Initial Setup Steps
Step 1A: Prepare Modem
Unplug or power off your modem.
Step 1B: Connect Modem
Cable your modem to the Internet connection (DSL or Cable).
Step 2: Connect Router
Cable your router to the modem using an Ethernet cable.
Step 3: Connect Computer
Cable your computer to the router using an Ethernet cable (computer not included).
Step 4: Power On Modem
Power on your modem. Wait until the modem cycles on (approximately 2 minutes). Note: If your modem has a battery-backup, remove and re-insert the battery before connecting it to power.
Step 5: Power On Router
Power on your router. Wait until the power LED turns solid green.
Step 6: Run Setup CD
Insert the Resource CD into your computer. Click 'Router Setup' and follow the on-screen steps to set up a secure wireless network.
Note: If your computer lacks a CD drive, follow the "No CD Drive" Installation instructions.

Set up Internet Access
- Open a web browser and navigate to http://www.routerlogin.net.
- Enter the router User Name 'admin' and default Password 'password' to access the main settings page.
- When prompted to "Check for Update," click "Cancel". Firmware updates can be checked later.
- Select "Setup Wizard" from the left-hand menu. Ensure "Yes" is selected and click "Next" to follow the prompts.
The Setup Wizard will detect your connection type. Once completed, the Basic Settings page will display your configuration. You are now connected to the Internet.
Note: If your ISP requires a User Name or Password, you will be prompted. Contact your ISP if you need this information. After connecting to the Internet, firmware updates can be checked via "Router Upgrade".
Set up Wireless Security
Setting up a secure wireless network is recommended for safe connections for laptops, gaming devices (such as Wii® or PlayStation 3® with wireless), or other wireless equipment.
- From the main menu, select "Wireless Settings".
- Name your wireless network (SSID). Choose a memorable name. (Default is NETGEAR).
- Select a security method. NETGEAR recommends WPA2-PSK (AES). Enter a Passphrase (e.g., HomeNetwork). Both Network Name (SSID) and Passphrase are case-sensitive and must match on all connected devices.
- Click "Apply" and close the browser.
Connect Wireless Devices to Your Router
Enter your wireless information:
Wireless Network Name (SSID):
[Your Network Name]
Wireless Security Passphrase:
[Your Passphrase]
If you forget your Passphrase, access http://www.routerlogin.net, log in with User Name 'admin' and Password 'password', and navigate to Wireless Settings.
To add wireless devices (e.g., iPhone®, laptop computer, gaming device):
- Open the wireless connection software on the device.
- Scan for available wireless networks and select your network name.
- If security is enabled, enter the Passphrase when prompted and click "Connect".
WPS (Push 'N' Connect) Method:
- Press the WPS button on the router.
- Within 2 minutes, follow the wireless device's instructions to complete the connection.
Repeat these steps for each device you wish to connect.
