Garage Door Opener Remote Control

Remote Control for Garage Doors

This guide provides instructions for programming and using your garage door opener remote control, which is integrated into your vehicle's rearview mirror. This system is also known as HomeLink® Universal Transceiver in some countries.

Important Safety Precautions

⚠️ Do not use the remote control to operate garage doors that do not have an emergency stop and reverse function, as required by safety regulations.

⚠️ Ensure there are no obstructions in the path of the garage or driveway gates when programming the remote control. This prevents property damage if the gates begin to move during the programming process.

This device may be subject to interference when used in areas with mobile or stationary transmitters. Such interference affects both handheld remotes and vehicle-based remotes.

Programming Your Remote Control

The remote control is located in the rearview mirror. It can be programmed to operate up to three different frequencies, allowing you to remotely control driveway gates, garage doors, home lighting, security systems, and other radio-controlled devices.

Before Starting Programming:

  • It may be necessary to press the buttons on your handheld remote control multiple times. For safety, it is recommended to turn off the power to the gate opener during the programming cycle to prevent potential damage to the electric motor.
  • It is recommended to insert a new battery into your handheld remote control before programming.
  • If the receiver for the garage door opener (located in the garage) has an antenna, ensure the antenna is directed downwards.

Programming Steps (for Fixed Code):

With the engine off:

  1. Ensure the ignition is turned on.
  2. Hold the garage door opener remote control 50–150 mm (2–6 inches) away from the transceiver in the rearview mirror, ensuring the indicator light is visible.
  3. Simultaneously press and hold the desired button on the rearview mirror and the button on the handheld remote control. Hold both buttons. The indicator light will begin to flash, first slowly, then rapidly. Release both buttons when the indicator light flashes rapidly. Rapid flashing of the indicator light signifies successful programming.
  4. If the indicator light does not flash rapidly within 60 seconds, release the transmitter and remote control buttons and repeat the procedure starting from step 2. Try positioning the handheld remote control at a different angle or distance.
  5. Press and hold the programmed button on the garage door opener remote control and observe the indicator.
  • If the indicator light stays on continuously, programming is complete. The device you intend to control should respond with a 1–2 second button press.
  • If the indicator light flashes rapidly for two seconds and then stays on continuously, you need to program using the instructions for rolling code devices, as outlined below.

Programming for Rolling Code Devices

Note: Having an assistant can significantly simplify the following steps. For step 3, you will have 30 seconds after pressing the button to complete the action.

  1. Locate the 'learn' or 'smart' button/switch on the garage door opener unit in your garage. The label on the button/switch may vary depending on the equipment manufacturer.
  2. Press and release the 'learn' or 'smart' button.
  3. Return to your vehicle, press and hold the programmable button on the rearview mirror for two seconds, then release.
  4. Repeat the press/hold/release sequence three times in a row to complete the programming process.

The garage door opener remote control in the rearview mirror should now operate the rolling code device.

Reprogramming an Individual Remote Control Button

To program a device to a pre-programmed button:

  1. Press and hold the pre-programmed garage door opener remote control button for 20 to 30 seconds, or until the indicator light begins to flash rapidly.
  2. Without releasing the button on the rearview mirror, position the remote control approximately 50–150 mm (2–6 inches) from the transceiver in the rearview mirror, ensuring the indicator light is visible.
  3. Complete Step 3 of the Programming section.

Programming for Driveway Gates

Programming driveway gates for some manufacturers may require pressing the handheld remote control button every 2 seconds. Hold down the remote control button on the rearview mirror, and repeatedly press the handheld remote control button until the indicator light flashes rapidly.

Deleting Programs

When first programming, turn off the vehicle's engine.

  1. Ensure the ignition is on (but the engine is not running).
  2. Press and hold the two outermost buttons on the rearview mirror remote control. Hold the buttons until the indicator light begins to flash (this will take approximately 20 seconds), then release the buttons.

All garage door opener remote control programs are now erased. Note: This procedure should not be performed when programming buttons for an additional remote control for the garage door opener.
