Product Description
The FX51 is an overdrive pedal designed to work with or without an already distorted amplifier. It provides a "squishy" tube sound, suitable for blues to rock and roll music. The pedal can add character and "Juice" to a distorted amplifier without becoming harsh, enhancing harmonics and allowing for a wide range of tones.
Connecting the FX51
Connect your guitar to the input of the FX51. Connect the output of the FX51 to your amplifier or another effects device. To use AC power and eliminate the need for a 9-volt battery, attach the DOD PS200R to the AC adapter jack.
Features
- LED indicator shows effect status and battery condition.
- Active switching for noiseless operation.
- Easy access battery compartment.
- Adapter jack for AC operation.
- Rugged die-cast metal case.
- Three year limited warranty.
- Rubber non-skid bottom.
Controls
- SWEET: Controls the amount of distortion added to a guitar when it is already running into a distorted amplifier. Use this control to overdrive the front end of amplifiers and add a solo boost.
- PULP: Controls the low frequency EQ of the FX51. Use this control to adjust the amplifier's distortion sound from thin to flubby.
- TANG: Controls the amount of high frequency EQ of the FX51. Use this control to make your amplifier sound crisp or to add harmonics that can cause the guitar to oscillate.
- JUICE: Adds gain or distortion to the FX51. Turning this up while using a distorted amp increases the sustain of the notes.
- FOOTSWITCH: Switches the effect in or out of the signal path.
- LED INDICATOR: Lights when the distortion is enabled; it is not lit when the distortion is bypassed.
- JACKS: Input, Output, AC Adapter (use the DOD PS200R power supply only).
Setting Up the Effect
When setting up the effect, use the SWEET control to match the level of the distortion effect with the level of the original input signal. The control should be set for a slight increase in level when the effect is switched into the signal path. When using the FX51 with a distorted amplifier, use it to control how hard the signal "hits" the front of the amp or distorts it. The more it is turned up, the more the amp will distort.
The following examples show different sound settings with graphic representations of knob positions. Use these as starting points to create your own sounds.
Rock Overdrive
This setting provides a rock or slightly over-driven ska sound. Use a good hollow body guitar. Set SWEET to 12 o'clock, PULP to 2 o'clock, TANG to 12 o'clock, and JUICE to 12 o'clock.
Settings: SWEET: 12:00, PULP: 2:00, TANG: 12:00, JUICE: 12:00
Punk Distortion
To achieve a punk sound, first adjust your amp for a medium gain distortion setting. Then, use the FX51 with SWEET turned up (usually all the way), PULP to 12 o'clock, TANG turned up, and JUICE all the way up.
Settings: SWEET: Max, PULP: 12:00, TANG: Max, JUICE: Max
Metal Solo
For a standard metal solo sound, use the FX51 alone. Set PULP to 2 o'clock, TANG to 12 o'clock, and JUICE up. This setting is suitable for fast playing and includes pick squeals.
Settings: PULP: 2:00, TANG: 12:00, JUICE: Max
Solo Boost
To change the tone and gain of your amp for solos, set your amp for a good distortion setting. Then, set the FX51's SWEET control up, PULP to 9 o'clock, TANG to 9 o'clock, and JUICE up. Use the FX51 when soloing or for feedback.
Settings: SWEET: Max, PULP: 9:00, TANG: 9:00, JUICE: Max
