Tracking Sleep
While you sleep, the Index Sleep Monitor sleep strap automatically detects your sleep and tracks your movements during your typical sleep times. You can set your normal sleep schedule in the Garmin Connect app. Sleep statistics include total sleep hours, sleep stages, sleep movements, resting heart rate, Body Battery™ changes, and more. The sleep coach provides personalized sleep recommendations based on your sleep history and HRV status. You can view detailed sleep statistics and set your sleep schedule in your Garmin Connect account (see "Setting Your Sleep Schedule", page 7). For more information, visit www.garmin.com/garmin-technology/health-science/sleep-tracking/.
Body Battery
The sleep strap analyzes heart rate variability, sleep quality, and sleep stages to determine your Body Battery level overnight. Significant changes in Body Battery are expected after a good night's sleep. Activity and stress generally deplete your energy levels throughout the day, but periods of rest and calm moments can help prevent energy depletion or provide a small energy boost. Illness, alcohol consumption, and stress may prevent your Body Battery from fully recovering overnight. Sync your sleep strap with your Garmin Connect account to view your latest Body Battery changes, long-term trends, and additional information.
Pulse Oximeter
The Index Sleep Monitor sleep strap has a pulse oximeter function to measure your blood oxygen saturation levels. Knowing your blood oxygen saturation level can help you understand your overall health and how your body adapts to altitude. The sleep strap measures your blood oxygen saturation level by shining light into your skin and checking how much light is absorbed. This is displayed as your SpO2 percentage. In the Garmin Connect app, pulse oximeter readings appear as a SpO2 percentage. Here, you can view additional information about your pulse oximeter readings, including multi-day trends and variations in your blood oxygen saturation percentage (see "Respiration Variations", page 10). For more information on pulse oximeter accuracy, visit garmin.com/ataccuracy.
Tips for Unusual Pulse Oximeter Data
- Before putting on the sleep strap, clean and dry your wrist.
- Wear the sleep strap at heart level.
- Do not apply sunscreen, lotion, or insect repellent under the sleep strap.
- Do not scratch the optical sensor on the back of the module.
Heart Rate Variability Status
Your Index Sleep Monitor sleep strap analyzes your heart rate readings while you sleep to determine your heart rate variability (HRV), which is the variation in time between heartbeats. Training, physical activity, sleep, diet, and healthy habits all affect your heart rate variability. HRV values can vary significantly based on gender, age, and fitness level. A balanced HRV status can indicate positive health markers, such as good training and recovery balance, better cardiovascular fitness, and stress resilience. An unbalanced or poor status may indicate fatigue, a greater need for recovery, or increased stress. For best results, wear the sleep strap consistently during sleep. For the sleep strap to display your heart rate variability status, it requires three weeks of consistent sleep data.
Sync your sleep strap with your Garmin Connect account to view your current heart rate variability status and trends.
Status | Description |
---|---|
Balanced | Your 7-day average HRV is within your baseline range. |
Unbalanced | Your 7-day average HRV is above or below your baseline range. |
Low | Your 7-day average HRV is significantly below your baseline range. |
Poor | Your average HRV values are significantly lower than your age-appropriate normal range. |
No Status | Not enough data available to calculate your 7-day average. |
Skin Temperature
The Index Sleep Monitor sleep strap has a sensor designed to track variations in your skin temperature during the night. Skin temperature changes over time and can be related to recent activity and your sleep environment. Skin temperature may also indicate changes in your overall body temperature, potentially providing an early warning of illness. Track trends to help improve your sleep and health. Women's skin temperature variations can also be used to better track menstrual or ovulation cycles. For more information, visit www.garmin.com/garmin-technology/health-science/womens-health/. The sleep strap must be worn for three nights to establish a baseline for skin temperature.
Respiration Variations
CAUTION: The Index Sleep Monitor is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose or monitor any medical condition. For more information on pulse oximeter accuracy, visit garmin.com/ataccuracy.
The Index Sleep Monitor's optical heart rate sensor has a pulse oximeter function that allows you to measure your respiration variations at night. Respiration variation data is provided to help you understand your sleep environment and overall well-being. Infrequent or frequent respiration variations may be due to individual lifestyle factors or your sleep environment. Consult your physician or healthcare provider if you have concerns about your respiration variation levels. You can view additional information about respiration variations, including multi-day trends, in your Garmin Connect account.
