Sleep Monitoring
While you sleep, the Index Sleep Monitor sleep band automatically detects sleep and monitors your movements during your normal sleep hours. You can set your sleep schedule in the Garmin Connect app. Sleep statistics include total sleep hours, sleep stages, sleep movement, resting heart rate, Body Battery™ variation, and more. Your sleep coach provides sleep need recommendations based on your sleep history, activity, and HRV status. You can view detailed sleep statistics and set your sleep schedule in your Garmin Connect account (Setting your sleep schedule, page 7).
For more information, visit www.garmin.com/garmin-technology/health-science/sleep-tracking/.
Body Battery
Your sleep band analyzes heart rate variability, sleep quality, and sleep stages to determine your Body Battery variation overnight. A higher Body Battery variation is expected after a good night's sleep. Activity and stress drain your energy throughout the day, while naps and rest periods can slow this process or even provide a boost.
NOTE: Illnesses, alcohol consumption, and stress can prevent a full overnight Body Battery charge.
Sync your sleep band with your Garmin Connect account to view the latest Body Battery variation, long-term trends, and additional details.
Pulse Oximeter
The Index Sleep Monitor sleep band features a pulse oximeter to measure blood oxygen saturation. Your oxygen saturation can be valuable information for understanding your overall fitness and determining how your body is adapting to altitude. The sleep band measures blood oxygen level by emitting light onto your skin and checking the amount of light that is absorbed. This process is called SpO2.
In the Garmin Connect app, pulse oximeter readings appear as an SpO2 percentage. Here you can view additional details about pulse oximeter readings, including trends over several days, as well as any variations in blood oxygen saturation percentage (Breathing Variations, page 11). For more information on pulse oximeter accuracy, visit garmin.com/ataccuracy.
Tips for Pulse Oximeter Data
If pulse oximeter data is not displayed or is incorrect, you can try the following tips.
- Clean and dry your arm before putting on the sleep band.
- Wear the sleep band at heart level.
- Avoid wearing sunscreen, lotion, or insect repellent under the sleep band.
- Avoid damaging the optical sensor on the back of the module.
Heart Rate Variability Status
Your Index Sleep Monitor sleep band analyzes heart rate readings while you sleep to determine your heart rate variability (HRV), which is the variation in time between beats. Training, physical activity, sleep, nutrition, and healthy habits affect your heart rate variability. HRV values can vary greatly based on gender, age, and fitness level. A balanced HRV status can be a good indicator of your health, such as good balance between training and recovery, higher cardiovascular fitness, and greater stress resilience. A poor or unbalanced status may be a sign of fatigue, increased recovery needs, or increased stress. For best results, wear the sleep band consistently during sleep. The sleep band requires three weeks of consistent sleep data to display your heart rate variability status.
Sync your sleep band with your Garmin Connect account to view your current HRV status and trends.
Status | Description |
---|---|
Balanced | Your 7-day average HRV is within your baseline range. |
Unbalanced | Your 7-day average HRV is above or below your baseline range. |
Low | Your 7-day average HRV is well below your baseline range. |
Poor | Your HRV values are on average well below the normal range for your age. |
No status | Not enough data has been collected to generate a 7-day average. |
Skin Temperature
The Index Sleep Monitor sleep band module has a sensor designed to track variations in your skin temperature overnight. Skin temperature changes over time, which can be related to your recent activity and sleep environment. Skin temperature can also indicate changes in overall body temperature, potentially providing an early sign of illness. Observe trends for tips on how to improve your sleep and health.
TIP: For women, skin temperature variations can also be used to better track the menstrual or ovulation cycle. For more information, visit www.garmin.com/garmin-technology/health-science/womens-health/.
You should wear your sleep band for three nights to establish a baseline for skin temperature.
Breathing Variations
CAUTION: The Index Sleep Monitor device is not a medical device and is not intended for use in the diagnosis or monitoring of any medical condition. For more information on pulse oximeter accuracy, visit garmin.com/ataccuracy.
The optical heart rate sensor on the Index Sleep Monitor device has a pulse oximeter feature that can measure your breathing variations overnight. Information on breathing variation is provided to increase awareness of your sleep environment and overall well-being. Occasional or frequent breathing variations may be due to individual lifestyle factors or the sleep environment. Contact a doctor or healthcare professional if you have concerns about your breathing variation level.
In your Garmin Connect account, you can view additional details about pulse oximeter readings, including trends over several days.
