DOD FX-17 Wah/Volume Controller Pedal

Instruction Manual

Introduction

The new FX-17 offers three distinct functions: a "WAH-WAH" effect, a volume control pedal, and a 0 to +5 volt control pedal. The WAH or volume control is selected by a push switch located on the side of the pedal. The FX-17 is an "industrial strength" pedal, utilizing proprietary techniques that eliminate strings, mechanisms that wear out, internal lights that burn out, or scratchy pots. When the foot pedal is rocked all the way back in the "wah" mode, a switch is depressed bypassing the WAH effect. The 0 to +5 volt output is for use as a synth controller pedal or for other devices requiring voltage control. The FX-17 is battery or A.C. adapter powered and constructed of heavy gauge steel for durability.

How to Connect the FX-17

The FX-17 can be used as a "WAH-WAH" effect for electric guitar, voice, horn, or any amplified instrument; as a volume control for amplified instruments; or as a 0 to +5 volt control pedal for devices that use voltage control. The FX-17 uses a proprietary technique for its functions, eliminating maintenance issues associated with older designs. It features a rubber non-skid foot pad, an easy-access battery compartment, an adapter jack for A.C. operation, a rugged heavy gauge steel case, and a rubber non-skid bottom.

Connections:

Important Note: The 0 to +5 volt control output requires a minimum current capability. Therefore, it will not operate when using a battery. You must use a DOD PS-3, DOD FX-105, or an equivalent power supply to utilize this function.

Operation of the FX-17

Wah-Wah Mode

To engage the WAH-WAH mode, push the switch on the right side of the pedal IN. Tipping the foot pedal all the way back firmly depresses a small switch in the base of the pedal, disengaging the WAH-WAH effect. The position of the foot pedal determines where the tone change occurs. The WAH-WAH effect typically involves a constant change in tone as you play, but the pedal can also be set to a specific position to achieve a desired sound.

Volume Control Mode

To operate in the volume control mode, ensure the mode button on the right side of the pedal chassis is in the OUT position. The position of the foot pedal dictates the output level of the signal. With the pedal tipped all the way back, the output level is at its minimum. When the pedal is tipped all the way forward, the output level is at its maximum. For a more consistent and predictable volume control, consider using a compressor pedal, such as the DOD FX-80B Compressor/Sustainer or FX-82 Bass Compressor.

0 to +5 Volt Control Output

The 0 to +5 volt control output is active in both WAH-WAH and volume control modes. This output is used to control functions on synthesizers or other equipment. Connect the 3.5mm output jack to the device you intend to control. As noted previously, this function requires a dedicated power supply (DOD PS-3, DOD FX-105, or equivalent) and will not operate on battery power due to insufficient current.
