When the Index Sleep Monitor is awake and connected to the Garmin Connect app, it syncs data with the app automatically on a regular basis. However, you can also sync the data manually at any time.
- Place the device near your paired phone.
- Open the Garmin Connect app. TIP: The app can be open or running in the background.
- Select ••• > Garmin Devices.
- Select your Index Sleep Monitor.

Sleep Tracking
The Index Sleep Monitor automatically recognizes sleep and tracks your movements during your usual sleep schedule. You can set your usual sleep schedule in the Garmin Connect app. Sleep statistics include total hours of sleep, sleep stages, movement during sleep, resting heart rate, Body Battery™ changes, and more. The Sleep Coach provides recommendations for your current sleep needs based on your sleep history, activity, and HRV status. You can view detailed sleep statistics and set your usual sleep schedule in your Garmin Connect account (Setting Your Usual Sleep Schedule, page 7).
For more information, visit: www.garmin.com/garmin-technology/health-science/sleep-tracking/.
Body Battery
The sleep monitor analyzes heart rate variability, sleep quality, and its individual stages to determine the change in your Body Battery level overnight. If you sleep well at night, the change in your Body Battery should be greatest. During the day, physical activity and stress gradually deplete it. Short naps or rest can slow the decline or even add a little energy. NOTE: If you are sick, consume alcohol, or are stressed, your Body Battery may not recharge overnight.
When you sync the monitor with your Garmin Connect account, you can view current Body Battery changes, long-term trends, and other details.
Pulse Oximeter
The Index Sleep Monitor monitors your blood oxygen saturation levels using a pulse oximeter. Blood oxygen level information can be valuable for understanding your overall health and assessing how your body adapts to altitude. The sensor measures oxygen levels by shining light onto your skin and measuring how much light the tissue absorbs. This value is referred to as SpO2.
In the Garmin Connect app, your pulse oximeter readings are displayed as an SpO2 percentage. In the app, you can view more details about your readings, trends over the past few days, and any variations in your measured percentages (Breathing Variations, page 10). For more information on the accuracy of the pulse oximeter, visit garmin.com/ataccuracy.
Tips for Inaccurate Pulse Oximeter Data
- Wash and thoroughly dry your arm before putting on the sensor.
- Wear the sensor on your heart level.
- Do not apply lotion, moisturizer, or insect repellent to the skin under the sensor.
- Be careful not to scratch the optical sensor on the back of the module.
Heart Rate Variability Status
The Index Sleep Monitor analyzes your heart rate variability (HRV) during sleep, which is the variation in time between consecutive heartbeats. Training, physical activity, sleep, nutrition, and healthy habits all affect HRV. HRV values can vary significantly depending on sex, age, and fitness level. A balanced HRV status may indicate positive health indicators, such as a good balance between training and recovery, better cardiovascular fitness, and stress resilience. An unbalanced or poor status may indicate fatigue, increased need for recovery, or higher stress. For best results, wear the sensor regularly during sleep. The sensor requires three weeks of consistent sleep data to display your HRV status.
When you sync the monitor with your Garmin Connect account, you can view your current status and trends for heart rate variability.
Status | Description |
---|---|
Balanced | Your 7-day average HRV is within your baseline range. |
Unbalanced | Your 7-day average HRV is higher or lower than your baseline. |
Low | Your 7-day average HRV is significantly lower than your baseline. |
Poor | Your average HRV values are significantly below the norm for your age. |
No Status | Not enough data available to create a 7-day average. |
Skin Temperature
The Index Sleep Monitor module includes a sensor that can track skin temperature changes during sleep. Skin temperature changes over time, for example, in relation to recent activity or the environment in which you sleep. Skin temperature can also reflect your overall body temperature and potentially alert you to the onset of illness. Track trends to help improve your sleep and health. TIP: For women, tracking skin temperature variations can help better determine menstrual cycle progression and ovulation. For more information, visit www.garmin.com/garmin-technology/health-science/womens-health/.
Your baseline skin temperature can be determined after three nights of wearing the sensor.
Breathing Variations
CAUTION: The Index Sleep Monitor is not a medical device and is not intended for diagnostic purposes or as a medical monitoring device. For more information on accuracy, visit garmin.com/ataccuracy.
The optical heart rate sensor in the Index Sleep Monitor features a pulse oximeter function that can measure your breathing variations overnight. Breathing variation information helps improve awareness of your sleep environment and overall health. Occasional or frequent breathing variations may be caused by your lifestyle or sleep environment. If you are concerned about your breathing variation levels, talk to your doctor.
In your Garmin Connect account, you can view more details about breathing variations, such as trends over several days.

Do not use chemical cleaners, solvents, or insect repellents, as they can damage plastic components and connectors. Do not store the device in places exposed to extreme temperatures, as this could damage it. Do not machine wash the module. The module is resistant to occasional rain or splashes of water. However, if you put the module in a washing machine or dryer, it could be damaged (Washing the Strap, page 13). Do not use sharp or abrasive objects to clean the module. Be careful not to scratch the sensor on the back of the module.
