Kwikset Lever Installation Guide
Introduction
This guide provides comprehensive instructions for the proper installation of Kwikset door levers. Following these steps ensures your lever is securely fitted and functions correctly.
Tools and Materials Required
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Optional: Drill, 1/8" drill bit
Installation Steps
Step 1: Prepare the Door
Ensure the door edge has a pre-drilled hole (bore) for the latch and a smaller hole (cross bore) for the lever mechanism. If not, follow door preparation guidelines before proceeding. Check the door thickness to ensure compatibility with the lever set.
Step 2: Install the Latch
Insert the latch mechanism into the edge bore of the door. The bevel on the latch bolt should face the direction the door will close. Secure the latch with the two provided screws. A diagram shows the latch bolt mechanism being inserted into the pre-drilled hole on the edge of the door. Ensure the bevel of the latch bolt faces the direction of closing.
Step 3: Mount the Exterior Lever
Insert the spindle of the exterior lever through the latch mechanism. Ensure the spindle passes through the designated slot in the latch bolt.

Step 4: Mount the Interior Lever
Align the interior lever with the spindle and mounting posts of the exterior lever. Ensure it sits flush against the door.
Step 5: Secure the Levers
Fasten the interior and exterior lever components together using the provided screws. These screws typically pass through the interior lever's rose and thread into the exterior lever's mounting posts. Tighten screws securely but avoid overtightening.

Step 6: Install the Strike Plate
Position the strike plate on the door frame, aligning it with the latch bolt. Secure the strike plate with the provided screws. Ensure the strike plate is properly seated in the door jamb.
The strike plate is shown being screwed into the door jamb, aligned with the latch bolt.
Step 7: Testing and Adjustment
Test the lever operation by turning both the interior and exterior levers. The latch bolt should retract smoothly and extend fully. Check that the door opens and closes without binding.
A hand is shown operating the lever, demonstrating smooth retraction and extension of the latch bolt. If the latch does not fully retract or extend, or if the lever feels stiff, refer to latch adjustment procedures.
Latch Adjustment
If the latch bolt does not fully engage with the strike plate or retracts with difficulty, minor adjustments may be needed. Some Kwikset latches feature an adjustable mechanism that can be rotated or repositioned to alter the latch's throw. Consult specific model instructions if available for detailed adjustment steps.
