Garage Door Opener Remote Control
Remote Control for Garage Doors
This guide provides instructions for programming and using your vehicle's remote control transmitter, often referred to as HomeLink®, to operate garage doors and other radio-controlled devices.
Important Safety Information:
- Do not use the remote control to operate garage doors that do not have an emergency stop and reverse function, as required by safety regulations.
- Ensure no objects are obstructing the path of the garage or driveway gates during the programming process to prevent property damage.
- Be aware that this device may be subject to interference from mobile or stationary transmitters. Such interference can affect the operation of both handheld remotes and vehicle-based remotes.
The transmitter is located in the rear-view mirror. It can be programmed to operate on three different frequencies, allowing you to remotely control driveway gates, garage doors, home lighting, security systems, and other radio-controlled devices.
While this section specifically describes programming for garage doors, the procedure is the same for other compatible devices.
In some countries, this system is also known as the universal HomeLink® remote.
For additional information, refer to Section 62, Information and Support.
Before Programming
Important Notes:
- During the programming process, you may need to press the buttons on your handheld remote control multiple times. It is recommended to turn off the power to the gate operator during the programming cycle to prevent potential damage to the electric motor.
- Before programming the remote control for your garage door or other device, it is recommended to install a new battery in your handheld remote control. If the garage door opener receiver (located in the garage) has an antenna, ensure the antenna is pointing straight down.
Programming
For vehicles with the engine off:
- Ensure the ignition is turned on.
- Hold the handheld garage door opener remote control 50 to 150 mm (2 to 6 inches) away from the rear-view mirror remote control, ensuring the indicator light is visible.
- Using both hands, simultaneously press and hold the desired button on the rear-view mirror remote and the button on the handheld remote. Keep both buttons pressed. The indicator light will begin to flash: first slowly, then rapidly. Release both buttons when the indicator light flashes rapidly. Rapid flashing indicates successful programming.
- If the indicator light does not flash rapidly within 60 seconds, release the transmitter and handheld remote buttons and repeat the procedure starting from step 2. Try positioning the handheld remote at a different angle and/or distance.
- Press and hold the programmed garage door opener remote control button and observe the indicator light.
- If the indicator light remains continuously lit, programming is complete. The device you intend to control should now respond when you press and hold the garage door opener remote control button for approximately 1-2 seconds.
- If the indicator light flashes rapidly for two seconds and then remains continuously lit, you need to perform programming using the instructions for rolling code devices, as outlined below.
Programming Rolling Code Devices
Note: Having a helper can significantly simplify the following steps. After pressing a button, you will have only 30 seconds to complete step 3.
- Locate the 'learn' or 'smart' button/switch on your garage door opener receiver (the unit in the garage). The label on the button or switch may vary depending on the equipment manufacturer.
- Press and release the 'learn' or 'smart' button.
- Return to your vehicle and, while holding down the programmed garage door opener control button, press and hold it for two seconds, then release it.
- Repeat the sequence of pressing, holding, and releasing three times to complete programming.
The rear-view mirror remote should now operate the rolling code device.
Reprogramming an Individual Remote Control Button
To program a device to a pre-programmed button:
- Press and hold the pre-programmed garage door opener remote control button for 20-30 seconds until the indicator light begins to flash.
- Without releasing the button on the rear-view mirror, bring the garage door opener remote control 50-150 mm (2-6 inches) from the rear-view mirror transmitter, ensuring the indicator light remains visible.
- Complete step 3 of the Programming procedure.
Programming Driveway Gates
Programming driveway gates for some manufacturers requires repeatedly pressing the handheld remote control button every two seconds. Hold down the rear-view mirror remote control button while repeatedly pressing the handheld remote button until the indicator light flashes rapidly.
Deleting Programming
For initial programming, turn off the vehicle engine.
- Ensure the ignition is on (but the engine is not running).
- Press and hold the two outer buttons on the rear-view mirror transmitter. Keep the buttons pressed until the indicator light begins to flash (this will take approximately 20 seconds), then release the buttons.
All garage door opener remote control programs are now erased.
Note: This procedure should not be performed when programming buttons for an additional remote control.
