What the FX69B Does
The FX69B Grunge is a hypercharged high-gain preamp that delivers extreme distortion. It simulates the sound of a guitar amplifier turned up to twelve, clipping the signal to produce heavy distortion. A key advantage of this pedal is its ability to produce heavy distortion at any amplifier volume or setting.
Connecting the FX69B
- Connect your guitar to the input of the FX69B.
- Connect the output of the FX69B to your amplifier or another effects device.
- To eliminate the need for a 9-volt battery, attach either the DOD PS3 or the DOD PS50 power supply to the AC adapter jack.
Features
- LED indicator shows status of effect and battery condition.
- Active switching for noiseless operation.
- Easy access battery compartment.
- Adapter jack for AC operation.
- Rugged die-cast metal case.
- Three year limited warranty.
- Rubber non-skid bottom.
Controls
- LOUD: Matches the distortion level with the original signal level. Turning clockwise increases the level; counterclockwise decreases it.
- LOW: Controls the low-frequency (bass) content of your guitar sound. Turning clockwise increases bass; counterclockwise decreases bass.
- HIGH: Controls the high-frequency (treble) content of your guitar sound. Turning clockwise increases treble; counterclockwise decreases treble.
- GRUNGE: Controls the amount of gain (distortion or drive) on your guitar sound. Turning clockwise increases gain; counterclockwise decreases it.
- FOOTSWITCH: Switches the distortion effect in or out of the signal path.
- LED INDICATOR: Lights when the distortion is enabled, and is not lit when the distortion is bypassed.
- JACKS: Input, Output, AC Adapter (use DOD PS3 or DOD PS50 power supply for AC operation).
Operation of the FX69B
The FX69B is a high-gain effect designed for intense distortion. The signal passes through the unit and is overdriven to create the grunge sound. While specific settings are subjective, the following provides guidance:
- Use the LOUD control to match the distortion effect's level with the original input signal, aiming for a slight increase when the effect is engaged.
- The LOW knob adjusts the low-frequency content of the signal when the effect is on. Clockwise increases bass.
- The HIGH knob adjusts the high-frequency content. Clockwise adds more edge, described as a "chainsaw on a chalkboard" sound.
- The GRUNGE control significantly impacts the gain. Even at lower settings, it provides fierce overdrive. Turning it clockwise increases distortion, while counterclockwise slightly reduces it.
The following pages offer example settings for various sounds, with graphic representations of knob positions. These are starting points for users to create their own preferred sounds.
Example Sound Settings:
Sound 1: Melvins-esque / Flabby Low End
This setting is reminiscent of the Melvins and similar bands. It features cut treble (HIGH) and a flabby low end (LOW). Tuning the guitar down to D is recommended to enhance the flabbiness.
Sound 2: Extreme Distortion / Wall of Noise
This setting produces extreme distortion that may be unpleasant to some listeners. The LOW and HIGH controls are cut for this sound, creating a wall of undefined noise. Tuning the guitar to C# (C#, F#, B, E, G#, C#) and turning the amplifier up is suggested for an extra flabby bottom end.
Sound 3: Grinding, Overdriven Sound with Crisp Top End
This setting provides a grinding, overdriven sound with a crisp top end. When used with a single-coil pickup, it can produce significant noise.
Product Image Description

The top panel features several control knobs, labeled LOUD, LOW, HIGH, and GRUNGE. Below these knobs, the pedal displays the name "GRUNGE" in large, stylized letters. A red LED indicator is visible above the controls. The DOD logo is prominently displayed at the top of the pedal. The pedal is depicted with a textured, ribbed surface on the front and sides, and a footswitch at the bottom. The overall aesthetic is rugged and industrial.
