GE Serial Number Lookup: Appliances, Zoneline & Water Heaters
Find GE serial-number dates and model labels for kitchen and laundry appliances, room air conditioners, Zoneline units and separately confirmed water-heater families.
Confirmed GE household-appliance and documented Zoneline numbering families, plus explicitly selected older GE / Rheem water-heater systems. Other HVAC and newer water-heater families require separate evidence.

GE / General Electric serial numbers by device type
Match the product, manufacturer and documented serial layout before interpreting a date. The model is a separate label field; a date code alone does not identify capacity, installation date or warranty entitlement.
GE / General Electric water heaters
Selected historic Rheem-built GE standard water heaters use their own month/year or plant/week/year formats. GE separates support for pre-January-2017 tanks, July-2019-and-later tanks, 2012–2016 GeoSpring units and June-2025-and-later GE Profile GEOSPRING units. The historic chart does not establish the code for all newer tanks, heat-pump water heaters or GE electronics.
Find the label: GE identifies the side of a standard tank, on the right or left, as a possible model/serial label location.
Supported North American GE appliance serials use leading month/year letters and repeating year codes. Historic variants remain separately identified. These letters cannot be applied to a water heater merely because its jacket says GE. Copy the separate model field for the correct refrigerator, washer, dryer, dishwasher, range or other appliance manual.
GE’s locator covers portable, window/built-in and horizontal Zoneline room units separately. Vertical AZ75, AZ85, AZ90/91 and AZ95 units have their own chassis/tag locations in the identification guides below. Keep the complete unit model and serial. Other GE ducted, ductless, RV or component systems are not established by this room-unit locator.
Find the label: Horizontal Zoneline room units: behind the front cover near the lower/front edge. GE instructs users to disconnect power before removing the cover. Use the distinct AZ-series chassis guide for a vertical unit.
Older side-by-side, top-mount and Monitor-Top refrigerators and older ranges/cooktops have design-specific label locations. Monitor-Top cabinets and refrigerating units have separate identifiers. A location era is context for finding a label, not proof of the date on a particular unit.
The serial-only check retains every supported year. The source-context check also enters the photographed model and the decade identified by the source. Those are separate clues: neither the model nor the source’s chosen year is uniquely encoded in these serials.

The date above comes from the source’s caption. Camera timestamps, country labels and case references are not manufacture-date or factory codes.
Choose the exact product type. GE’s 31-category locator covers cooking, refrigeration, cleaning, laundry, water and room-air equipment; additional historical guides cover older refrigerators and cooking products. The model and serial are separate fields, and water-heater systems require their own family confirmation.

Front frame behind the oven door. For front-control models, inside the frame below the controls. On some gas models, the lift-up metal flag behind the middle of the rear control panel. For electric coil models, below the left-front surface unit. Below a lift-up cooktop, centrally or toward the right. Left leg behind the drawer or kick panel. Front frame within the drawer opening.
Format / what to enter
Copy the complete serial separately from the model, including letters and leading zeros.
Read the MODEL NO. and SERIAL NO. fields on the equipment label. The warning-label identifier 317b6641p001 is not a range model number. Printed examples such as JGB700SEJSS identify the model field; the artwork serial BD123456A is illustrative and does not identify a model or prove an exact year.
Below the rear-left or front-right electric surface unit. Rear-right underside of the cooktop. Below a rear or front-right control knob. Bottom of the cooktop.

Americana is used here as GE’s historical Hi-Lo range description. Confirm the actual manufacturer and label; the name alone does not establish a serial format.
Possible positions include the oven-opening frame, beneath the front-left electric burner, beneath a lift-up gas cooktop, or on the frame/leg around the storage-drawer opening. Position depends on the actual range design.

GE’s legacy 1961–1968 two-letter year entries are offered only as an explicitly selected historic interpretation.
The primary chart has overlapping 1972/1973 letter entries, which are retained rather than silently corrected.
GE household appliances, water heaters and HVAC use different numbering systems. Water-heater options require explicit family confirmation; other GE HVAC and heat-pump systems are not automatically decoded.
Enter the separate model number from the rating plate to search for the correct manual. These date positions do not establish a full model, capacity, fuel type or warranty entitlement.
The historical inspection chart is secondary evidence of listed brand relationships, not proof of the manufacturer, product family or date system on a particular unit. Confirm the actual label and select the matching system explicitly.
A missing match does not establish age, authenticity or condition. Unsupported eras and device types require the manufacturer or model-specific documentation.
Two-letter date prefixes such as GA are shared by many units. Select the dedicated prefix option explicitly; a prefix does not replace the complete serial or model.
A separately entered, exactly verified model can provide production-window context. It does not turn the serial into a model or guarantee the manufacture date of every engineering revision.

