Wearing the Index Sleep Monitor
While you sleep, the sleep monitor automatically tracks your movements and sleep habits. You can view your sleep statistics on your Garmin Connect account (Sleep Tracking, page 9).
- Unfold the sleep band.
- Form a loop with the band by passing it through the retaining bar 1.
- Place your arm through the loop and slide the device onto the upper part of your arm. The sleep band should be above your elbow.
- Bend your arm and secure the end of the band ② onto a hook-and-loop fastener section.
- If necessary, remove the sleep monitor from your arm and adjust it for a comfortable fit (Tips for Wearing the Sleep Monitor, page 4). TIP: Once you have adjusted the sleep monitor for a proper fit on your arm, you should be able to put it on and take it off without readjusting it each time.
- Position the module so it is on the outside or back of your arm.
Tips for Wearing the Sleep Monitor
ATTENTION: Some users may experience skin irritation after wearing the sleep monitor for extended periods, especially those with sensitive skin or allergies. If your skin becomes irritated, remove the sleep monitor and allow your skin time to heal. To prevent skin irritation, ensure your sleep monitor is clean and dry. Avoid overtightening it around your arm.
The Index Sleep Monitor band should be snug but comfortable on your arm.
REMARK: It may be easier to adjust the sleep monitor before putting it on.
- For larger arms, attach the hook-and-loop fastener closer to the retaining bar.
- After properly adjusting the sleep monitor, keep the fastener closed so you can put it on and take it off without additional adjustment.
- Verify that your sleep monitor is properly fitted to minimize discomfort during sleep.
- REMARK: Finding a comfortable fit for the band may take some time.
- Ensure the module pocket lies flat and without creases against your skin.
- Do not overtighten the sleep monitor on your arm.
Position the module pocket and retaining bar on the outside or back of your arm. TIP: You can adjust the module closer to the inside of your arm if it is more comfortable. Avoid tight clothing that could compress the sleep monitor. Wash the sleep monitor before wearing it for the first time (Machine Washing, page 13).

Sleep Tracking
While you sleep, the Index Sleep Monitor automatically records data about your sleep and tracks your movements during your usual sleep hours. You can set your sleep schedule in the Garmin Connect app. Sleep statistics include total sleep hours, sleep stages, sleep movements, resting heart rate, Body Battery™ changes, etc. Your sleep coach helps you determine your sleep needs based on your sleep and activity history and HRV status. You can view detailed sleep statistics and set your sleep schedule on your Garmin Connect account (Setting Your Sleep Schedule, page 7). For more information, visit www.garmin.com/garmin-technology/health-science/sleep-tracking/.
Body Battery
Your sleep monitor analyzes your heart rate variability, sleep quality, and sleep stages to determine your Body Battery change overnight. Expect the greatest Body Battery change after a good night's sleep. Activity and stress drain your energy throughout the day, while naps and rest can calm the game or even give you a boost.
REMARK: Illness, alcohol consumption, and stress may prevent you from fully recharging your Body Battery overnight.
Sync your sleep monitor with your Garmin Connect account to view your latest Body Battery changes, long-term trends, and additional details.
Pulse Oximeter
The Index Sleep Monitor is equipped with a pulse oximeter function that measures the oxygen saturation in your blood. Your blood oxygen level can help you better understand your overall health and whether your body is adapting well to altitude. Your sleep monitor assesses your blood oxygen level by emitting light through your skin and measuring the light absorbed. This measurement is called SpO2.
In your Garmin Connect app, pulse oximeter readings appear as a percentage of SpO2. Here, you can view additional details about your pulse oximeter readings, including multi-day trends, as well as any variations in your blood oxygen saturation (Respiration Variations, page 11). To learn more about pulse oximeter accuracy, visit garmin.com/ataccuracy.
Tips for Troubleshooting Pulse Oximeter Data
If your pulse oximeter data is unreliable or not displaying, you can use these tips:
- Clean and dry your arm before installing the sleep monitor.
- Wear the sleep monitor at heart level.
- Avoid applying sunscreen, lotions, or insect repellents under the sleep monitor.
- Be careful not to scratch the optical sensor on the back of the module.
Heart Rate Variability Status
Your Index Sleep Monitor analyzes your heart rate readings during sleep to determine your heart rate variability (HRV), which is the variation in time between heartbeats. Training, physical activity, sleep, diet, and healthy habits all impact your heart rate variability. HRV values can vary considerably based on sex, age, and fitness level. A balanced HRV status may indicate positive signs of health such as good training-rest balance, better cardiovascular fitness, and stress resilience. An unbalanced or poor status may be a sign of fatigue, increased recovery needs, or increased stress. For best results, wear the sleep monitor consistently while sleeping. The sleep monitor requires three weeks of consistent sleep data to display your heart rate variability status. Sync your sleep monitor with your Garmin Connect account to view your current heart rate variability status and associated trends.
Status | Description |
---|---|
Balanced | Your 7-day average HRV is within your reference range. |
Unbalanced | Your 7-day average HRV is above or below your reference range. |
Low | Your 7-day average HRV is well below your reference range. |
Poor | The average of your HRV values is well below the normal range for your age. |
No Status | Data is insufficient to generate a 7-day average. |
Skin Temperature
The module on the Index Sleep Monitor is equipped with a sensor designed to track variations in your skin temperature overnight. Your skin temperature changes over time, which can be related to your recent activity and sleep environment. Skin temperature can also be an indicator of changes in your overall body temperature, which may indicate illness. Observing trends can provide insights for improving your sleep and health.
TIP: For women, you can also use skin temperature variations to better track your menstrual cycle or ovulation. For more information, visit www.garmin.com/garmin-technology/health-science/womens-health/.
You must wear your sleep monitor for three nights to set your reference skin temperature.
Respiration Variations
ATTENTION: The Index Sleep Monitor is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose or monitor the progression of a disease of any kind. For more information on pulse oximeter accuracy, visit garmin.com/ataccuracy.
The heart rate optical sensor on the Index Sleep Monitor has a pulse oximeter function that can measure respiration variations during the night. You receive information on respiration variations to make you aware of your sleep environment and overall well-being. Occasional or frequent variations may be due to factors related to your lifestyle or sleep environment. If you have concerns about your respiration variations, talk to your doctor or health care provider.
In your Garmin Connect account, you can view more details about respiration variations, including multi-day trends.
