Getting Started
Unpacking the Watch
When you unpack your SmartHeart SE190 Heart Rate Monitor, keep all packing materials in a safe place for potential transport or servicing needs.
In this box, you will find:
- Heart rate monitor watch
- Chest belt
- 2 x CR2032 lithium batteries
NOTE: Do not dispose of this product as unsorted municipal waste. Special treatment is necessary for collection and disposal.
Batteries
The unit uses a CR2032 lithium battery for the watch and another for the chest belt. Both are included. When the watch battery is running low, a ? icon will light up.
To replace the watch battery:
The process involves turning the watch over, detaching the strap, removing four screws to access the back plate, removing the back plate, using a thin instrument to release the battery clip, removing the old battery, sliding in the new CR2032 battery with the '+' side upwards, replacing the battery clip, and finally reattaching the back plate and screws.
To replace the chest belt battery:
Locate the battery compartment on the back of the chest belt. Use a coin to twist the compartment lid counter-clockwise to remove it. Remove the old battery, insert the new battery with the '+' side upwards, and replace the lid by twisting it clockwise until it is firmly in place.
IMPORTANT:
- Non-rechargeable and rechargeable batteries must be disposed of properly. Use designated collection centers.
- Batteries are dangerous if swallowed. Keep away from infants. Seek immediate medical advice if a battery is swallowed.
- Supplied batteries must not be recharged, reactivated, dismantled, put into fire, or short-circuited.
Wearing the Chest Belt and Watch
Chest Belt
The heart rate chest belt counts your heartbeat and transmits data to the watch. To wear it:
- Wet the conductive pads on the underside of the chest belt with a few drops of water or conductive gel for solid contact.
- Strap the chest belt across your chest, adjusting it to sit snugly below your pectoral muscles for an accurate heart rate signal.
Tips for Chest Belt Placement
- The position of the chest belt affects performance. Adjust it to fall above your heart. Avoid areas with dense chest hair.
- In dry, cold climates, it may take a few minutes for the chest belt to function steadily; this is normal and should improve with exercise.
Transmission Signal
The heart rate chest belt and watch have a maximum transmission range of approximately 62.5 cm (25 inches). A ⚡ icon flashes when the watch is receiving a signal from the chest belt.
If you experience a weak signal (watch shows "0") or signal disruption due to interference:
- Shorten the distance between the chest belt and watch.
- Re-adjust the chest belt position.
- Ensure conductive pads are moist.
- Check batteries; low batteries can affect transmission range.
WARNING: Signal interference can cause incorrect or unstable heart readings. Interference may be due to electromagnetic disturbances from power lines, traffic lights, electric railways, car motors, cellular phones, etc.
NOTE: If the watch is idle without a heart rate signal for 5 minutes, the receiver will turn off.
You can wear the watch on your wrist or strap it to a bike or exercise machine. Foam may be needed between the watch and handlebar for a secure fit.

Activity Level
Your activity level is based on self-assessment of regular exercise:
ACTIVITY LEVEL | DESCRIPTION |
0 | Low – You do not usually participate in programmed recreation sports or exercise. |
1 | Medium – You are engaged in modest physical activity (e.g., golfing, horseback riding, table tennis, calisthenics, bowling, weight lifting, gymnastics) 2-3 times a week, totaling 1 hour per week. |
2 | High – You actively and regularly participate in heavy physical exercise (e.g., running, jogging, swimming, cycling, skipping rope) or engage in vigorous aerobic exercise (e.g., tennis, basketball, handball). |
About the Fitness Index
Fitness Index
Your watch generates a fitness index based on aerobic fitness, measured by maximum oxygen uptake (VO2 Max). VO2 Max is the highest amount of oxygen utilized during demanding exercise. Factors include lungs, heart, blood, circulatory system, and muscles. The unit is ml/kg min.
A higher index indicates better fitness. See the tables below for a guide:
Fitness Index for Men
A chart plotting Age against Fitness Index, showing zones for FAIR, AVERAGE, and GOOD. For example, at age 22, FAIR is below 27, AVERAGE is 27-32, and GOOD is above 32. These ranges shift with age.
Fitness Index for Women
A chart plotting Age against Fitness Index, showing zones for FAIR, AVERAGE, and GOOD. For example, at age 15, FAIR is below 20, AVERAGE is 20-25, and GOOD is above 25. These ranges shift with age.
View Fitness Index
Your fitness index displays automatically after user profile entry. You can also display it by pressing MEM while the user profile mode is active (ensure all user profile data is entered first).
About the Smart Training Program (Timer Mode)
The Smart Training Program guides you through exercise cycles, from warm-up to completion. It monitors heart rate, alerts you if you fall outside the selected heart rate limits, and tracks calories consumed.
Different activities require different settings. For example, running settings differ from weight training settings.
The time required for an exercise will vary, so you can change the countdown time. Once your user profile is set, lower and upper heart rate limits are automatic but can be manually adjusted. Changing the target activity level also updates heart rate limits.
Target Activity Levels
TARGET ACTIVITY | %MHR* | DESCRIPTION |
0 Health Maintenance | 65-78% | Lowest target activity level. Good for beginners and those strengthening cardiovascular systems. |
1 Aerobic Exercise | 65%-85% | Increases strength and endurance. Works within oxygen intake capability, burns more calories, and can be maintained for a long period. |
2 Anaerobic Exercise | 78-90% | Generates speed and power. Works at or above oxygen intake capability, builds muscle, and cannot be maintained for a long period. |
* MHR = Maximum Heart Rate
Calculating Maximum / Lower / Upper Heart Rate Limit
To achieve maximum health benefits, know your:
- Maximum heart rate (MHR)
- Lower heart rate limit
- Upper heart rate limit
The unit can determine your MHR and set limits automatically. Alternatively, you can calculate and set them manually:
- MHR = 220 - age
- Lower Limit = MHR x lower target activity % (e.g., MHR x 65% for target activity 0)
- Upper Limit = MHR x upper target activity % (e.g., MHR x 78% for target activity 0)

Training Information
How the Heart Rate Monitor Helps You
A heart rate monitor is a vital tool for cardiovascular health and an ideal training partner. It allows you to monitor results, assess performance, and optimize your exercise program for safer, more effective goal achievement. The chest belt transmits your heartbeat to the watch for real-time monitoring. As you get fitter, your heart works more efficiently, pumping more blood per beat, thus requiring fewer beats per minute to supply oxygen to muscles.
Training Tips
To maximize training benefits and ensure safety:
- Set a clear training goal (e.g., weight loss, fitness, competition).
- Choose enjoyable activities and vary them to work different muscle groups.
- Start slowly and gradually increase intensity as you get fitter. Exercise regularly (e.g., 20-30 minutes, three times a week for cardiovascular health).
- Always include at least five minutes for warm-up and cool-down.
- The health maintenance zone offers low intensity, suitable for beginners.
- The aerobic exercise zone increases strength and endurance, burning more calories.
- The anaerobic exercise zone builds speed, power, and muscle, but is for shorter durations.
- Measure your pulse after training and again after three minutes. If it doesn't return to resting rate, you may have trained too hard.
- Consult your doctor before starting any vigorous training program.
