Leica M11 Series Firmware Update 2.5.1

New Features (NOWE)

• Compliance with the EU Radio Equipment Directive (Article 3.3).
• Enhanced WLAN security: A new, randomly generated Wi-Fi password is assigned after resetting the camera.
• Protection on first startup: PTP pairing is only possible after completing the connection wizard to prevent unauthorized connections.
• Secure formatting: Internal memory can now be completely overwritten (secure erase).

• Fixed an error that caused a low battery warning to be displayed despite a sufficient battery level.

Important Information Regarding SD Card Usage

In rare cases, technical issues may occur when using UHS-I cards. To generally avoid this error and ensure the best possible camera performance, Leica recommends using UHS-II cards.

Firmware Update Information

Leica continuously works on the further development and optimization of your camera. Since many camera functions are controlled exclusively by software, improvements and extensions to the range of functions can be installed on the camera at a later date. For this purpose, Leica offers firmware updates at irregular intervals, which are available for download on our website. After registering your camera, Leica will inform you about any new updates. Users of the Leica FOTOS app are also automatically informed about firmware updates for their Leica cameras.

Firmware updates can be installed in two different ways:

• Conveniently using the Leica FOTOS app
• Directly in the camera menu

How to Determine Installed Software Version

In the main menu, select Camera Information. The current firmware version is displayed next to the Camera Firmware Version menu item.

Performing Firmware Updates

Warning: Interrupting an ongoing firmware update can cause serious and irreversible damage to the device!

Therefore, during the firmware update, pay particular attention to the following instructions:

• Do not turn off the camera!
• Do not remove the memory card!
• Do not remove the battery!
• Do not remove the lens!

Tips

• If the battery is not sufficiently charged, a warning message will appear. In this case, charge the battery first and repeat the procedure described above.
• Further device and country approval marks or numbers can be found in the Camera Information submenu.

Preparations

1. Fully charge and insert the battery.
2. Remove all firmware files from the memory card.
3. It is recommended to create a backup of all recordings from the memory card, and then format it in the camera. (Note: Data loss! In case of formatting the memory card, all data on it will be lost.)
4. As a precaution, also create a backup of files located in the internal memory.
5. Download the latest firmware.
6. Save the firmware file to the memory card.
7. The firmware file must be saved in the root directory of the memory card (not in a subdirectory).
8. Insert the memory card into the camera.
9. Turn on the camera.

Firmware Update Procedure for M11 / M11-P / M11 Monochrom

1. Perform preparations.
2. In the main menu, select Camera Information.
3. Select Camera Firmware Version.
4. Select Firmware Update.
5. A query with update information will be displayed. Check the version information.
6. Select Yes.
7. The prompt "Do you want to save profiles on SD card?" appears.
8. Select Yes or No.
9. The update will start automatically.
10. During this process, the bottom status LED blinks.
11. Upon successful completion, a corresponding message will be displayed, and the camera will restart.

Tips

• It is recommended to reset the camera to factory settings after the update.
• After resetting the device, you will need to set the date, time, and language again. A corresponding prompt will appear.

Firmware Update Procedure for M11-D

1. Perform preparations.
2. Press and hold the function button.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. During the update, the status LED and the self-timer LED blink red, and the message "UP" is displayed in the viewfinder.

Formatting Storage Media

Periodic formatting of storage media is recommended, as some residual data (data accompanying the recording) may occupy memory space. The inserted memory card and internal memory can be formatted independently of each other. Please note the following:

• Do not turn off the camera during operation.
• In case of formatting the memory card, all data on it will be lost. Protection against deletion of appropriately marked recordings does not prevent formatting.
• Therefore, all recordings should be regularly transferred to a secure mass storage device, such as a computer's hard drive.

Secure Formatting of Internal Memory (SECURE ERASE)

Internal memory can be formatted to remove residual data accumulated over a longer period or to quickly empty the memory.

In the main menu, select Storage Management ➡️ Select Format Storage ➡️ Select Format internal memory (secure) ➡️ Confirm operation.

Tips

• In the case of simple formatting, only the directory is deleted, so existing files are no longer directly accessible. With appropriate software, this data can be made accessible again. Only data that is subsequently overwritten by writing new data is actually permanently deleted. To completely and irreversibly delete all images, image fragments, and personal data, select the Format internal memory (secure) deletion process. This process can take up to 75 minutes.
• If the memory card was formatted on another device, e.g., a computer, it must be reformatted in the camera.
• For the Leica M11-D, the secure erase process can only be performed via the Leica FOTOS app.
