GDW Tow Bar Installation Guide
For Renault Scenic & Renault Megane (2003 onwards)
Model Reference: GDW Ref. 1424
EEC Approval Number: e6*94/20*0429*00
Overview
This document provides comprehensive installation instructions for the GDW Ref. 1424 tow bar (trailer hitch) designed for Renault Scenic, Renault Megane 3+5d, and Renault Grand Scenic vehicles manufactured from 2003 onwards. It includes a parts list, technical specifications, and important notes for proper fitting.
Technical Specifications
The tow bar meets EEC Approval standards: e6*94/20*0429*00.
The D value calculation is provided as:
D = (max kg * max kg) / (max kg + max kg) * 0.00981 <= 8.45 kN
Where:
max kg
refers to the maximum towing mass for the vehicle.- Vertical hitch load (s/) = 75 kg (Max.)
- Maximum towing mass = 1300 kg
Vehicle Compatibility & Dimensions
This tow bar is compatible with Renault Scenic, Renault Megane 3+5d, and Renault Grand Scenic models from 2003 onwards.
A diagram illustrates the required bumper cut-out. The hatched area needs to be cut away.
- B: the bumper
- O: the lower rim of the bumper
- M: the middle of the bumper
Dimensions indicated for the cut-out are 40mm and 70mm.
Technical drawings specify clearance requirements and angles (max. 45°, min. 32, min. 55, min. 65, min. 140, max. 100) and dimensions (350-420). Additional clearance angles (max. 30°) and radii (max. R14.5, max. R40, min. 75) are also shown. These are specified in accordance with Appendix VII, diagram 30 of guideline 94/20/EG and relate to the vehicle's total laden weight.
A diagram illustrates the 'T36 Escamotable' tow bar system. Key mounting points are labeled A, B, C, D, F. Photos show the process of enlarging chassis openings using a saw, with dashed lines indicating the cut area.
Installation Instructions
- Remove the floor covering and loosen the inner trunk lining.
- Disassemble the rear lights and bumper. Permanently remove the aluminum buffer beam and the sealing between the bodywork and the beam. Locate and enlarge the two openings providing access to the chassis beams. Unscrew the bolt securing the exhaust to the chassis beam. Re-attach the sealing to the bodywork and make an incision in it.
- On both sides, slide the sealing plates over the tow bar's carrying arms as shown in the drawing. Insert the mounting piece (ref. 1) through the sealing into the left chassis beam until it aligns with the provided holes at points (A) and (B) (remove any adhesive tape). Point (A) is in the far left corner and may not be visible. Insert bolts and washers loosely. The holes in the sealing plates should align with the original buffer beam mounting points; use the original nuts to secure these plates.
- Slide the tow bar with the right carrying arm into the chassis beam until it aligns with points (C) and (D) on the provided holes. Points (F) should align with the mounting piece (ref. 1). Insert bolts and washers and tighten all fasteners securely (refer to torque specifications). The holes in the sealing plates should also align with the original buffer beam mounting points; use the original nuts for securing.
- Re-assemble the bumper and rear lights. Then, attach the ball or the retractable system to the tow bar.

Important Notes
- For the maximum permissible towing mass for your vehicle, consult your car dealer or owner's manual.
- Remove any bitumen coating or anti-vibration material from the mounting points if present.
- When drilling, exercise caution to avoid damaging brake lines, electrical wiring, or fuel lines.
- The clearance must be guaranteed according to Appendix VII, diagram 30 of guideline 94/20/EG.
- Ensure proper clearance is maintained for the vehicle's total laden weight.