North American GE month/year letters; historical dates retained
Confirmed North American GE / GE Profile appliances, GE-built Americana / US Hotpoint, and documented Zoneline AZ75, AZ85, AZ90/91 and AZ95 layouts. Other GE HVAC and water-heater systems need separate rules.
Year codes repeat. All documented candidate years are shown; the newest year is not selected automatically. GE chart inconsistently lists 1972 under both N and R, 1973 under both P and S; both entries are retained as printed in the source chart. No factory/model inference from first two letters. Manufacturer Zoneline examples illustrate this same month/year layout. A single year printed beside an example supplies independent example context; it does not erase other literal year cycles.
GE legacy 1961–1968 chart: month plus two-letter year code (confirm system)
Legacy North American GE appliances.
The two-character year values come directly from GE’s chart. This interpretation is deliberately opt-in; serial placement is inferred from first-character-month convention plus the two-letter year entries.
The GE chart lists two-letter year codes but does not give a complete serial specimen. Select only after confirming a legacy GE plate/system.
Confirmed water-heater family: Water heaters: month and year before plant-line code
Water heaters only after confirmation of this manufacturer, product family, date-code layout and documented era.
Old water-heater suffix MMYY plant-line + five sequence digits. Manufacturer example 1209 D 01234 = December 2009. Optional brand prefix is not part of the 10-character date format. Modern plants changed individually from 2012; do not assume old-style serial ceased at every plant that year. The supplied historical inspection chart lists additional names, but that relationship does not prove the manufacturer of every product bearing the same brand. This option requires independent confirmation from the unit label or model-specific documentation.
Confirm that this is a water heater and that its rating plate or model-specific manufacturer documentation uses this exact numbering family. A historical brand list or a matching serial shape alone is insufficient.
Confirmed water-heater family: Water heaters: plant, production week and year
Water heaters only after confirmation of this manufacturer, product family, date-code layout and documented era.
TSB 1207 starts Mexicali April 2, 2012 and Nuevo Laredo June 4, 2012; plants migrate individually. PWWYY 00001 plus optional conversion-letter suffix. Plant identifies a city/country/organization only, never an exact street. Brand/fuel prefix can precede P.
Historical Rheem-family supplied-chart numeric MMYY system
Only the supplied 2010 Rheem-family water-heater chart; not generic GE/Intertherm HVAC or other products.
Secondary evidence illustrates 0794******as July 1994. Existing manufacturer-corroborated MMYY/letter/sequence water-heater rules remain unchanged. Current Rheem official pages support MMYY meanings on a different 10-character example 1209 D 01234; that does not independently prove every numeric-only historic suffix.
Select only after confirming the water heater or boiler family and numbering system described here. Brand ownership alone does not establish this system.
GE/Rheem GELN legacy water-heater MMYY example family
Only the exact GELN...Z... prefix/suffix pattern visually shown in the manufacturer GE returns guide; reviewed 2000–August 2012 subset.
The worked serial is GELN 1208 Z 13090=December 2008. Initial OCR/transcriptions omitted Z and misread N as M. This rule does not strip arbitrary GEprefixes, assert other eras never existed, or infer plant/model from GELN/Z. GE’s later appliance/HVAC/heat-pump systems differ.
Select only after confirming the water heater or boiler family and numbering system described here. Brand ownership alone does not establish this system.
GE/Rheem GEM later water-heater WWYY example family
The exact GEM+WWYY+five-digit form; conservative 2013–2016 reviewed full-year window for legacy GE/Rheem tanks.
The manufacturer says weekly codes after August 2012 and illustrates GEM 081305281 as February 2013 (week 08). Do not convert the week to an exact date or assume allweek 08 units lie in one month. Transitional 2012 week boundary is not established; January 2017 and newer GE systems require their own manufacturer guidance.
Select only after confirming the water heater or boiler family and numbering system described here. Brand ownership alone does not establish this system.
GE two-letter date prefix only (confirm system)
Only the explicitly selected, confirmed GE appliance date-prefix system. This is not a complete serial lookup.
The manufacturer uses two-letter examples such as GA to explain repeating manufacture dates. Preserve all literal chart years; a two-letter prefix is shared by many units and cannot establish a unique product, full model, factory or warranty.
Choose this option only when entering the two leading date letters from a confirmed GE appliance label. These letters are a partial date prefix, not the unique serial or a model identifier.

GE lookup questions
Why does the year code match more than one year?
Some systems reuse letters or only encode the last one or two year digits. Every supported interpretation is retained. A decade supplied from reliable records can narrow the reading; the tool does not automatically pick the newest year.
Does the serial identify my exact model?
Usually the model is a separate plate field. Where published serial ranges actually identify a model, the result shows model candidates and links to their manuals. Overlapping ranges remain ambiguous.
Can I share the result?
After a lookup, the address includes the serial in a fragment beginning with #serial=. Use “Copy share link” to share the serial and selected context. Opening the link runs the same lookup. The fragment is not a query-string result page.
