HomeLink Programming Guide

Instructions for programming your vehicle's HomeLink system to operate garage doors and other devices.

1. Programming HomeLink®

The following steps guide you through programming HomeLink. For questions or difficulties, consult the HomeLink website or call their customer support. It is recommended to complete these steps before returning to the dealer.

  • Visit the HomeLink website at: www.homelink.com. Select your vehicle make, then watch the YouTube video or access additional information.
  • Alternatively, scan the QR code to access the website via your cell phone. [QR Code Image Description: QR code for accessing HomeLink website via cell phone.]
  • For assistance, call HomeLink customer support at 1-800-355-3515. Have your vehicle's make/model and the opener device's make/model ready.

1) Programming Preparation

  1. When programming a garage door opener, it is advised to park the vehicle outside the garage.
  2. It is recommended to install a new battery in the handheld transmitter of the device being programmed for quicker training and accurate signal transmission.
  3. Place the vehicle's ignition switch in the ACC (Accessory) position for HomeLink programming.

2) Programming a New HomeLink® Button

[Image Description: Rearview mirror console with HomeLink buttons labeled 1, 2, 3, and an indicator light labeled 7.]

  1. Press and release the desired HomeLink button (1, 2, or 3). The HomeLink indicator light (7) will flash orange slowly. If it does not, refer to the "Erasing HomeLink Buttons" section and start over.
  2. Position the garage door opener remote 1-3 inches (2-8 cm) away from the HomeLink buttons.
  3. While the HomeLink indicator light (7) is flashing orange, press and hold the handheld remote button until the indicator light (7) changes from orange to green. Release the handheld remote button.
  4. Wait until your garage door comes to a complete stop, regardless of its position, before proceeding.
  5. Press and release the HomeLink button you are programming and observe the indicator light.
    • If the indicator light remains solid green, your device should operate when the HomeLink button is pressed. Programming is complete if the device operates.
    • If the indicator light rapidly flashes green, firmly press and hold the HomeLink button for two seconds, then release. Repeat this process up to three times slowly. Do not press the button rapidly. If the device operates, programming is complete. If it does not operate, continue to step 6.
  6. [Image Description: Diagram of a garage door opener motor unit, indicating the location of the 'Learn', 'Smart', 'Set', or 'Program' button near the antenna wire.] At the garage door opener motor (or security gate motor), locate the "Learn", "Smart", "Set", or "Program" button. This is typically found near the antenna wire attachment on the motor-head unit. Consult the device's manual for identification. Button names and colors vary by manufacturer.
  7. ? [Note] A ladder and/or a second person may simplify the following steps.
  8. Firmly press and release the "Learn", "Smart", "Set", or "Program" button on the opener motor. You have up to 30 seconds to complete the next step.
  9. Return to the vehicle. Firmly press and hold the programmed HomeLink button for two seconds, then release. Repeat this up to three times slowly. As soon as the garage door starts to move, stop pressing buttons. Wait a few seconds after the garage door has come to a complete stop. Programming is complete, and your device should operate when the HomeLink button is pressed and released.

3. Two-Way Communication Programming (For select garage door openers)

If your garage door opener has the 'myQ' logo, it likely supports Two-Way Communication. HomeLink can establish this capability, allowing it to receive and display "closing" or "opening" status messages. HomeLink can also recall and display the last recorded status.

To check compatibility, refer to www.homelink.com/compatible/Two-way-Communication. If your opener has this functionality and the Two-Way Communication indicators (4), (6) appear in the mirror during operation, programming is complete. If the indicators do not appear, follow these instructions:

  1. In your vehicle, press and hold the programmed HomeLink button for 2 seconds, then release. Confirm the garage door is moving. After it stops, you have one minute to complete the following steps.
  2. ? [Note] A ladder and/or a second person may simplify the following steps.
  3. On your garage door opener motor, locate the "Learn" button (usually near the antenna wire). Refer to the device's owner's manual if needed.
  4. Press and release the "Learn" button.
  5. A light on the opener may flash, and your vehicle's Two-Way Communication indicators (4), (6) may flash, confirming completion.
  6. Return to the vehicle and press and release the programmed HomeLink button to activate your garage door. The indicators (4), (6) will flash orange while the door is moving. Do not press any other buttons until the garage door has completely stopped.
  7. Your Two-Way Communication programming is now complete.

Information

? If your garage door opener has Two-Way Communication functionality, it's possible for HomeLink to stop functioning the garage door shortly after initial programming, IF the Two-Way Communication Programming wasn't properly completed. This usually happens after the first 10 times a programmed HomeLink button is pressed. If you experience this, completing the "Programming a New HomeLink Button" and "Two-Way Communication Programming" steps again should restore operation.

4. Canadian Programming

Canadian radio-frequency laws require transmitter signals to "time-out" after a few seconds, which might be too short for HomeLink to capture during programming.

If you are in Canada or experiencing difficulties programming a gate or garage door opener, replace step 3 of "Programming a New HomeLink Button" with the following:

While the HomeLink indicator light (7) is flashing orange, press and release ("cycle") your device's handheld remote every two seconds until the indicator light (7) changes from orange to green. You may now release the handheld remote button. Then, proceed with "Programming a New HomeLink Button" step 4.

Operating HomeLink®

[Image Description: Rearview mirror console with HomeLink buttons labeled 1, 2, 3, and an indicator light labeled 7.]

  1. Press and release the desired programmed HomeLink button (1, 2, or 3).

Information

The HomeLink indicator (7) should light green (solid or flashing), and your programmed device should operate. If it does not operate, programming was unsuccessful, and you will need to reprogram the button.
