the "Charging and Accuracy Guide" for detailed charging times.
Notes on Charging:
- If the second hand moves at 2-second intervals after exposure to light (indicating the instant start function), it means the rechargeable battery's stored energy is insufficient. The watch may stop if removed from light.
- It is not necessary to fully charge the watch every time, but ensure it is well-charged, especially for the initial charge.
Warning: Precautions During Charging
- Do not place the watch too close to light sources like camera flashes, spotlights, or incandescent lamps, as this can cause excessive temperature increase and damage internal components.
- When charging under sunlight, do not leave the watch on a car dashboard or similar locations where extreme heat can build up.
- Ensure the watch temperature does not exceed 50°C (122°F) during charging (for calibers V110, V145, V181, V182).
- Ensure the watch temperature does not exceed 60°C (140°F) during charging (for calibers V111, V114, V115, V116, V117, V137, V147, V157, V158, V187).
Setting Time and Calendar
Models with Two/Three Hands
- Pull out the crown to the first click.
- Turn the crown to set the desired time.
- Push the crown back to its normal position (for three-hand models, align with the time signal).
Models with Date
- Pull out the crown to the second click and set the date to one preceding the desired date.
- Pull out the crown to the second click when the second hand is at the 12 o'clock position.
- Turn the crown to set the desired date.
- Turn the crown to set the hour and minute hands to the desired time.
- Push the crown back to its normal position in accordance with the time signal.
Models with Day and Date
- Pull out the crown to the first click and set the day and date to one preceding the desired day and date.
- Pull out the crown to the second click when the second hand is at the 12 o'clock position.
- Turn the crown until the correct day of the week and date appear in their respective windows.
- Turn the crown to set the minute and hour hands to the desired time.
- Push the crown back to its normal position in accordance with the time signal.
Notes on Time Setting
- Do not set the date between 9:00 PM and 1:00 AM, as this may cause it to change incorrectly. If adjustment is necessary during this period, first set the time outside this range, set the date, and then reset the correct time.
- When setting the hour hand, ensure the AM/PM setting is correct. The date changes once every 24 hours. To determine AM/PM, advance the hands past the 12 o'clock position. If the date changes, it is AM. If it does not change, it is PM.
- When setting the minute hand, first set it 4-5 minutes past the desired time, then turn it back to the exact time.
- The date needs to be manually adjusted at the end of February and for months with 30 days.

Power Source and Early Warning
The watch operates by converting light into electrical energy. It cannot function correctly if there is insufficient energy. To ensure proper charging, place or store the watch in well-lit areas.
- If the watch stops or the second hand moves at 2-second intervals (on models with a second hand), charge the watch by exposing it to light.
- The charging time required varies by caliber. Check your watch's caliber number on the case back.
- It is recommended to charge the watch for the duration specified as 'B' (continuous operation time) to ensure stable operation.
Function of Early Warning of Power Depletion
If your watch has a second hand, when the energy stored in the rechargeable battery drops to a critically low level, the second hand will begin to move at 2-second intervals instead of the normal 1-second interval. (Note: Some calibers do not have this function.) The watch will continue to display the correct time even when the second hand moves at 2-second intervals.
In such cases, charge the watch as soon as possible by exposing it to light. Otherwise, the watch may stop approximately 3 days later. (Refer to "How to Charge and Start the Watch" for charging details.)
To Prevent Power Depletion
- When wearing the watch, ensure it is not covered by clothing.
- When the watch is not in use, place it in a brightly lit area for an extended period.
Power Source Memo
This watch uses a rechargeable battery, which differs from conventional silver-oxide batteries. Unlike disposable batteries (e.g., dry cell or button cells), this rechargeable battery can be used repeatedly through multiple charge and discharge cycles.
The efficiency of the rechargeable battery may gradually decrease due to various factors, such as prolonged use or operating conditions. Worn-out or contaminated mechanical parts, or degraded lubricants, can also shorten the recharge cycles. If the battery's efficiency decreases, the watch requires servicing.
Warning: Do not attempt to replace the rechargeable battery yourself. Battery replacement requires professional knowledge and skills. Please consult an authorized watch dealer for battery replacement.
Installing a conventional silver-oxide battery may cause overheating, potentially leading to sparks or fire.
How to Screw Lock Crown
(For models with a screw lock crown)
- To Unscrew the Crown: Turn the crown counter-clockwise. Then, pull the crown out to set the time/calendar.
- To Screw the Crown: With the crown in its normal position, turn it clockwise while pushing it inwards.
Rotating Bezel
(For models with a rotating bezel)
The rotating bezel can be used to indicate up to 60 minutes of elapsed time.
- Turn the rotating bezel to align its marker (e.g., a triangle or dot) with the minute hand.
- Read the time elapsed by observing the number on the bezel indicated by the minute hand.
Warning: On some models, the rotating bezel may only rotate counter-clockwise.
