Step 1: Prepare Door and Check Dimensions
Ensure your door's dimensions are compatible with the lock. Check the backset (distance from door edge to center of hole), door thickness, and hole diameter.
Backset: 2-3/8" (60 mm) or 2-3/4" (70 mm)
Door Thickness: 1-3/8" - 1-3/4" (35 mm - 44 mm) (Passage levers may require a service kit for 2-1/4" (57 mm) thick doors).
If drilling a new door, use the provided template and follow complete door drilling instructions available at www.kwikset.com/doorprep.
Step 2: Adjust Latch Backset (If Needed)
Place the latch in front of the door hole with the face flush against the door edge.
If latch holes are centered: No adjustment needed. Proceed to Step 3.
If latch holes are NOT centered: Adjust the latch.
Latch Adjustment: Move the pin to extend the latch. Ensure the slant of the latch bolt faces the door frame.
- For chiseled door edge: Install latch with the slant facing the door frame.
- For non-chiseled door edge: Install latch with the slant facing the door frame.
Remove the mounting plates before proceeding.
Step 3: Install Latch
Insert the latch into the edge of the door. Ensure the latch bolt is oriented correctly (slant facing the door frame).
If using a drive-in collar, install it now.
Step 4: Remove Interior Lever
Loosen the pre-installed set screw on the interior lever using the Allen wrench (turn counter-clockwise). Do not remove the set screw completely. Slide the lever off.
Step 5: Install Levers
A. Install Exterior Lever: Press the latch bolt to install the exterior lever onto the door.
B. Install Interior Lever Base: Align the round edges of the interior lever base with the door.
C. Secure Interior Lever: Insert screws through the interior lever base and into the exterior lever mechanism. Tighten the screws. Tip: Pull the lever slightly away from the door to help align the screws.
D. Install Interior Lever: Place the interior lever onto the mechanism and tighten the pre-installed set screw (turn clockwise).
E. Check Alignment: If the lever base does not sit flush, rotate the turnbutton to align it properly.
F. Verify Orientation: Check the lever orientation chart. If your levers are oriented incorrectly, remove both levers and install them on the opposite sides of the door.
Important Note: For passage locks on entry doors, ensure the lever with screw holes is on the interior side.
Step 6: Install Strike on Door Frame
Attach the strike plate to the door frame using the provided screws.
Test Operation: Close the door and test the latch. If the latch is loose, adjust the strike tab to ensure a snug fit when the door is closed.
Privacy Locks Only
Save the included emergency unlock tool for future use in case of emergencies in bedrooms or bathrooms.
