Door Preparation
Refer to the Kwikset drilling instructions template available at https://images.kwikset.com/is/content/BDHHI/drilling-instructions_knob for precise hole marking.
Steps for Door Preparation:
- Mark Holes on Door: Use the template, ensuring it's placed on the exterior side of the door. Fold the template along the fold line and align it with the door edge. Position the centerline approximately 38 inches (97 cm) from the floor.
- Mark Face Hole: Select the desired backset (2-3/8 in or 2-3/4 in) before marking the hole on the door face. Maintain consistent backset if drilling double doors or if another hole exists.
- Mark Edge Hole: Select the door thickness (1-3/8 in to 2-1/4 in) before marking the hole on the door edge. A service kit is available for 2-1/4 in thick doors.
- Drill Holes in Door:
- Drill a 2-1/8 inch (54 mm) hole through the door face (2 inches / 51 mm deep).
- Drill a 1 inch (25 mm) hole on the door edge (2 inches / 51 mm deep).
- To prevent splintering, drill from one side until the drill point just breaks through, then complete the hole from the other side.
Latch Installation
Step 1: Adjust Latch Backset (if needed)
- Hold the latch in front of the door hole, ensuring the latch face is flush against the door edge.
- Check Alignment: If the latch holes are centered in the door hole, no adjustment is needed. Proceed to Step 2.
- Adjust Latch (if not centered): Move the pin to extend the latch.
Step 2: Install Latch
- Ensure the slant of the latch bolt faces the door frame.
- For Rectangular Faceplate: Install the latch with the rectangular faceplate. If the latch is not pre-assembled with the desired faceplate, assemble it as shown. If the desired faceplate is not supplied, contact Consumer Support.
- For Drive-in Collar: Remove the faceplate and install the drive-in collar. Use a hammer and wood block to tap the latch in without damaging it.
Lever Installation
Step 3: Install Levers (Concealed Screws)
Option 1: Install Privacy/Passage Levers
- Push the bolt to install the exterior lever. Ensure the lever handle faces away from the latch.
- Important Note: If installing a passage lock on an entry door, the lever without screw holes should be on the exterior side.
- Privacy Locks Only: Ensure the pre-installed lever adapter is on the chassis. The hole must be on the side for privacy levers. Keep the turn button horizontal.
- Insert the interior lever and secure with screws.
Option 2: Install Entry Levers
- Install the exterior lever, then the interior lever, securing with screws. Note that the locking function may differ per lock/lever.
Option 3: Install Dummy (Non-Rotating) Levers
- Install the lever and secure it.
Step 3: Install Levers (Exposed Screws)
Follow the diagrams provided for installing levers with exposed screws, noting specific instructions for privacy locks and ensuring correct lever placement for entry doors.
Strike Installation
Step 4: Install Strike to Door Frame
- Prepare Door Frame for Strike: Locate the center of the strike hole by measuring back from the door stop (1/2 door thickness). Keep the strike level and trace its outline. Mark the screw holes.
- Drill Holes: Drill pilot holes (3/32 inch or 2 mm) for the strike screws, approximately 1 inch (25 mm) deep. If chiseling is required, ensure a depth of 5/8 inch (16 mm).
- Install Strike: Secure the strike plate to the door frame using the provided screws.
Test Latch Operation: Close the door and test the latch operation. Adjust the strike if the small bolt of the latch does not enter the strike hole correctly. If the latch is loose, adjust the strike tab to grip the latch bolt better when the door is closed.
